In Vedic astrology, the planet Saturn is called Shanaiswara. The name Shanaiswara means "slow mover." Shanaiswara, or Shani, is the son of Surya Dev and his shadow wife Chaya and is the slowest of the Grahas. Saturn takes 2 1/2 years in each Rasi, completing one cycle every 30 years.
Shanidev plays the role of a judge in human lives. Shani, in Hinduism, keeps an eye on our deeds; depending on our karmas he will reward or punish us. Shani is the most feared of all deities because of his power to turn a king into a pauper within a moment. King Vikramaditya is one such person who had to suffer the wrath of Shani Dev.
Shani is the most powerful in the seventh house. Saturn rules over the two sidereal signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Shani exalts in Libra and falls in the sign of Aries. Saturn is a particularly beneficial planet for Taurus and Libra ascendants.
A malefic Shani could mean diseases like arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, or gout. Saturn affects one adversely when he occupies certain positions in one's horoscope like the Saade Sati (7 1/2 years) or Ashtama Shanaiswara (Saturn in 8th house—2 1/2 years).
Shani Puja and Grah Shanti Shani Pooja are some remedies done to appease the planet Saturn and reduce the hardships one will have to face during such bad times. Apart from that, there are a number of remedial measures one can follow including chanting Shani Mantras. The Shani Mantra has to be chanted facing the west a minimum of seven times per day. One can chant the mantra 108 times using a rudraksha rosary and by keeping a Shani yantra for better results.

Given below are some of the Mantras of Shani one can chant to please Shani and reduce the malefic effects.
"Om Hlim Sham Shanaye Namah"
"Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanayishraya Namah"
"Om Sham Shanayscharaya Namaha"
"Aum Aing Hring Shring Shung Shanaishcharaye Namah Aum"

Om Sanaischaraya vidhmahe
Sooryaputraya dhimahi
Tanno manda prachodayat
Shani Dhyan Mantra
Nilanjana samabhasam raviputram yamagrajam
Chaya martanda sambhutam tam namami shaishcharam
Meaning: I bow to Lord Shani, who is black in colour, and son of Sun and born to Chaya and brother of Yama, who moves very slowly.
Saneeswaran is reputed to be both a giver and destroyer. Anyone who sincerely prays to Shani Dev will not only be freed from troubles but also get the life that one desires.
Some Remedies to Reduce the Malefic Effects of Shani
- Observe fasts on 51 Saturdays and take khichdi made of rice and black urad daal after sunset.
- Wear a blue sapphire.
- Wear a 14-mukhi rudraksha bead, or a seven-mukhi rudraksha bead, or a Saturn Mala comprising 36 seven-mukhi beads and one 14-mukhi rudraksha bead.
- Worship Lord Hanuman by chanting his mantras on Saturday and lighting a ghee lamp in front of the idol.
- Donate sesame seeds on Saturday.
- Wear a Shani Yantra pendant.
- Wear a Shani ring (available at Shani Shinganapur).
- Pray to Lord Shiva and chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.

Never hurt anybody,if you start thanking the things around you like Pancha buthas,Navagrahas,Ashta dikpalakas,Parents, Living things, non living things, and several Gods, which gives u life without any reason. Any saturday...see, the point is, in most of the holy books God himself/herself have mentioned that true love/dedication/bhakti is beyond everything. In today's fast-paced world you can't spend much regular time chanting mantras/slokas, etc, etc. You really have to do one thing, purify your heart and mind by yourself. What is the use of praying regularly and then do sinful acts. (+1) + (-1) = 0...right?

I am pretty much brought up in US and life has been very challenging, so recently I have been more spirtual and trying to understand what is causing so many problems in my life. I consulted an astrologer and found out I had Shani Graha, so I have been observing the fast on saturday, as well as trying to do the mantra but it is very hard for me to pronounce and have been struggling to do the mantra. Also, recently I read that if you mispronounce the mantra it isn't good either. My mom was saying she can do the mantra in my place is that correct? Are parents allowed to do the mantra in a child's place? Also, is mispronouncing the mantra very bad and going to have the opposite effect, please advise.

Pretty Decent Article. You should have refrained from Advising 'Blue Sapphire' and mentioned that Astrology Gemstones have to be 'unheated and untreated' If someone has an afflicted Saturn and is running its 8th Transit from The Ascendant or Moon, wearing a Blue Sapphire could be disastrous.
