Eye Massager Benefits for Headache and Eye Strain

There are many of us who use a computer screen for long periods of time and suffer tired eyes and eyestrain symptoms as a result. Many of us also suffer from the pain of migraine headaches which even prescription medication cannot completely alleviate.

While manual eye massage can be hugely beneficial, I have found it helpful if I have someone to do it for me, but not as relaxing doing it for my own eyes. In contrast, I have found the Breo iSee Eye Massager really helpful as I can just sit back, relax and let it work its magic on tired, watering eyes and the headache that often accompanies these symptoms.

If you are familiar with that weary, prickly feeling in your eyes, with watering, irritation and sometimes, bleary or blurred vision, I can highly recommend a read through the information below and checking out the benefits of eye massage for yourself.

If you have symptoms of eye strain or migraine, find out how an eye massager could benefit you!

If you have symptoms of eye strain or migraine, find out how an eye massager could benefit you!

Today, I am going to talk about eye massage as a way to relieve all these symptoms and, how I discovered that although there is much helpful information about self-massage for eyes, I found it rather tedious to try to perform this to relieve my own symptoms. I was also worried about the possibility of damaging the fragile and delicate skin of the eye area, perhaps causing more lines and wrinkles to develop.

I am glad to say, that a clever device called the Breo I See 360 Eye Massager was the answer to my problems and I managed to get it from Amazon at a great price (use the link to visit the product page if you would like more details right now). I will tell you more about this great gadget later!

This model is one of a range from Breo and I have provided a comparison chart below so that if you were thinking of buying one for yourself or as a gift, you would know the benefits and functions of each.

How Can Eye Massage Help?

If you can use simple massage techniques on other tired muscles such as in the back, neck and shoulders, it stands to reason that tired eye muscles can also be helped in this way.

  • By using a fingertip from each hand on each of your upper eyelids, massage each eyelid against the brow bone for just a few seconds.
  • Repeat the action with each of your lower lids against the orbital bone that you can feel beneath your eyes.
  • If you are concerned about pulling or stretching the skin of this delicate area, you can also perform this technique through a warm, well wrung out washcloth or even a warm towel.

This technique not only helps to relax the tired muscles but may relieve the uncomfortable feelings associated with eye strain by stimulating the tear glands.

What can a Breo iSee Massager Do?

You can pop it on in the office or at home - in fact, because it is battery, not mains-powered, you can use it just about anywhere! You have the option of battery alone or plugging it into the mains with the ac adaptor.

Use it during a break whenever you experience the familiar symptoms of strain or the beginnings of a migraine. It has three different massage choices and each of these has individual settings. It also incorporates a music player so you can enjoy relaxing music to enhance your massage.

Why I Chose the Breo iSee 360

I love my iSee 360 because it has the full range of features. It uses air pressure, hot compresses and vibrations to gently relax the ocular region. You can give your mind a great relaxation session at the same time and mentally 'switch off' whilst listening to soothing music or one of the nature sounds provided through the earphones.

If you are concerned that you might get so relaxed that you fall asleep with the massager still in operation, you can preset the timer as well as the function. It is easy to select the exact type of massage and sounds that you want with the hand controller and clear, easy to read LED screen.

It is easy to adjust this device to a perfect fit with the adjustable buckles so one size definitely does fit just about anyone.

The Default settings are:

  • Air Pressure plus hot compress
  • Vibration plus hot compress
  • Air pressure plus vibration

These three modes circulate with a five minute duration and relaxing music throughout.

  • You can change the settings manually to provide just about any combination you wish.
  • Select the strength of the vibrations you want - these can be varied from gentle circular motions to left and right alternating vibrations from gentle, up to a level which to be honest, is too strong for me!
  • Select the air pressure mode you want. Choose from modes 1 - 4 or 'loop'.

Cleaning and Some Precautions for your Eye Massager

There is a manual provided with the iSee 360 that specifies:

  • Children under seven should not use the massager, nor should anyone suffering from any form or brain or eye disease or any physical or mental disorder.
  • You should never use the massager with contact lenses in and of course, you must take off any eyeglasses you normally wear before putting the massager on.
  • When you need to clean your Breo product you just need to wipe it with cotton wool and alcohol. The unit should not be washed with, or immersed in water.
  • Of course, it is important that if you have any concerns about your eye health or whether a massager like this should be used to help your eye strain or migraine symptoms, you should consult your Doctor or healthcare professional.

The iSee 360 was the model I chose - which one will be right for you? Use the feature comparison table above to decide.

Do You Suffer From Tired Eyes and Eye Strain?

Summary of Eye Massager Benefits

As you can see from the poll above, while eye drops are a 'first aid' choice for tired eyes, and both eye masks and eye exercises are used by some, eye massagers are also a popular choice.

I think that the main benefits for me are that I can sit and relax while wearing mine, listen to some relaxing music or a meditation CD and let the massager work on relieving my tired eyes. This is especially soothing if I also have a headache.

Eye massage using fingertips costs nothing though and can be learned quickly. If you have a friend willing to massage your eyes for you, this could also be hugely relaxing however, nothing is going to part me from my Breo eye massager and I would definitely replace it in the future if necessary!

Thanks Audrey, sorry for the delay in replying to your comment, we have been away on holiday for a week (lovely!). Thank you for the pin and share and I hope you found the information helpful. Alison

Hi Alison - Thank you so much for sharing this article. I take two different kinds of drops, and the eye massager sounds very interesting. You have done good research, so the article is very accurate. I will definitely look into this tomorrow. I enjoy reading your hubs and will pin and share this one. Blessings. Audrey

thanks @RTalloni - and for the pin-it! Kawi, thank you - the skin around the eyes is so delicate and fragile and unfortunately, what most of us want to do when our eyes are feeling tired is to rub them - which is not good in the long term! The Breo is great!

Kawika Chann from Northwest, Hawaii, Anykine place on July 02, 2013:

Awesome write study-buddy! I'm with you on the avoiding rubbing or manipulating the very fragile skin around the eyes - but this massager is all news to me. That looks fantastic! Up/useful. Peace. Kawi.

…board. Thanks! (Sorry to leave and add 0n note, but something strange happened when I needed to edit my comment. The system opened my comment but with iguidenetwork's name and would not let me edit.)

RTalloni on July 02, 2013:

An interesting to topic to learn more about. Thanks for an informative and nicely done hub on the benefits of eye massage. The Breo iSee is a neat product that seems like it could be a huge help. Pinning to my Solve It: Health and Safety

That's really nice. It's from you that I read about the eye massager for the first time, I plan to get one. Thank you! Up and shared. :)

Jessica Peri from United States on July 01, 2013:

This is really interesting! I know sometimes my eyes get tired from the computer, and if I am wearing my contacts for too long. I never knew that eye massagers even existed. Voted up and shared!

If you click on the first video and watch it. When it ends, on the right side it has other related videos. I looked at the one on massaging the liver, which was quite interesting as well.

Interestingly enough, i just went back and watched the video again and each time it has different related videos to watch on the right side of the screen. I just happened to get the one on the liver. This was the one about massaging the liver:

These videos are from a series done by Brandon Gilbert on youtube.

Alison Graham (author) from UK on July 01, 2013:

thanks @d.william - glad you found the information useful, but I am puzzled - where did you find the information about massaging your liver - the two videos I provide in the article only cover eye massage? Thanks for reading and commenting.

d.william from Somewhere in the south on July 01, 2013:

voted up, awesome, and interesting.

what a great article. I am ashamed to say after practicing nursing for 35+ years i have learned something new from you. The videos were very helpful, and including the additional one on massaging your liver.

I do spend a lot of time on this PC and will certainly give all the suggestions a try as soon as i get off this site. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us.
