The link above was created for the 2014 Scarecrow Contest. That page will give the rules, the application form and will be the place to vote for your favorites.

The Pendleton's Fall Harvest Festival visitors were welcomed last year to town with scarecrows greeting them along the entrances and mounted on lamp posts around the town square. Every Contest Entry creation had a sign with the name of the scarecrow and creator/sponsoring group. With this information, everyone was allowed to vote for the "People's Choice" award for their favorite scarecrow in four categories - business, group, individual, children. Winners received $25, a blue ribbon and bragging rights. Voting begins online the Wednesday before the festival and continues until 8 am on the morning of the festival, Saturday, October 18, 2014. Voting will be at the Information Booth during the festival. The festival begins at 10 am on the Village Green in Pendleton and the winners were announced at 5 pm.. We no longer recognize Honorable Mention but did the first year.

Thank you to Jo and Pete McConnell, organizers of the Scarecrow Contest and thank you to all those who participated. Please continue to scroll to see who the winners and honorable mentions are. Also, thank you to all the Fall Festival Committee Members and to all those who were recruited to help or donate items. This has proven to be a great event for our town. It is such fun to see so many smiling faces enjoying these wonderful scarecrows. Our Scarecrows are "spreading joy" through Pendleton and beyond. There are many more scarecrows around town besides the ones that were in the contest.

"I can't believe how much fun we've had in Pendleton with the scarecrows. Everyone's enthusiasm and hard work has been overwhelming. Please take a drive through town and you'll be amazed, too. With all the talk, I suspect next year will be even better!!! Thanks everyone!!!!" Jo McConnell 2012

I enjoyed creating this slideshow showing off our scarecrows in 2012 and really appreciate the help of T.J. Land. I hope to be able to create one this year and will do my best to make sure that happens.

Jo and Pete McConnell - Pendleton Scarecrow Contest

Thank You Jo and Pete!

When the Pendleton Leadership Foundation's Fall Harvest Festival Committee met in the spring to discuss the 2012 event, it was decided to discontinue the Bubba Bake Off and substitute with something different to enhance the event. The Fall Harvest Festival at one time had an Outhouse Race which was fun for awhile but there came a time to move on to something else and that is when the Bubba Bake Off began. The committee felt that it was once again time to move on to something new and exciting. Committee member Jo McConnell suggested a Scarecrow Contest. She had been to the Cornbread Festival held at her husband's hometown of South Pittsburg, Tennessee and was excited about their town's scarecrows. They had also seen some wonderful scarecrows while traveling throughout the state of Vermont. The committee was aware that other towns had Scarecrow Contests and Jo's excitement was very contagious as the committee agreed that they would give it a try. Jo met with Amber Barnes, Pendleton's Town Administrator, and came up with an entry form, rules, and suggestions for applicants. A notice was in the paper and personal contact was made with the businesses, schools, and organizations to promote this idea. Soon, everyone was talking about the Scarecrow Contest and making plans to create one of their own. The news of the Scarecrow Contest spread through Facebook, Churches, Emails, and Word of Mouth. It was not long until completed Entry Forms began showing up at Town Hall. Jo McConnell said "I would have been pleased if we had 20 entries the first year. I was shocked when we had over 50". Scarecrows had to be in place by 5 pm on October 9 and many were scurrying around at the last minute trying to get theirs completed on time. The results were absolutely breath taking. Pendleton is filled with an abundance of creative citizens and these scarecrows prove it. The Fall Harvest Festival Committee was extremely pleased with the festival and with these wonderful scarecrows that have added much to the community. Lou Robinson, event coordinator, said "It has been fun to watch families strolling around the square enjoying the Scarecrows, visiting our shops and dining in Pendleton".

Tony and Janiece - Y'all just need to come visit us in Pendleton!

JanieceTobey on September 17, 2014:

Now I'm in the mood to make a scarecrow! Also, I agree with Tony. You've really put Pendleton on the map with all your wonderful articles about it! Sometime I'll have to come visit Pendleton!

Tony Payne from Southampton, UK on September 15, 2014:

This looks like a real fun event. Pendleton must love you :) I wonder how many additional visitors you get because you helped to put them on the map?

Kathryn Grace from San Francisco on September 11, 2014:

What a wonderful community event! So many fun ideas. I especially liked the Wizard of Oz tableau.

Perrin from South Carolina on September 11, 2014:

This looks fun and similar to one we have in Summerville called Scarecrows on the Square!

Jim from Kansas on September 06, 2014:

What a great idea for a contest. Almost makes me want to make one.

debW07 on September 04, 2014:

A Scarecrow Contest is so fun for the folks making them and for the people, like me, who get to look at all of them. The best thing is it's almost that time of the year again! Your photos are fantastic! Great job, OhMe!!

Nancy Tate Hellams (author) from Pendleton, SC on September 20, 2013:

@anonymous: I am really getting excited, too, and can't wait to see the creativity emerge all over town.

anonymous on August 26, 2013:

The excitement is beginning to build with the applications going out this week. Can't wait to see all the wonderful creativity of our town people and businesses. Hope everyone will come to Pendleton for Fall Festival and the weeks to follow and see the true characters for Pendleton.

TommysPal on August 22, 2013:

What fun. I like that everyone gets involved. Awesome!

Nancy Carol Brown Hardin from Las Vegas, NV on August 22, 2013:

I used to have one I made who sat in a chair on my patio, wearing glasses and reading a newspaper. He was dressed in jeans with suspenders and a newsprint shirt. That was back when I still worked at the paper, so I thought it was pretty cool. His name was Charlie, and he's been gone for a few years now! Scarecrows are just plain fun!

lesdollin lm on April 05, 2013:

Great collection of scarecrow photos! Well done!

Great lens very well written.

Nancy Tate Hellams (author) from Pendleton, SC on October 23, 2012:

@Lee Hansen: Oh I would love to see your creation. My friend, Jo, who organized this event for us in Pendleton got inspired after visiting her son in Vermont. She said that they were everywhere. Maybe I will just have to go visit Vermont.

Lee Hansen from Vermont on October 23, 2012:

I do love harvest scarecrows so much. Looks like Pendleton's contest was lots of fun for the competitors and the visitors. In Brandon and South Burlington up here in Vermont there are similar festivals and scarecrow contests. I got inspired this year and created one of my own for the front yard.

Nancy Tate Hellams (author) from Pendleton, SC on October 19, 2012:

@anonymous: I know what you mean. It is hard to look at them without smiling. I love each and everyone of them. I am working on a slide show and can't wait to get it finished.

anonymous on October 19, 2012:

Ohme, this is my favorite lens. I smile every time I look at the scarecrows! Thank you for sharing them online!

Nancy Tate Hellams (author) from Pendleton, SC on October 19, 2012:

@anonymous: I keep seeing ones that I haven't seen before. They are everywhere!

Nancy Tate Hellams (author) from Pendleton, SC on October 19, 2012:

@anonymous: Aren't they wonderful. I just love seeing folks smiling and enjoying them and am so glad that Jo McConnell had this idea for our town. She had seen some in Vermont and Tennessee and then did a great job of organizing it here. Everyone has been so creative. They each have their own personality! Thanks so much for visiting this page and commenting.

anonymous on October 19, 2012:

I have thoroughly enjoyed these wholesome scarecrows without the scariness usually involved in this time of year. I hope we do this as an annual event.

Rosetta Slone from Under a coconut tree on October 18, 2012:

I need some of these for our farm. They are just gorgeous.

anonymous on October 17, 2012:

This has been so much fun! If you haven't been to Pendleton to see the scarecrows and can get here, you shouldn't miss them. So much creativity is just amazing!
