Two Great Wildlife Parks in Southern France

To me all life is precious; even garden pests, until they start munching too much veg. I find nothing is more wondrous than nature itself.

French Wildlife Parks Visited While on Holiday

Great For a Day Out If You Love Nature

The two main wildlife parks we visited on our French holiday, and featured in this article, along with videos I made, includes:-

  • Tropical Floral Park of the Court of Aron
  • Parc Ornithologique du Teich

We always make a point of visiting at least one of the many wildlife, bird, animal and nature parks in southern France when on holiday. This article is a holiday review of some of these Wildlife and Nature Parks with highlights of a few places we've visited over the years when holidaying in southern France.

One of the most beautiful parks in southern France is the Tropical Floral Park at Court of Aron in the Vendee Coast; this park is the first park featured in this article, including video and photos. Of all the parks I've been to this is the most stunning. Its sheer size is sure to guarantee that a leisurely meander around the paths, through the woodlands and past the numerous ponds with ducks, swans, and fish will occupy a full and fulfilling day out.

All photos in this article were taken by me while on holiday in southern France.

The Beauty and Tranquillity of the Tropical Floral Park of the Court of Aron

The Parc Floral et Tropical de la Court d'Aron, situated in the town of Saint-Cry-en-Talmondais, Vende, France is an exception park; and as the name suggests it has a very tropical theme and feel about it.

On entering the park you're welcomed by a quaking duck and the pleasant noise of a half bamboo water shoot rhythmically filling with water and then emptying into the pond every few seconds. From there you meander around the various paths through open gardens, wooded areas, ponds and various other river and water features at your leisure. On a fine summer's day, which is almost guaranteed in the Vendee, temperatures anything up to 35C (95F), it makes for a pleasant day out.

Parc Floral et Tropical

When on holiday in the Vendee Coast a few years ago one of our day trips was to Parc Floral et Tropical; and it was a most spectacular day trip. This park, dedicated to tropical flora and fauna attracts a lot of wildlife so not only did we have the delight and pleasure of meandering at a tranquil pace through the numerous public paths within the park but occasionally we would catch site of some of the most wonderful wildlife, including the dragonflies most attractive and colourful butterflies and dragonflies. Below is the short video I made of our leisurly walk through the Tropical Floral Park at the Court of Aron in the Vendee, France.

Meandering Through the Parc Floral et Tropical

Highly Recommended Holiday Destination

On our journey through the park we had the pleasure of seeing a wide range of butterflies feeding from the many flowers in bloom, bees and other insects including dragonflies as big as your finger. Rivers winding into the background for as far as you can see steppe with regular mini-waterfalls.

Plenty of wildlife to see in, on and around the numerous pongs including frogs, fish, ducks and black swans; one pond in particular had water plants with rather attractive seed pods the size of a large dinner plate demonstrating that big can be beautiful.

Farm Animals at Parc Floral et Tropical

The Park's Diversity

Near the end of our day out at Parc Floral et Tropical one of the last attractions was the ‘city farm’ in the park. This made for a perfect ending to a perfect day, being able to enter the farmyard and be in amongst the farm animals and, as this short video clip filmed by me while strolling around amongst the farm animals’ show, being in with all the animals being able to feed them and pet some of them, such as the goats, is quite an experience.

Farm Animals at Le Cheval Parc, Near Challans

The Horse Park

Le Cheval Parc, near Challans is a horse park where shows and entertainment is frequently put on for the public. Challans is a small city about an hour’s drive inland from the coast in the vendee. While at the Horse Park not far from Challans, before the show starts if you arrive early or once the show has ended there’s plenty of time to wander around the rest of the park and get close to all the farm animals, just as we did and as shown in this short video clip which I filmed while there.

Birds at le Lac du Parc Bordelais and Parc Ornithologique

Bordeaux Region

This video below was filmed by me while holidaying in the Bordeaux Region of southern France. It starts with ducks and swans on the pond in a public park in the centre of Bordeaux city itself; Birds at le lac du parc Bordelais. The rest of the video concentrates on birds and wildlife at parc ornithologique de Teich, Bassin D'Arcachon which is just over an hour's drive from Bordeaux. Bassin D'Arcachon being the coastal town where we rented a holiday flat for the week.

Parc Ornithologique du Teich (Ornithological Bird Park)

While on holiday at de Teich, Bassin D'Arcachon in the Bordeaux Region of France we took a day trip to the local bird park, Parc Ornithologique du Teich, a wildlife wetlands park for birds very similar to the bird wetlands wildlife park at Slimbridge, Gloucestershire back in England. And below is the full video I made while we meandered around this most gorgeous natural wildlife bird park.

Close up of Storks Nesting at Parc Ornithologique Du Teich

While visiting Parc Ornithologique du Teich and walking around the designated public footpaths we stopped at an advantage point to watch and photograph storks nesting in the trees, and with the zoom lens on my video camera was able to also video them close-up in their nests; as shown in this short video clip.

What Type of Holiday do you prefer - Sunny beaches, sightseeing

Arthur Russ (author) from England on June 14, 2017:

Thanks for all your feedback; when we're on holiday near the coast and the weather is good we do spend a lot of time on the beach, but we do also make a point of spending a day or two touring local wildlife parks and other places of natural beauty.

Felicitas on April 07, 2014:

After seeing all of your beautiful photographs, I sure would love to visit these places in person.

Felicitas on April 07, 2014:

I don't go on many holidays but sight seeing is definitely more intriguing to me than beaches.

cmadden on December 19, 2012:

A bit of sightseeing and a lot of the beach, I think.

What a treat to meander through the beauty of the Tropical Floral Park of the Court of Aron with you, you are a wonderful tour guide for this amazing place where you need to come early and stay late to take it in or make it a two day event. Hands down, I'd go to Kabetogama for any holiday possible, I grew up there and still call it God's country.
