Letchworth State Park New York

I like to take pictures and make videos of our family vacations and share them.

The Grand Canyon of the East

Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" Letchworth is a beautiful park that the Genesee river runs through. It has a deep river gorge with 3 beautiful waterfalls.

I would love to return in the fall to see the change in season. I'm not sure if I can handle the cold though, after living in Florida for so many years. I will have to think hard on that one.

To get to the lower falls and the footbridge it requires climbing down 127 stairs. Make sure you have the appropriate comfortable clothing and non-slip shoes because it can be dangerous.

The park can not really be described in words so I made a video of our hike to the lower falls, you can find it at the bottom of this page. I also added a links to the park website and the trail map.

Hiking to the Lower Falls

The first on our list was a hike to the lower falls. There are 127 stairs included on the the trail. It was tough to capture all of the stairs on the way down because they weave in and out of the trees. You can get a better idea of the walk by looking back up at the stairs.

There isn't much to see on the beginning of the hike. Just a lot of trees and steep drops. The lower you get the water starts to peek through the trees. It is a beautiful aqua color.

This is a very steep area. If you look past the trees it looks like it drops, however it is more of a gradual drop, but still dangerous.

The Hike Back

The hike to the falls wasn't so bad, but the hike back up was a whole other animal. Remember, the way down was all down hill so obviously the way back is uphill with 127 steps that we had to climb. We took breaks here and there. Then we were off to the middle falls.

The Middle Falls

This was a pretty decent size waterfall. The water was roaring.

The Upper Falls

After the middle falls, we went to the 3rd waterfall at the park. The upper falls is the prettiest of the three, I think anyway. It is horseshoe shaped with lots of mist. The river is really pretty on the way as well.

Our vacation upstate, New York was packed full of things to do. We visited several state parks, wineries and Darien Lake theme park. Letchworth was one of my favorites.

Great lens! And thank you for visiting our parks! My husband and I are on a mission to save our parks (see my lenses) ... getting the word out is exactly what we're trying to do! I gave you a squid-like and a g+1 ... :)
