About Honeymoon Island

The State Park is beautifully situated on the barrier island known as Honeymoon Island. The park is an astounding 385 acres of land with over 2,400 acres submerged in the Gulf of Mexico. 4 miles of pure white beach attracts many locals and vacationers alike.

Honeymoon and neighboring Caladesi Island were once part of a larger barrier island. In 1921, they were divided in half when a major hurricane came through the area. The water lying between the two islands is now known as Hurricane Pass.

Honeymoon Island was known as Hog Island until 1939, when a developer from New York built several bungalows for honeymooners. The name was changed to Honeymoon Isle to tempt vacationing newlyweds from all over the world.

Eventually all of the bungalows were torn down as the state park was being developed. In 1963, the Dunedin Causeway was built to connect the island and the city of Dunedin.

Wildlife is all around you, especially these floating pelicans. On more than one occasion, I have seen them and other birds "hanging" out and greeting swimmers.

If you are lucky, dolphins may even come out to play. Of course they keep quite a distance between you and them. I haven't been able to take any photos as they move much quicker than the floating friends above. It's nice to be able to catch a glimpse of their beauty.

Things To Do

While Visiting Honeymoon Island

Honeymoon Island is so much more than just a beach. After swimming and catching some rays, there are a number of fun activities to enjoy.

The beach has a designated area just for pet lovers. You can spend the day swimming and playing fetch with your pooch. The dog beach is located on the southern tip of the island. Upon leaving, there are hoses so you can wash the days adventure off of your dog.

Parents, you can take a break as the kids play on the playground on the northern end of the island. And it not just a small area, it's equipped swings, slides and things to climb on. Great for burning the energy off of the little ones!

Hiking

Take a 2 1/2 mile long hike along Osprey Trail to enjoy nature. The trail is beautiful and worth the hike. If you have younger children, you may want to bring a stroller along. This will prevent them and you from tiring out.

Bird Watching

You can find several different species of birds, including shorebirds. Many of the resident birds are threatened and endangered species. Ospreys also call the island home, their nests can be seen in the treetops. Having your camera ready is a must have for all of the nature lovers, you will not be disappointed!

Fishing

Fishing is allowed as long as you carry a fishing license, people have been known to catch flounder, snook, trout, snapper, sheepshead, spanish mackerel and tarpon. Bring your pole and see what you catch!

Hunt for Seashells

Finding the delicate seashells is one of my favorite things to do. The powerful current from the Gulf brings many varieties of shells ashore. I've even found a couple dozen shark teeth. Shelling is a very popular activity while visiting the park. Each end of the beach (and everywhere in between) offers many gorgeous shells waiting to be found.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Explore Pelican Cove with your kayak. If you don't have one (or forgot to bring yours), they are available to rent for very reasonable rates.

Restaurant

Relax on the deck of Cafe Honeymoon while enjoying the tropical views and friendly atmosphere. A few of the menu items include: fish, chicken, burgers, hot dogs and delicious fruit smoothies. There is menu section just for the kiddos as well. Alcohol is sold but must be kept within the cafe area.

The cafe also features a gift shop with souvenirs and many beach accessories. You can find anything from magnets and shot glasses to sunglasses, hats and t-shirts. An ATM is available and all major credit cards are accepted.

Picnic

It's always fun to have a picnic lunch with family. Tables and grills are available for use. No alcohol is permitted in these areas.

@milli-kett: It is one of my favorites places to visit, if you go during the week (instead of the weekend) it's very light on traffic. Also, if you enter near the dog park, there tends to less visitors :)
