Happy 4th of July!
A Salute to Our Heroes in Pendleton SC
Freedom Fest in Pendleton South Carolina was an old fashioned Patriotic community celebration that was fun for the whole family.
Unfortunately, Friends of the Park was not be able to organize this event for 2012,2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. If any group is interested in organizing this great event for 2017, please contact Pendleton Town Hall. It would be so wonderful if someone would take on this event. We sure miss it.
In 2011 we had Games For The Children with prizes, Great Food including watermelon wedges, Music by DJ Ty Buchanan, Bingo, Bake Sale with a Cake Walk, exhibit by the Palmetto Live Steamers Club, a Salute To Our Heroes and a wonderful performance by the Piney Grove Praise Dance Ministry and the best Fireworks Display anywhere around .Freedom Fest was a fundraiser for the park by Friends of the Park. We asked that folks come early and purchase food and participate in the many scheduled activities.
Over 100 volunteers worked very hard to make this a very special event! Thanks to our generous sponsors, our volunteers and our estimated 3,000 guests, Friends of the Park was thrilled that we made more this year than ever for the Step Up To The Plate Fundraising Campaign to renovate the ball fields and erect a Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park.
Bring your own chair but leave your pets at home! Pets, Coolers, Alcohol and Tobacco are prohibited inside the park gates. No food or drinks can be brought into the park. We have volunteers preparing and selling food and drink so this would be like bringing your own food to a restaurant.

Scenes From Freedom Fest 08
Who Organizes Freedom Fest?
Let me start by giving you a little background information about how Freedom Fest got started.Teri Sloan, Town of Pendleton Administrator, began this celebration in 1990 - the Town's Bicentennial. Budget strains unfortunately prevented the town from continuing this project after 2003. To keep this wonderful tradition alive, in 2004 Fred Hamilton and Rick Moore of Pendleton Home Builders and Pendleton Real Estate decided to take it on. They planned, organized and secured sponsorships from interested community members such as Ken Rowland of State Farm Insurance, Diane Watkins of The Palmetto Bank, Dr. Mark Stamey of Pendleton Dental Care.In 2008, Fred and Rick approached "Friends of the Park" and asked if we would be interested in taking this on as an annual fundraiser for the park. "Friends of the Park" agreed but only if the Town of Pendleton could sponsor the fireworks which was the biggest expense. We have been so pleased that the town has agreed for the last two years to be the sponsor of the fireworks. The money that they donate is given back to the town and more as everything made from the event goes back into Veterans Park.
All of the generous donors listed above continue to help sponsor the event today along with many more including Mann Promotions, Dr. Frank Forgnoni, AT&T, Design South, E-Z Clean, 1826 On The Green, Krause Moorhead Draisen, McConnell Family, Brewer Family, Kelly Family, Hellams, Kirkleys, Bank of America, American Legion Post 113, Mayor Burdette, Sherods, Lou Robinson, Wal-mart, Jim Vogel, The Islander, PEEPS and many more.
We also have Inkind Donations from Carolina Bottled Water, Coca-Cola, Pet Dairy, Electric City Printing, Norman Durham, Bi-Lo, Crenshaws, Liberty Halll Inn, Timeless Tours and Travel, CVS, Sam's Club, Frito Lay, The Print House, Palmetto Routers, Pendleton Flower Shop, Village Alterations, Publix, Central Textiles, Granny's Restaurant, Griffs, Main Street Designs, Tribbles, and many, many more. Prizes are donated for the Bingo With The Mayor and delicious cakes and cookies for the Bake Sale. Many groups are involved to help make this event possible. Besides the Town of Pendleton, we have the American Legion, Boy Scouts, PEEPS PreSchool and AfterSchool Programs, area Churches, the Pendleton Fire Department, Pendleton Elks Lodge, The Anderson County Sheriff's Department, Pendleton Recreation Association, EMS, Upstate Marines, and many many more organizations and individuals.
So you see that Pendleton is a community that pulls together and makes things happen for the betterment of our community.Would you like to help?

Fabulous promotion of your event! The photos are so embracing. As Sylvestermouse said, it makes me want to come to Pendleton just to be a part of such a awesome group of people who celebrate the sacrifices of our veterans, firefighters, EMS, etc. You are all to be commended for the extent to which you promote our country and this wonderful cause. Thumbs up, my friend!

Fantastic lens. Very colourful and serves as a great advert for the event. Hope you have a lot of fun.
Nancy Tate Hellams (author) from Pendleton, SC on May 24, 2010:
@Sylvestermouse: Actually, the Great American Turtle Hunt is organized by Barrett's family and is a precious activity where you learn about turtles while hunting for the answers to Turtle questions which are hidden in the playground. Everyone gets prizes which include a little rubber turtle. They are adding some more fun and exciting things to it this year. I can't wait to see what they have in store for the children who visit Barrett's Place!
Cynthia Sylvestermouse from United States on May 24, 2010:
I have often been tempted by your articles to just move to Pendleton. I have a brother who lives in SC and he loves it. The Freedom Fest sounds like sooooo much fun and I haven't played bingo since my grandmother used to take me to the Kiwanis bingo night when I was a little girl. I am definitely ready for watermelon and bingo! I do have one question, this turtle hunt, do they hunt for live turtles :) I added this lens to the plexo on my 4th of July lens.
Barbara Radisavljevic from Templeton, CA on May 18, 2010:

Hey, why don't you and your family come to Freedom Fest? You could camp at the KOA on Lake Hartwell. Think about it.
