Things to See and Do in Emporia, Kansas

Looking for a day trip in south central Kansas? It's time to check out Emporia in the scenic Flint Hills region. A drive through the rolling hills with Emporia as the destination makes a very pleasant outing. I'll share with you some sights to take in while in Emporia and a sampling of restaurants in this historic university town.

Last spring my sister and I took a road trip to Emporia and we loved touring the William Allen White home. Check out my photos of it below.

Sights of the Flint Hills - Scenes you might see on your way to Emporia

When I visit Kansas, I love a drive through the Flint Hills. Photos can never seem to capture the subtle beauty of the hills. The undulations, the small creeks cutting through the sea of grass.

One part that does come through in the photos is the big sky. It surrounds you in an intense blue that seems to go on forever. If you are lucky enough to see a thunderstorm building, the build-up of thunderheads is quite dramatic.

Visit the William Allen White House

This Pulitzer Prize winning editor hosted presidents and other notables in his Emporia home. The website below gives you a preview of the handsome house.

The site hosts special events called Sundays on the Porch with literary entertainment or an ice cream social. In October they have a Spirits in the Garden and Flashlight Tour.

Here's a photo that I took in 2011 of the exterior of the William Allen White house. I highly recommend visiting it.

The photos of that Emporia Theater both inside and out are great. Thanks for leaving a comment on my Peter Pan Park hub which is what led me here. The flint hills do certainly have a special beauty all their own!

@kashmir-ladakh lm: Wow--you go for contrasts in your traveling, don't you?! I lived all over India earlier in my life--especially enjoyed a couple of summers spent in Mussoorie in the foothills of the Himalayas when my husband taught courses at the National Academy there. Never made it to Kashmir though.
