Creating Your World Travel Bucket List
If you’re like me, you love to travel! If I had the resources I’d travel far more often than I do, but I know that I’ve been truly blessed to have had the opportunities that I have had so far. For me there is no shortage of amazing places to see and events to experience across the globe, so I have to be very selective about how I spend my travel dollar. Perhaps you’re even more fortunate and have the means to see the world a bit more freely. Either way, it helps to know what types of opportunities are out there when making your list of the top travel experiences you’d like to have.
The following are some of the incredible experiences that I have had or would like to have before I kick the proverbial bucket! I’d love to hear yours.
Mardi Gras in New Orleans
Want to enjoy a good, old-fashioned American celebration before lent begins? Enjoy crab cakes, Cajun food and drinks, listen to jazz and earn your beads on Bourbon Street? Then New Orleans is the place to be. Hotel rooms go fast, so book early. This is a smaller scale, but no less famous version of Rio’s Carnival. Revelers in costume dance in the streets, enjoy parades and enjoy good, clean fun! Come on down!
Bourbon Street, New Orleans
Carnival (Carnaval) in Rio de Janeiro – This over-the-top festival dates back to the early 1700s! This four day celebration predates the Lenten season, starting on a Saturday and ending on Fat Tuesday. Carnival features countless people, especially drag queens, in ornate, glittery costumes, lots of dancing, drinking and merry-making. Carnival is actually celebrated throughout Brazil, but no place does it better than Rio. The event features a lavish parade, samba music from traditional Brazilian bands and amazing food. Tickets are required for many of the events, so buy your early. During these four days, foreign tourists alone make up at least 500,000 visitors!
Carnaval, Rio de Janeiro
Oktoberfest in Munich – Held annually in late September to early October, this festival commemorates the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and his bride in 1810. The festival has grown into the largest festival in Germany and one of the most famous in the world, attracting people from all over the globe. Dance to polkas in one of the many beer tents and drink beer served by beer maidens from incomprehensibly large steins, play carnival games, shop for souvenirs, eat schnitzel and bratwurst, and enjoy watching the Bavarian people in their dirndls and lederhosen.
Another Great German Vacation
- Berlin Germany Vacations
Berlin is truly one of the most fascinating, breathtaking cities in the world. In this amazing city, old meets new in a clash of cultures and architectural styles that will leave you amazed and ready to explore!
East Side Gallery, Berlin
Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland – Come to the shores of Lake Geneva each July and enjoy the world’s most well-known jazz festival. Each year over 200,000 music lovers descend on Lake Geneva for this two week festival which is no longer simply for jazz aficionados. The festival has evolved to include virtually every genre of music, so there is something to be enjoyed by everyone in your travel party, though jazz remains a solid tradition. Past performers have included Carlos Santana, Chick Corea, Weather Report, Radiohead, Black Eyed Peas, Johnny Cash, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Earth, Wind and Fire, to name a few.
Montreux Jazz Festival
New Year’s Eve in Time’s Square – New York City is one of the most fabled and romantic cities on the globe and on New Year’s Eve, Time’s Square comes alive with countless revelers out to have a good time, watch the legendary ball drop, drink, dance and ring in the new year in good company. If you don’t mind crowds and want to be part of a one-of-a-kind New Year celebration, you’ve got to come out and join in!
NYE in Times Square
Viewing the Northern Lights on a trip to the Ice Hotel in Finland – This hotel is built from blocks of ice that have been excavated from the Torne River. It only stands from December through April of each year before it melts off and returns to the river. Check out the following link to learn more. Snowmobile tours are available for tourists and include hot drinks, story telling by locals about the mysterious lights and local legends, and cooking of sausages over open flames. It is a truly unique experience that is worth having, even though temperatures are not exactly tropical!

Finlands Ice Hotel Sometime back I saw a show on the Travel Channel about the Ice Hotel in Finland. If you are an adventure traveler that enjoys a unique travel experience and isnt necessarily...
Go to the Olympics – I love the Olympics, both summer and winter. I love that it comes only every four years. This makes it all the more enjoyable when it comes around again. Some of the greatest moments in sports history were made at the Olympics. Remember the Miracle on Ice USA Men’s Hockey Team from 1980? I recall watching that game on a small black and white tv in my bedroom and screaming like a crazy person when we won! Remember Michael Phelps’ incredible performance in the 2008 Olympics? Watching his relay team (with Jason Lezak) win to give Phelps his 8th gold medal was incredible! To experience that kind of energy in person would be indescribable.
Go to the Super Bowl – An American pastime that is not to be missed. Sure, it’s fun to host a big party with friends, family, chips, dip and beer, but that is secondary to the experience of actually being there! And if your team happens to be in the Super Bowl, this is one party that you simply cannot miss! I’m pulling for the Green and Gold all the way…Go Packers!!
Go to the World Cup – Arguably the largest sporting event in the world! Soccer is a world-wide phenomenon and even though it is not as popular in the US as it is in other countries, it is gaining in popularity here. I love soccer and it would be amazing to experience the revelry and pure joy that this incredible spectator sport brings. Every four years, like the Olympics, it is held in some of the world’s most interesting and dynamic places that would offer opportunities for amazing sightseeing and tourism between games.
Climbing Mount Everest – No. I’m not delusional, and I certainly don’t want to reach the summit. I’m not prepared for that and I’m too much of a princess to put up with such harsh conditions. But Mount Everest is a legend, and I’d love to travel to Nepal. There are tour companies that offer you the opportunity to join an expedition and climb to base camp. You can experience what life is like for those that are continuing on, meet the sherpas, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Then head back to the village to explore, hike, dine or sleep!
Experience an Abu Dhabi Safari – Where else can you sled the sand dunes, ride camels, camp in the desert and enjoy a traditional belly dance, all on the same vacation? Welcome to Abu Dhabi! This rich-man’s playground in the middle east is one of the safer destinations for western travelers. The dunes are breathtaking and this is a unique experience that few people are fortunate enough to have.
Abu Dhabi Safari
Kenyan Safari – Speaking of safaris, a visit to Kenya gives one the opportunity to see where safari travel all began. Kenya has it all, from cultural diversity, to unparalleled scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, pristine coastline and warm tropical waters. You can enjoy the safaris by land or indulge in a hot air balloon safari, taking in the breathtaking landscape from the sky!

Thanks so much. Hopefully you'll make it to Switzerland someday. I went many years ago to several cities, including Montreaux. It is amazing. But Alaska sounds incredible too. Have a wonderful time!

I would love to travel to Switzerland. We hopefully are going on a cruise to Alaska next year. Great hub.

Thanks so much! I was focusing on events more than places, but you are so right. New Zealand would be a great place to go. I'd also love to see Australia and spend some time in the outback. I have so many places on my list that even if I had the money, I'd probably not have enough time! Cheers.

Loved the article, rated up. I would like to see a Super Bowl too as well as the Carnival in Brazil. Another place on my list is New Zealand.
