Heaven on Earth
There is something simply breathtaking about the mountains. When I say mountains, I mean those massive, rugged mountains with the snow-white peaks. Although let's be clear, I'm not talking about the strenuous activities like mountain climbing, trekking and the likes. If you are interested in such activities, you already know how amazing these mountains are and need no convincing! I, however, am talking about just being surrounded by these magnificent creations and experiencing that feeling of complete and utter awe.
Let's broaden this picture and get a real feel of what visiting these regions would be like.
There is excitement at the start of the trip, waiting in anticipation for what's to come. Soon, you catch the first glimpse of a far-off peak. Is that really a mountain in between those clouds? It couldn't be, that's way too high up. A little closer and you are sure that it is indeed a snow-white peak. It just takes your breath away. As time goes by, these peaks seem to become the new normal—but it's far from normal.
The amazing thing is that the scenery keeps getting better and better. At higher altitudes, the views are just extraordinary. It's not only the mountains but also the streams, rivers, lakes and valleys which make it look like something out of this world.
Why You Should Visit the Mountains
If you're not already convinced, here are 8 reasons to take a mountain vacation.
- Incredible Journey
- Amazing Sights to See
- Peaceful Environment
- Being Adventurous
- Fresh Mountain Air
- Cool Weather
- Forget Your Worries
- Stunning Photos
“The mountains are calling and I must go.”
— John Muir
1. Incredible Journey
The long drives up and down the winding roads are thrilling. You get to see the constant change in the surroundings as you travel at different altitudes. There is anticipation at almost every turn and bend, which usually never disappoints. It's mesmerizing to just stare out the window and take it all in. There would probably be no impatient questions like "Are we there yet?"
2. Amazing Sights to See
Have you ever felt that feeling of pure exhilaration when you just can't believe what you see? Well, almost all mountainous scenery inspires this feeling. There is an overwhelming sense of peace and happiness that is almost indescribable. There are usually several amazing places to visit nearby, like rivers, streams, lakes, valleys, passes, waterfalls, etc. They might sometimes be a bit far-off, but the journey is usually worth it. It's a dream come true for all nature-lovers.
3. Peaceful Environment
To just sit there in the midst of the magnificent mountains brings a sense of peace and calm. You could be in the valley looking up at the towering peaks, or you could be at the top looking down at the beautiful valley. You could be by the crystal clear river or even in the middle of a small town. Everywhere and everything around is just so peaceful. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the calmness. You would probably feel like just switching off your phone to avoid unwanted disturbances—if only you didn't need that camera!
4. Being Adventurous
There are numerous things to do for the adventurous. Hiking, climbing, camping, river rafting, mountain biking, skiing and even things like paragliding in some places. However, if these activities aren't really your cup of tea, well—you could just sit back and relax with an actual cup of tea and enjoy the views! Or maybe you could start with just a few short hikes. It is often said, "The best view comes after the hardest climb." Now, this might not sound too tempting to the not-so-adventurous, but, it doesn't necessarily have to be the hardest climb—even a small hike would surely help you take back some even better memories.
5. Fresh Mountain Air
And, of course, the air up there is so fresh. Away from all the pollution. I know, I know—a reason like "fresh air" would probably not be very high up on your list, but the difference is very obvious once you're actually there. When you reach a certain altitude amidst the beautiful surroundings, you would immediately be able to feel the crisp air on your face. It's just so refreshing and cool; you would not need to worry about things like your usual allergies. Only then would you realize how much pollution affects the city air that we are all so used to breathing in.
6. Cool Weather
When on a trip, the weather plays an important role. These regions have a cooler, more desirable climate. Both winter and summer in these regions have their own perks. Winters can be the perfect time to witness a snow-covered paradise. In summers, valleys would be filled with beautiful blooming flowers, and all the places worth visiting would be accessible. You can choose the perfect season to visit, depending on what type of experience you would like to have.
7. Forget Your Worries
There could even be some parts of the trip where you might not be able to stop smiling. It brings a great deal of joy to witness how magnificent nature can be. When there are towering mountains before you, their sheer magnitude becomes quite unbelievable. You start to realize that you and your problems are so tiny. It can stop your worrying about futile things, and instead, help you to take some time to be thankful and show gratitude.
Once you experience this feeling of pure joy and peace, there is no going back. Even when you reminisce about these beautiful moments, you can often feel that awe and wonder inside you. This may sound silly to you, but, believe me, I too was once in your shoes—and then I was proved wrong.
8. Stunning Photos
For those who love photography or even those who just love to get that flawless backdrop for social media posts, this is the place for you. Almost every sight is worth capturing. You will surely have a gallery full of photos and videos once you are done with your trip. Although, don't get too caught up in this—take the time to appreciate the beauty through your own eyes, too.
Plan Your Trip Well
As incredible as it may sound, there are also a few things to keep in mind while planning this trip.
- Pick a good destination: Indeed, you may not always have amazing experiences. To help ensure that you do, thorough research and a good itinerary are required. Destinations which have grown to be too popular among tourists can sometimes take away the charm of the place, and you may be left disappointed. Even if you do plan a trip to a touristy place, always arrange for some time to explore the more secluded areas around.
- Proper clothing: The winters especially can get very cold, so appropriate clothing is required. Be sure to pack your thermals, a good jacket, boots and lots of layers.
- Altitude sickness: In case some of the places are at a very high altitude, altitude sickness could be a possibility. It is good to be prepared in case of such a situation.
- Motion sickness: Travel on winding mountain roads may not be a pleasant journey for some. A few tablets to prevent motion sickness should help to ease any discomfort.
- Unpredictable weather: The weather can be very unpredictable in these areas. It is best to have a good idea of the weather patterns during your stay. In winters, some areas or routes may even be shut due to snowfall or landslides. Have back-up plans just in case.
An Experience Like No Other
It is quite obvious that every detail cannot be captured in writing, pictures or videos. You might even think that some portrayals are not all that impressive. However, it's a completely different story once you are actually there. Destinations like these need to be experienced. Once you do, you can attempt to describe your experience—but, I can assure you that you would never come close to the actual thing.

It's wonderful that you have mountains so close by, Bill—you can plan short visits whenever you need a break. I'm sure that your hiking experiences would be one of the things that you will always cherish.

I have never been an ocean kind of guy, but I love the mountains. I don't know where you live, but here in Western Washington we have the Olympic Mountains thirty minutes to our northwest, and the Cascade Mountains two hours to our east, and I couldn't begin to tell you the number of hours and days I've spent hiking those trails. Heaven on Earth for this man.
