A visit to Scotland
It was supposed to be a lazy day of sightseeing. A whisky distillery in the morning, lunch at an old mill and then back to our 13th-century castle accommodation in the evening. Yet from the moment we laid eyes on our Scottish busdriver, we knew it was going to be a memorable tour.
"Is this Hollywood movie star really our bus driver?" asks my companion on our busload of women. "Is he married?" someone else asks.
To imagine our busdriver is to picture all of Scotland in one man. Dark-blue tartan kilt, woolen knee breeches bound with twine, silver blade tucked into the top of his hose and leather sporran lashed around his hips. He is blond and goateed, with a lilting accent peppered with "ayes". Even his company-issue polo shirt seems sexy. More Liam Neeson than Mel Gibson. His eyes are as hopeful as a puppy with his leash.
"Would you want to go up to the Highlands?" he asks us. You is yee. Go is goo.
"We could goo up to the Highlands tomorra mornin', if yeed leek," he continues. "Weeell have to leave a wee bit early but weell still be back in time foo lunch. It's soo close, I cannae believe it's noo in yee itinerary."
We cannae believe it either. Later, he tells us that he has travelled the world with his bagpipes in his backpack, probably being the only Scotsman to have piped in Salzburg and Sydney and everywhere in between. This info surely adds up to the romantic idea most women have about Scottish men.
Worldwide it seems a lot of the female population are fixated on Scottish men as the ultimate romantic hero. What they appear to have in mind is along the lines of Mel Gibson’s portrayal of Wallace in Braveheart; son of a wild, beautiful, tempestuous and untamed land, steeped in romantic history, independent, hardy and ready to take on – and defeat - anyone who threatens his homeland or his 'wummin’… Darling Mel had women everywhere sighing for a Highlander of their very own !
Another perfect Scottish example of skill and charm must be Bond, James Bond. He wears sex appeal like a second skin by the way he walks, moves and looks, making it impossible for women not to notice him in a sexual way. The immortal portrayal by Sean Connery makes Commander Bond very emphatically a Scot… And when he opens his mouth there’s this sexy brogue – rough and masculine, described as chocolate for the ears !
Answers you may get when you ask...
"WHAT DO YOU WEAR UNDER YOUR KILT?"
- How badly do you want to know?
- How warm are your hands?
- Me mother once told me a real lady wouldn't ask. She was right, God bless 'er.
- My Scottish pride.
- Sorry, I'm a bit shy and not much good with words. Give me your hand...
- Talcum powder
"WHAT'S UNDER YOUR KILT?"
- A wee set of pipes.
- My shoes and socks.
- String - I had to tie it up so it didn’t hang below the kilt.
- What God graced me with.
"WHAT'S WORN UNDER YOUR KILT?"
- Nothing is worn, everything is in perfect working order.
Men in kilts
And speaking of Sean Connery... His Friends of Scotland charity produces Dressed to Kilt, the most prestigious Scottish fashion show in the world which kicks-off Tartan Week in New York each year. The non-profit organization promotes Scotland in the USA and the fashion show tartans and kilts.
And do women find men in kilts attractive? Hell, yeah, you can bet your life they do and wonder at what may or may not be underneath ! In modern language not wearing anything below the kilt is often referred to as going "Commando" or "Regimental", both terms have their roots in military tradition.
The rule against wearing anything under the kilt was once so strict that until World War II inspections of Black Watch troops included having them step on a mirror. For officers, violating the rule cost the offender a bottle of port. Now the under-the-kilt dress is optional, but options don't come easily to men who believe in tradition – most highland kilted soldiers go “regimental” and so does the average kilt-wearing Scot !
But is this Scottish image realistic ?
A recent online survey showed that Scottish men are not considered that romantic after all. Almost a fifth of Scottish women surveyed said they didn’t think their men took enough time in bed and said they ‘could be more romantic’. 16% of the Scottish men surveyed seemed to back this up by voting a ‘hotel room’ as the best place to take a first date (the highest figure in Europe apparently)! 14% of Scottish women surveyed said their partner had even answered the phone during sex!
In another survey, where women from 20 countries were to rate nations on their talent in the bedroom and give reasons for their answers, the Scots lovers were considered to be 'too loud' and were therefore ranked 8th as the world's worst lovers.
Nevertheless, the sexy and romantic image of Scotsmen is quite persistent. Living in a period where Scots and people of Scots heritage have a real joy in promoting this heritage in culture, dress, drink, music and sports, it's not surprising that you can see some new Scottish laddies on the stage. Below some of Scotland's finest (I think)...

I lived in Fife for 5 years, I never saw a good looking Scottish man in all that time, apart from my Scottish husband. No bias, he just doesn’t look like he’s from there. All the good looking ones are tv or movie stars. The men I saw were mostly short, ugly, balding or no teeth. Don’t go to Scotland thinking you’re gonna get yourself a Jamie Fraser.

I don't know. I am no Scotish guy, just a Newyorikan born in New Jersey, USA. And the image I have in my head of all these Scotish guys in "kilt" [or "skirt"?] playing bagpipes & drinking whiskey. So I don't know.
PS: Excuse me any Scotish guy who felt I was unfair in my comment.
John5333 on February 23, 2017:
Seriously, go to Scotland, if you like white trainers, pot bellies, blue jeans and shaved purple head look and an agressive pit bull.
That is what most Scottish men and also northern English ones look like.
Probably, if they took care of themselves they would look better.
You are looking at the ones who take care of themselves and got away.
Take a reality check!

I'm American, from Scottish descent. I have had to beat women of all ages, off my brother's my whole life. They are tall, dark hair with clear blue eyes. If that wasn't enough, they are VERY charming. I used to warn new female friends about them, and not to become interested in them, but it never worked ( then or now). So WOMEN BEWARE!

Fiona from South Africa on December 18, 2013:
Well, having a name like Fiona Jean McKay, I think you may say I'm a little biased but, what the hell - there is nothing sexier than a Scotts accent and if Gerard Butler, Ewan MacGregor or Dougray Scott ever come to Howick, I have a band of friends who would happily kidnap any one of them. Great hub - I really enjoyed it. (The eye candy definitely didn't hurt)

Jess Brazeau from Canada on November 14, 2013:
I thoroughly enjoyed this hub! There's just something about a Scottish accent that makes me giggle like a little girl. lol. Some women love a French accent, I am a fan of the Scottish one... I love the way they say "aye" instead of yes. lol.
Very nice list, as well. I'm a fan of Gerard Butler, for the most part.. Some of his movies are less than fantastic (Bounty Hunter, for one... Love him.. Love Jen Aniston, but for some reason, that movie was just awful) ... He was amazing in 300 and P.S I Love You... Love Mr. Connery too, though I'd never heard that he once said it was okay to smack a woman.... not too sure how I feel about him now.
Lovely hub! Voted up!

I'm really glad I found this page. I learned a lot. :) I would love to meet a Scottish man, but Welsh or Irish might be good too, lol. I've always been attracted to the accent, but getting to know a few would be great and find out for myself about what they're really like. How in the world do you find them on Facebook? The ones that are for real at least. :)

Hi there sisters! Well, maybe I lived in the wrong place in Scotland! Maybe you have to live in one of the big cities (Edinburgh or Glasgow) to find or meet these sexy Scottish men!
I don't think I am overly picky, but the pickings were very thin! I lived in the Highlands of Scotland for 11 years and sorry guys and ladies, did not meet one I wanted to spend the rest of my years with!!!
Boozing, stalking (deer), fishing and moody silences were the norm!!!
Their wives complained too!
What is that old saying...The grass is always greener on the other side?????
Hey listen.....I am not saying they are not out there but like anywhere, you have to hunt real hard for a winner.
Make good buddies though.
Jess on May 29, 2013:
They aren't sexy on average. Notice that most of the Scottish guys people find attractive are the ones who look like they have Mediterranean heritage. From the Roman expansion into Britain: People like David Gandy & Collin Farell are so over hyped because of their dark mediterranean like features. That are rare in Britain in comparison to the pasty and pale types. People like Gandy, Gerard, & Farrel would fit better in Italy or Spain than they do Britain. Because the average Brit does not have their features.

I personally think Scottish men or men of Scottish descent are THE hottest. I get weak in the knees at the sound of a brogue. And a man who can caber toss?! It's just in my blood. As a direct descendent of Mary Queen of Scots, and with Highland blood on both sides, I am programmed to love it. I also love the Colors, Topography and Climate of Scotland. I'm always drawn to places that look like it.

I always thought Sean Connery was Welsh. I guess you live and learn. I love men with dark hair and light eyes, so I guess one could say I would be in heaven if I went to Scottland. I believed that most of the time the men there do not wear kilts, but wear them only on special occasions. Still, I would love to visit and find out for myself.
