What is Niagara Falls?

Numerous waterfalls cascade down the Niagara Escarpment in southern Ontario, Canada. The area is internationally renowned for its beauty and natural wonders. The cliffs are composed of hard granite, and the water flows over the edge at a height of 248 meters (853 feet). The Horseshoe Falls spans 160 meters (525 feet) and drops over a cliff of 95 meters (310 feet).

The Niagara River originates near Lake Erie and empties into Lake Ontario. At its lowest point, the river is just 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide. The falls form when the river drops over the edge of the escarpment on its way to the lake.

When to Visit

Niagara Falls is a magnificent natural wonder that should not be missed if you're ever in the area. The falls can be seen both during the day and at night, but during the day, the crowds are generally smaller.

Morning and early afternoon are the best times to visit, as the falls are less crowded then but still have a lot of people around. Evening visits can also be nice, especially if there's a light show going on.

Niagara Falls is definitely a place where you want to go during the summertime, though, as it gets very hot and humid up near the falls.
