Trip to Bengaluru Onboard Dharwad Intercity Express

Leaving From Dharwad Railway Station

It was in the last week of February 2016 that we had to visit Dharwad in North Karnataka to attend my cousin's wedding. After the wedding, we had to return to Bengaluru the next day. I did not make any bookings on the train number 16590 Kolhapur-Bengaluru Rani Chennamma Express as I needed at least three lower berths in an air-conditioned three-tier coach or A.C.3 Tier coach. Instead, I decided to book tickets on 16535 Solapur-Mysuru Golgumbaz Express operating via Hubballi onboard air-conditioned two-tier coach or A.C.2 Tier coach. For this, we had to travel to Hubballi which is twenty kilometers away from Dharwad.

On the D-day, we decided to travel to Hubballi by NWKRTC's public transport bus which was conveniently available every thirty minutes from Dharwad. We started to prepare for check-out from our hotel room. The ticket status at the time booking our tickets in Golgumbaz Express onboard air-conditioned two-tier coach or A.C.2 Tier coach was waitlisted. However, at 8 pm, the final charts were prepared and all but one berth was confirmed in the train. We then had to cancel the check-out and postpone it to the next day. In the meanwhile, I looked up for trains leaving to Bengaluru from Dharwad on the next day and the best option as the train number 12726 Dharwad-Bengaluru Siddaganga Intercity Express leaving from Dharwad railway station at 5.30 am.

Onboard The Intercity Express

I then quickly booked our tickets in Siddaganga Intercity-Express onboard an air-conditioned chair car coach i.e. C1. However, our tickets were waitlisted yet again until the final chart preparation by 10 pm or early morning 5 am. We stayed back in our hotel rooms and decided to leave the next day early morning.

Our tickets were then confirmed after the final chart preparation and we were assigned four seats with two window seats in coach number C1. The next day we got up early at 4.30 am and prepared to check out the hotel room by 5 am. The ride to the railway station was just fifteen minutes from the hotel. We soon reached the Dharwad railway station and platform number 1 was already shunted with our train the Intercity Express. There was no much crowd in the morning at Dharwad railway station. We boarded our coach quickly and occupied the seats onboard the air-conditioned chair car coach C1.

The coach was vacant at the time of the train's departure from Dharwad railway station. The next major stop was at Hubballi junction and as usual, the crowd was more at this railway station, all heading towards Bengaluru city. The train arrived at Hubballi junction railway station at 6 am and had a brief stop for about twenty minutes over here.

The coach C1 was now abuzz with almost all the passengers occupying the reserved vacant seats. Only a few seats remained vacant till Davanagere and Arasikere. As soon as the train left we ordered a hot cup of coffee from the pantry staff. I then took out Samit Da's Indian Rail Atlas and started my railfanning activity by looking at the map and referring to the passing-by railway stations enroute.

Arriving at Bengaluru

We crossed Haveri, Harihara, Davanagere, and other stations en route in quick succession. The train then reached Arasikere Junction at around 11 am and I got down here to get some fresh air. I also had hot masala dosa and a cup of filter coffee and relished the same. The train soon left Arasikere and arrived at Tiptur and Tumakuru before arriving at Yeswanthpur.

We then decided to have lunch only at home and disembarked at Yeswanthpur railway station itself. We hailed a pre-paid auto-rickshaw to reach home within thirty minutes from the railway station. Thus my first trip to Bengaluru from Dharwad in the daytime ended on a happy note.
