Travelling The East-Coast in Australia

  • Updated date:

Australia is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and a paradise for Travellers and especially Backpackers. The most popular destination is the East-Coast and there are good reasons for that. In this article I want to introduce you to this amazing part of Down Under and give you ideas and advice in case you want to travel in Australia.

What you need to know is that the East-Coast basically means the way between Sydney and Cairns, which is around 2.500 Kilometres. It is the most famous Part of Australia for Travellers and most of them start their travel in Sydney and then go up to Cairns or the other way Round.

In case you want to travel the East-Coast you should consider at least a month, which means that you really have to hurry up and do not have enough time to work at all. Three Months is a proper time that you can plan with, in case you want to experience the East-Coast more in-depth. Moreover you can easily spend half a year travelling around here or even more, depending on which destinations you would like to visit and the time you have to spend.

The best time of the year for this is the Australian Summer, which basically start in November. so if you want to travel the East-Coast in the summer season, the time between November and February might be the best choice.

Furthermore this article is written in the way that you can travel along the East-Coast from South to North, starting in Sydney and finishing in Cairns.

When you ever have the chance to spend some time in Sydney then there are plenty of things to do. In case you want to visit a decent Beach you can go to Bondi Beach or Manly Beach, which are gorgeous and give you the opportunity to go surfing or chill out on the white sand.

Sydney´s Night-Life offers an almost endless list of things to do. The bars are great places to spend the night. Some of the Most Famous Bars are “The Three Monkeys”, “Scruffy Murphy's”, “Side Bar” or “World Bar” these bars are divided into different parts. In the Three Monkeys for example you will find the Bar area on the ground floor. Then a Live-music area on the upper floor, a chill out area on the Top Floor and additionally a club area in the basement. So basically there is something for everybody and some of the other bigger bars are structured in the same way, so just give it a try.

Moreover Sydney has much to offer. When you have time you should definitely visit the Botanic Gardens and when you are there it is just a short walk to the famous Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. In addition the Sydney Tower is nice and you can see the city from above or if you would like to see animals visit the Sydney Aquarium. This is a great place and the main attraction is the huge shark tunnel, where you can see sharks and giant turtles from underneath. Next to the Aquarium is the Wild Life Park, which I would not recommend because there are way better parks out there like the Taranga Zoo.

Byron Bay

This is the place to be if you are looking for a laid-back surfer Paradise. Byron Bay is the most popular place for Travellers on the East-Coast, simply because it is gorgeous and awesome. There are plenty of Hostels, where you can stay and most of the time can go surfing or partying, whatever you prefer. There are several Surf Schools in case you have not learned it yet and in case you know how to surf you can find plenty of shops, where you can hire your Surfing gear. The Nightlife is amazing and there are lots of Parties almost everywhere in Town.

A small but pretty cool feature of Byron Bay is “Slap The GOON”, as many travellers already have recognized there are many people walking around with these T-Shirts and basically Byron Bay is the place where it has been invented.  GOON is the cheap and let´s call it economic drink most Travellers especially Backpackers buy and drink regularly because let´s be honest, it is cheaper than anything else. “Slap The GOON” literally means that you slap the Space-bag, which contains the GOON before you drink it. I am still not sure that it has any effect but normally one tends to do so if somebody tells you it would.

Surfers Paradise

Similar to Byron Bay, Surfers Paradise is an amazing spot to go Surfing and moreover it is a quite modern city with lots of Skyscrapers and clubs. Even the benches in the streets are shaped like Surfboards here. From my point of view it is not as nice as Byron Bay, simply because it is that modern and does not have the laid-back Australian style like other places. On the positive side there are nice beaches and you have plenty of possibilities to go out.

This is mainly the biggest city on the East-Coast and does have a decent Nighlife and many places to go. On the contrary there are no beaches and the city itself is quite busy and crowded. One of the main features of Brisbane is that you can find plenty of Jobs here. Most of the None-Farming Jobs are available here and it is basically the only city on the East-Coast, except of Sydney and Cairns. So if you are looking for work in a City and you want to travel the East-Coast, Brisbane might be your best chance.

In case you are an advanced Surfer, this is the place to be. Noosa is famous for it´s huge waves and the many Beaches, which you can find here. There is even one of the few Nudist Beaches located in Noosa Heads, which is famous for many Travellers. Additionally there are Beaches with smaller waves, which are suitable for Beginners.

Noosa itself is a nice small town, where you have some decent Hostels and nice Bars to spend the nights. Moreover there are plenty of Festivals going on every year like the “Festival of Surfing”, “Noosa Triathlon”, “Rock'n Tewantin”, “Noosa Long Weekend”, and “Pomona King of Mountain”

Fraser Island

Located North from Noosa Heads lies Fraser Island, the biggest Sand Island in the World and home to the most genuine Dingos worldwide. Most travellers consider a Trip to Fraser Island as the Highlight of their journey and let´s say it that way, it simply is amazing. In case you are planning a Trip to Fraser Island you should plan at least a weekend or longer and the best way to explore the Island is by 4 Wheel Drive. With a 4WD you can discover the most hidden spots of the Island and driving yourself is an adventure of it´s own. Just be careful with the Dingos. They are not really dangerous but they want and will go for your food. Hang up the food high in a tree or hide it in the car and keep in mind that every single bite that is not hidden will be eaten by Dingos.

Bunderberg Distillery

For many Australians and Travellers the Bundaberg Rum is the finest one of it´s kind in Australia and directly located on the East-Coast is the Bundaberg Distillery, which you can visit. There is a museum and the Distillery itself, where you can follow a guided Tour and learn how Bundaberg Rum is made and what it´s History is. Moreover there is a small Tasting Session in the end, where you can try different kinds of the Bundaberg Rum, from the Classic Version to Chocolate flavoured Rum, which was really nice when I was there.  Normally you won´t need more than one day to spend in Bundaberg because except the Distillery there is not much to see and the Town is really quiet and there is not much going on. Just in case you are looking for work there are several Farms around Bundaberg, where you can go Fruit-Picking.

Whitsunday Islands

One of the most beautiful parts of the Country are the Whitsunday Islands. Located directly at the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays are probably the best place to go Scuba Diving and going on a Cruise. The closest Town is Airlie Beach, which is a nice and laid-back Town, with nice Hostels and a decent Nightlife but most famous for the close distance to the Whitsundays. From Airlie Beach you can organize your Trip to the Whitsunday Island, whether you would like to go on a Day Trip or a whole weekend. There are plenty of boats starting daily and most of them already have all the Snorkeling and Scuba Diving gear on board. A nice tip here is that most boats are looking for staff, while going to the Whitsundays and if you are lucky you can do an easy task on board and make the trip for free.

Magnetic Island by Townsville

In case you want to spend some time in Townsville you should definitely visit Magnetic Island. This is a small but gorgeous Island close to the city and home to many genuine species like Wallabees and Koalas. You can easily reach the Island by taking the ferry from Townsville. One of the nice features of the Island are the Scooters, which you can hire from several shops and drive the whole day. You are able to drive to almost every spot of the Island and normally one day is sufficient to explore the whole Island. Additionally there are beautiful beaches and plenty of Hiking Tracks, which you can explore. One of the nicest spots is are the Stone-Wallabees, which you can visit and hand feed.

As Cairns is the starting or ending point of most travels it is a pure party town. 7 days a week there are plenty of places to go and the the Nightlife is amazing. The most popular hostel is “Gilligans Backpackers” and they organize plenty of parties as well. Another famous bar is the “Whoolshed”, where you can party all night long. Other then parties there is not much to do, although Cairns offers Bungee Jumping, from a 60 meters high platform, even with a BMX and other trips. One Highlight of the city is the “Cairns Esplanade”, where you can go swimming and chilling out.
