Traveling As A Part Of Education

What Is Travelling?

Traveling means to go from one place to another on foot or by any kind of vehicle the situation allows. Man is by nature a traveling or mobile being. It is, so to speak, his inborn habit and interest to know the unknown, to see the unseen, to enjoy the unenjoyed thing with a view to filling his mind with ideas, knowledge, thoughts and experiences.

Is Traveling A Part Of Education?

Traveling is an important way to gain knowledge and acquire education. It gives the first hand knowledge to the traveler and the books gives the second hand knowledge. Bookish knowledge be obtained from reading books and practical knowledge can be gathered from traveling. It makes history real. Historical accounts of the glory of ancient remain unreal till we visit the great ruins and world heritage sites, To read about the Battle of Plassey one thing and to see the scene of our humiliation is another thing. Traveling also gives us a true conception of the geographical, geological and mineralogical resources of our earth. It creates in us the desire for investigation , exploration and discovery.

Traveling helps the traveler see the vast area of the country and her natural scenery or beauty. It also helps the traveler know how the wonderful earth is full of natural beauty, attractions, novelties, variety and diversity. Education is not perfect and complete without traveling. It has more indirect lesson to teach us. The man who lives in a rural area of the country is not the same man after he has visited the town. His mind is enriched; his out look broadened; he learns that the world is much bigger place than his village. The wider he travels, the greater the benefit. He will shed his prejudices quicker; he will take to new ideas more promptly; he will be less arrogant about his racial or national superiority. At the same time, comparison with others will create in him a more thoughtful appreciation of the virtues of his own people. It also removes his deficiency, ignorance, barbarism, dogmatism, darkness, mental torment by satisfying and filling the mind with pleasure and widening his mental horizon.

Traveling Helps To Earn Practical Knowledge:

Traveling also develops resourcefulness. In our travels, we are faced with many unforeseen difficulties. We may not know the language of one place and so feel utterly helpless. At another, an expected remittance fails to arrive in time. At times, we run short of some necessary articles which cannot be obtained at the place. Hundreds of other difficulties may arise. The traveling man will be found more resourceful in devising means to overcome these. He is ready-witted, quick to invent and prompt to execute. These are lessons much greater than mere book-learning. The traveler may have to be his own cook, to be his own tailor, to do his own washing up. in a word to look after himself. He becomes what we call an all round man. We can fit him into any scheme or position.

Travelling vs Education

Usefulness:

Traveling is very useful for us especially for the learners. It provides us not with bookish knowledge but with practical experiences. It gives us an opportunities to meet our friends ana relatives living in far off places. Travelers who leave accounts of their travels become the allies of the historian. We are thrilled to read now what HUEN TSANG and IBN BATUTA witnessed in then ASIA.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on February 14, 2016:

As you and others have already said, traveling opens our senses and minds which helps to broaden our knowledge of people, places and things. The education value of travel is priceless! Of course reading about where we might be traveling before and even afterwards augments our experiences. Both have great value.

Vespa Woolf from Peru, South America on February 08, 2016:

I agree that the best way to get an education comes not from a book but from life experience. Traveling is an excellent way to see the world and how we fit into it. Thank you for sharing.

Leah on January 20, 2016:

There are many people who have traveled almost the whole world. It has been seen from statistics that these people are more knowledgeable and charming compared to others. Even two people who are working as colleagues for almost 30 years are also subjected to this experience. The one who has traveled more is the more enthusiastic in most of the cases. This is solely because of the benefits of the travel. Earning knowledge and experiencing new things- these are the biggest benefits. Also you got to know about different cultures from where you can learn.

The children can also be greatly benefited from traveling. That’s why there are educational tours in most of the schools, colleges and universities. They can learn the art of working together and develop leading qualities from these tours. Also they will develop the habit of living in environments that are different from their usual ones.

Not everything can be learned at school, college or in any educational institution. There are many things people learn from experience. As travelling is a great experience, you can learn many different things from it. In fact travelling is one of the greatest sources of gaining practical knowledge. You may learn something that you haven’t in your whole life from a single tour. Also travelling is good for health. It refreshes your mind and helps you to become relaxed from your busy schedule. In modern world, everyone is busy. There is hardly any room for relaxation in the normal schedule. With travelling, both your body and mind can stay away from the monotonous life for some time and get back to work with a much refreshed mood.

Travel really is an education in itself, of different people, different cultures, architecture and customs. I like what you've said,

"The man who lives in a rural area of the country is not the same man after he has visited the town."
