Touring Rome, Italy - Very Crowded, Strange Encounters, Lovely Parks

John has traveled extensively has developed 5 website guides for touring Australia & Worldwide. John has developed travelers tips & tricks.

Rome is huge and very crowded with lots of water sellers hassling you. There is lots to see, but the crowds defeated us at the Colosseum and the other major attractions. Managed to book a ticket online for the Vatican Museums for a nominated time slot, but it was extremely crowded inside.

The artwork was stunning in the Sistine Chapel, but it was packed inside and this limited the experience. There is a fabulous array of art on display at various galleries, but get there early to avoid the crush.

We took a ferry cruise on the river and took the the hop off hop on tour to locate places that appealed to us.

Taxis are expensive but it is very tiring waiting for the tour bus and you can waste a lot of time getting to your nominated attraction.

See the photos for a snap-shot of Rome. We chose to visit some of the extensive gardens surrounding the Villa Borghese. These 'English' style gardens contain the Galleria Borghese, a zoo and a number of buildings and museums.

We also explore some of the Crypts and Catacombs of Rome and had some bizarre experiences. The most shocking was the Capuchin Crypt and Museum located underneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini on the Via Veneto, near the Colosseum.

Capuchin Crypt and Museum - All Photos are Original by janderson99

Next we visited the Capuchin Crypt and Museum located underneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. This church is located in central Rome on the Via Veneto close to Piazza Barberini. My fellow travelers wanted to visit some of the catacombs in Rome. You can join catacomb tours, but the Capuchin Crypt is probably the most bizarre and extreme of them all. On display are are bizarre and scary skeletal art created using real skulls, arm and leg bones and vertebrae. Apparently by some bored guy who dug up the skeletons of 3700 Capuchin monks and used them to create wall decorations. Huge numbers of the bones are nailed to the walls to form macabre 'art', Others hang from the ceiling as light fixtures. There is even a skeletal clock face. I would not like to visit this place at night or be there during a power blackout. This place is weird and very scary and is not recommended to those who suffer from nightmares.

Villa Burghese Gardens in Rome - All Original Photos - janderson99

Tired of the crowds we visited the Villa Burghese inspired by the TV series. The park was absolutely fabulous and very relaxing. There was a tiny lake, no bigger than a farm dam with people rowing about in slow motion amid the ducks, turtles fish and seagulls. There is a zoo and extensive walking paths and gardens. After 3 hours of enjoyable walking in the sunshine we found the Burghese gallery, but were told to come back in three days time as it was booked out. Ah well it did not matter, we were blown away but the park and its peacefulness. What an inspiring contrast to the pack of crowds at the main attractions. We also visited several of the lesser known art galleries and Museums. The crowds spoiled the fun and so we probably will not be back. Still it was nice to see the major attractions from the outside and take in the ambience away from the tourist areas.
