You might have read about Bangkok and even been there, but did you get out of the touristy areas and discover the lesser-known and more unusual things to see and do? Alongside the countless shopping areas, markets, temples, street hawkers, cheap food establishments, bars and usual tuk-tuk tours, there are many weird and wonderful things to discover while travelling around this awesome city.

5 Unique and Unusual Things to Do in Bangkok

The first time you visit Bangkok, it can be hard to step off of that oh-so-comfy tourist trail, but I’m here to tell you it’s so worth it! Now I’m not just talking about visiting a local’s house or eating a fried cockroach on the side of the road (even though that is pretty weird). There are many places to visit and things to see that will totally change your views on the crazy, beautiful place that is Bangkok.

1. Hang Out in an Airplane Graveyard

Looking like a scene from an apocalyptic movie, the airplane graveyard sits in the Ramkhamhaeng neighbourhood on the outskirts of central Bangkok. Now home to a refugee family, if granted permission, you can walk through a group of abandoned planes for a fee of around 200–300 Baht. A jumbo jet and four smaller planes lie in overgrown grass in random states of disrepair, making for some spooky and surreal pics.

2. Visit a Hello Kitty Spa

I did say this post wasn’t for the image conscious! You’ve got to admit that dragging a grown man to sit in a massage chair surrounded by Hello Kitty would definitely be a very unusual and hilarious sight! So if you’re travelling with a guy, this place is a must visit for a weird and wonderful day out. Get your nails done and have a few pesky hairs plucked away, all while sipping from pink teacups and eating kitty-shaped cookies!

3. Try to Stay Calm in a Ghost Tower

A once-luxurious 49-storey hotel, the Sathorn Unique now stands forlorn and abandoned from the 1997 Tom Yum Goog financial crisis. Locals believe it’s now filled with evil spirits and call it the "Ghost Tower" while giving it a wide berth. But inquisitive tourists looking for adventure can climb it with a sneaky backhand tip to the security guard of around 200–300 Baht. Just make sure you take a torch and some water with you and don’t let any unusual noises freak you out!

4. Spend a Night in Prison (Not Literally!)

If you’re looking for a hotel with a totally unique vibe, look no further than Sook Station Bangkok. This prison-themed hotel gives its guests black-and-white striped pajamas, a mug shot on entry and a lights-out curfew. Your room/cell has iron bars and striped curtains and you have a prison number to get you in and out of your room. But don’t worry, you’re not completely restricted, you can come and go as you please and even enjoy a roof-top hot tub and in-house coffee shop—when you’ve shown good behaviour, of course!

5. Chow Down on Happy Cheese Toast

While this might sound like it’s got an extra few ingredients in that might have you laughing hysterically at anything and everything, Happy Cheese Toast really is just a delicious cheese toasted sandwich with gooey strings of rainbow-coloured cheese inside. Why might you want to eat this, you may ask!? Well, it certainly is a feast for the eyes and makes for some great selfies, while also actually tasting amazing! So if you’re craving cheese and you want some out-of-this-world snaps that will put a smile on your face, Happy Cheese Toast in Bangkok is the place to head for.
