Having just arrived in Stockholm, my kitchen was not yet set up. This called for lunch outside. Unknown to the Swedish cuisine and language, I was wary about what to order. A friend of mine suggested Swedish meatballs. Until then I had no idea what it was. However, the description of the dish sounded familiar and I went ahead and ordered it. Since then I am completely in love with Swedish meatballs.

As quintessential as it gets, the most traditional form of Swedish meatballs or kottbullar are made of ground pork and beef. It is served with creamy mashed potatoes, a thick brown gravy, and lingonberry jam. I especially liked the gravy. Preparation styles vary from home to home, region to region. Some prefer the ground meat with a little more fat while some like to keep the amount of pork less in the meatball mixture. The amount of bread crumbs, eggs, onion also varies to obtain the desired soft consistency.

An essential part of the Swedish food menu, meatballs are popularly and easily available in most food outlets around Sweden. However, do not get surprised if a Swede tells you that the best meatballs are prepared by their grandmother. Every Swedish household swears by its meatball recipe. Timeless and characteristic, all mothers and grandmothers have their secret combination of the ingredients for this recipe. However, for those who do not have a Swedish grandma, here are some of the best places to get a taste of authentic Swedish meatballs in Stockholm.

This is where I had my first Swedish meatballs. One of the best value-for-money meals, they serve regular meatballs throughout the day. This is perfect for people on a low budget, starting out on their meatball journey.

Conveniently located in Stockholm’s Old Town, as the name suggests, the restaurant focuses on making traditional Swedish food, thus making it the perfect place to taste this classic Swedish recipe.

Meatballs for the People:

Specialising in meatballs, this mid-range restaurant is famous for the variety it offers on the menu. One can taste various innovative preparation of meatballs here with the perfect rich and creamy brown sauce to go with it.

Restaurant Pelikan:

Another eatery serving traditional Swedish cuisine, this place is particularly famous for its monster-size meatballs prepared with the utmost care to maximize the flavor.

Bakfickan:

This stylish and highly recommended classy restaurant is on the higher side of the budget. Serving potentially the best meatballs in the city, it is particularly famous for the fact that all the parts of the meatballs are served separately. Thus this allows one to mix and add the flavors to their taste.

It would be fun to taste Swedish meatballs while in Sweden. I have only had them in the U.S.
