My Secret Disneyland Tips
- Don't Pay Full Price to Ride Astro Basters
Read about 7 different places where you can get tickets to Disneyland at discounted prices!
Opened in 2005, the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster ride is one of the more popular attractions at Disneyland. A fun ride for both young and old, the riders interactively help Buzz Lightyear defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg by shooting down Buzz’s arch enemies and destroying Zurg’s secret weapon.
You ride in a dual-seated XP-40 Space Cruiser with a blaster gun in hand shooting at moving and fixed targets consisting of triangles, diamonds, squares and circles affixed to Zurg’s henchmen. Every time you hit a target, the target and blaster flashes to give instant feedback of your success. Once you’ve locked onto the target, continue squeezing the trigger to rack up your score.
Astro Blaster Strategy
A game of skill and chance to make the higher levels, you want to concentrate on the triangles and diamonds. These are worth 10,000 and 5,000 points. The square targets are worth 1,000 points and circles are worth a measly 100. Just squeezing the trigger 5 times, while missing the target, will give you 100 points so keep the pressure on.
With a basic triangle/diamond target strategy, you should be able to make it to Level 3 or 4. Beyond that you will need to know where some of the hidden targets are.
- Level 1 Star Cadet: 0 – 1,000
- Level 2 Space Ace: 1,001 – 10,000
- Level 3 Planetary Pilot: 10,001 – 100,000
- Level 4 Space Scout: 100,001 – 300,000
- Level 5 Ranger 1st Class: 300,001 – 600,000
- Level 6 Cosmic Commando: 600,001 – 999,999
- Level 7 Galactic Hero: 1,000,000 +
How Many Triangles Can You Find?
Secret Astro Blaster Targets
Evil Emperor Zurg has a hidden target on the center of his chest. Aim just below the small circle (with a “Z”) on the center of his chest, to get 50,000 – 100,000 points. Zurg rotates so it’s one of the more challenging targets to hit.
There are three hidden targets in dark tunnel. You should be able to hit the left or right targets from either side of the XP-40 Space Cruiser, but make sure that you hit the target at the top of tunnel just as you exit. The top target is worth 100,000 points. The Astro Blaster camera takes a picture of you at this point so hopefully you’re grinning ear-to-ear after jumped up a level or two.
Sometimes the ride will stop to let on handicapped or disabled riders. Use this time wisely since this is a rare event that will push you up into Level 6 or 7.
Despite its popularity, the line moves fast with a typical wait time of under 15 minutes. The Astro Blaster FastPass dispenser was recently removed and replaced with the Star Tours FastPass, so you now have to wait in line to ride again.
Ever since Star Tours opened up in 2011, there are less riders on Buzz, so you can achieve higher scores by riding more. Continue riding until you get the score you want or until your forearms are so tired that you can't pull the trigger anymore. Hopefully by then you helped Buzz saved the Galaxy from the Evil Emperor Zurg.
Can You Beat My Score?
Howard Young (author) from California on February 14, 2013:
I don't know about the Zerg in Paris, but it's true for Disney World and of course Disneyland. I imagine it's going to be the same at DLRP. Just below the "Z" is somewhat arbitrary, perhaps 3 to 4 inches below is more accurate. Regardless it's difficult to hit because he's rotating and you can't see the target.
As you progress through the tunnel, the hidden targets are best hit in this order. 1) on the right; 2) on the left, and then at the top of tunnel.
No pins are awarded. If you show the cast member your +999,999 score, you may get to ride again without waiting!

Can someone confirm that its also the case for DLRP (Disneyland Resort Paris):
1. Aim just below the small circle (with a “Z”) on the center of his chest, to get 50,000 – 100,000 points.
=) Tried this but had no luck
2. There are three hidden targets in dark tunnel.
=) Until now i've only find 2 of them
3. Do you also receive a special pins when you got the +999.999?
Thanks for the tip to first check if the laser go straight, it might explain why i can't go over the 276.000 the last 2 trips when my personal record is +/-472.000
Thanks in advance for all of the feedback of my fellow Space Rangers ;)
PS: my count of Triangles = 5

@Adrian, Excellent tip. Now if I can get my wife to ride alone...
Adrian on December 11, 2011:
To maximize points, try to ride alone. Also a lot of the guns don't shoot straight so figure out which way yours shoots first and your score will increase. Just got back from Disneyland and got my first over 1 million, 1,432,000.
Sherm on December 06, 2011:
Just read this minutes before getting on. Before these tips I averaged about 150,000. Just focusing in tri and di. I got 495,000 easily. Now to ride again and find the secret targets. Thanks for the tips.

Jason, you hit the spot! Last time my gun kept hitting Zerg's belly so no points :(
Jason on August 23, 2011:
Thanks for the hints. It broke down on a diamond and after getting Zurg in that special spot I got 425,300 and I rocked it!!!
Howard Young (author) from California on July 15, 2011:
Very nice mauiboy! I went last month in June and only got to L4 the gun would not shoot straight. I wish Disneyland would repair or replace the lazer guns.
mauiboy on July 15, 2011:
I was playing and got lucky and it stopped in front of Zurg and I was able to just hammer him. It threw me when the display went to 999999 and froze - nobody says that so keep shooting. I was able to do 1.4M but could have gotten higher if I'd known about the 999999 thing. Level 7 space ranger!!!
Blaster on November 03, 2010:
I've gotten 2 mill L7 over a million is possible
meme on September 11, 2010:
Impossible to get above a million
jakenewland on July 11, 2010:

Coolbeans on May 28, 2010:
L-7 baby beat that
lalatransplant from Denver, CO on August 18, 2009:
Best I ever did was L-5 because the ride stopped twice. Great ride. I always go on it at least 3 times whenever I visit Disney.
cjcarter on August 11, 2009:
One time, my dad was right in front of either a triangle or diamond when the ride broke down. He annihilated the rest of our scores!
Howard Young (author) from California on August 06, 2009:
@cjcarter, I'm still a L-4 Space Scout, but I'm shooting for L-5 on August 16 when the Annual Pass Summer Blackout dates end...
cjcarter on August 06, 2009:
This is great info!!! Me and my family will ride this ride over and over just to get better scores, and it has turned into a big competition! I knew about the secret target on Zurgs chest, but not the ones inside the tunnels. Thanks for the tip!
