Driving Down

Sleepy Hollow is only a two hour drive from where my friend and I live, so we decided that it would be the perfect day trip! It's off season- because Halloween has passed and so there wouldn't be crowds or bad traffic. We took the Mass Turnpike down so we avoided all tolls and had the loveliest of views driving down. The fall foliage was visible on either sides of the highway and we just enjoyed our company and our playlist of slightly questionable songs...

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

The cemetery was the highlight of the trip! If you love beautiful, large, serene cemeteries with graves dating back hundreds of years then this one is for you! Mausoleums, statues, pretty trees, canons(?), hillsides, and ivy covered crypts. We walked through and then had a picnic for a couple hours.

Dutch Church and Burial Grounds

The Dutch Church and Burial Grounds is also a beautiful place to see and is right at the entrance to the cemetery. Here you will see headstones from as early as the late 1600's! Also, if you love souvenirs there is a little tent where vendors sell Sleepy Hollow related merchandise. There postcards and magnets were especially cool and I had to grab a few.

Washington Irving Grave

American author, Washington Irving (1783-1859) is buried at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in a beautiful little iron fenced in area with a gate reading, "Irving". It's a little hard to see but if you have good zoom and pixels on your phone or camera, you can zoom in and make out the headstone quite nicely.

Headless Horseman Sculpture and Bridge

Across from the Dutch Church and Burial Grounds there is the bridge from Irving's, "Headless Horseman" story. There is a little sign, and in the middle of the road there is a little park with a sculpture of the chase scene from the story.
