My Summer in Ireland

Thelma has lived and worked for almost three years in the Republic of Ireland as a spa wellness massage therapist.

May, The Best Month of the Year

Summer is always my favorite season. It is the season of the year that I feel "free". Free of socks, jumper, pullover and all other clothes that I need to wear to make me feel warm.I don´t mean that I want to move around naked. I just want to walk barefoot inside the house or at least sandals, when going out of the house with an airy summer dress . Just like before in my younger years at home, walking under the shadows of banana and coconut trees.

I know, summer in this beautiful country is different than the other countries. May is the best! Sometimes the whole month is sunny and warm and if I´m lucky, the temperature rises until 22°C. It´s warm enough for me but still I don´t feel "free". If you know what I mean.

For the irish people, 17°C is already hot especially when the sun shines and there´s no wind coming from the atlantic ocean. The women wears Flip Flops and lovely summer dresses, sometimes with spaghetti holders. They don´t go sunbathing, instead they put tans on their body. I understand why. Sunbathing is not good anyway especially to their delicate skin that is easily burned by the sun.

So in the warm and sunny days , I spent my hours in the afternoon with Angus, my dog in the beach behind Carne Golf Links in Belmullet. The beach is wide and has a lot of white stones . The broad and wide atlantic ocean before me is full of beauty. Amazing!!! Facing the atlantic ocean, on my right side, I could see Annagh Head with its huge rough stones. On my left side, a private land overlooking the atlantic.

Map of Belmullet is a must have guide in traveling to Ireland. Belmullet is on the beaten track of County Mayo in the Republic of Ireland. One can easily get lost and so having a map is very important for your travel.

Enjoying the day

I usually brought a novel with me so I have something to read while sitting on a huge rock sunbathing and while Angus was busy exploring the surrounding without a leash. Sometimes, Angus and I were just running around near the water which was still cold or just laying down on the white and sandy beach, listening to the sounds of the ocean and smelling the algae and salty fresh air. I called this place my "private" beach for there were mostly no other human being besides me and my dog.

Laying down, I started daydreaming... I was in a remote white island like this, swimming in the deep blue sea. The water was warm with 38°C, different kinds of fishes with different colors swimming around me. A few meters from the beach I could see the jungle full of coconut trees, bananas, pineapple and other plants which are only growing in the tropical countries. I was tired swimming, so I lay down under the shadow of a nipa hut...Then suddenly, there was somebody licking my face. It was Angus, my dog.

After almost 3 hours of daydreaming, Angus and I started walking up the hill near Carne Golf Links going to the parking place where we were collected by my husband. That was a lovely sunny afternoon again! Who knows when will be the next time I´ll be in my "private" beach!!!!

I felt really good enjoying the tranquility of nature! The deep blue skies, the birds flying above us. Oh, how I wish It could always be like this!!!

Hi Thelma!

Great hub! I recently went to the Cliffs of Moher in Co.Clare, Ireland and the seas and beaches there are exactly as you mentioned. I am going to follow you as I love your hubs!

Yes, it was a wonderful day! I always cherish the memories that I have living in Ireland. My "private beach" which was not only rocky but also sandy. I kind of share your hobby of collecting rocks, only mine is smaller in size. I collected stones from different places and countries I have traveled. Thanks for your wonderful comment and for sharing this hub to others.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on June 17, 2012:

Ahh...what a wonderful day you spent with your beautiful dog Angus on that beach in Ireland. Those beaches appear to be really rocky as well as sandy. As a rock collector, I would find that fascinating. I have rocks in my garden from various places that I have traveled or lived. Even wrote a hub about having rocks in my head...oops, I mean bed. Ha! You really had that beach to yourself! Amazing! Votes up and SHARING so that others can momentarily experience the lapping waves, smell the algae and luxuriate in the peace of the moment...at least in cyberspace.

Hello Tracy, I am back again. Thank you for following me and as I said, on commenting my hub. Yes, it is fascinating observing other culture. I am a Filipina living here in Germany for many years, even longer than in my birth country.Asian culture and German culture are very different from each other that I am careful when I´m in a holiday in my home country not to be rude to my fellow asian. Thanks for visiting.
