Who was Douglas MacArthur?

Gen Douglas MacArthur came from a Military Family. His Father Arthur MacArthur was, also, in the military. His military service included the Civil war, Indian wars and Spanish American wars. Following in his father's footsteps, Douglas MacArthur entered West Point and graduated among the highest honors. Having served in World War 1, MacArthur rose to the rank of Major and had notable war acheivements such as Champagne-Marne Offensive, Battle of Saint Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

I shall return!

Gen. MacArthur heroic feats were unforgettable during World War II. Having been ordered by Washington to leave the Philippines and go to Australia, he made a promise. Upon arriving in Australia, He uttered the famous words--"I came through and I shall return!" Being a man of his word, he did just that. A few years later, he was at the forefront with his troops upon landing at Leyte in the Philippines freeing the land from Japanese occupation. That single act established his legacy forever in America.

Now that we established a good background on Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his military feats, let's turn our attention back to this historical landmark called the MacArthur Memorial. This museum is unique because it has many historical artifacts. We see his letters, paintings and life-like pictures. It is hard to describe in words, that is why, you owe it to yourself to give this place a visit. For me, the crowning touch was to see his car that was used for government business. It is amazing that it can be preserved after all these years. It is like taking a trip back in time.

The museum, also contains, MacArthur final resting place along with his wife. The general had lived a long and prosperous life filled with memories. During the Korean War, he had a major disagreement with President Truman and winded up getting fired. Many thought that President Truman made a great mistake. The Korean war resulted in a stalemate that has lasted until this day and many blamed Truman for that decision.

In one of the videos shown on the memorial, we see Gen.MacArthur made a memorial speech to Congress during his later years. He gave words of encouragement. The thing that stuck to me was the words-"Old soldiers never die, they just fade away!" These words ring true even to this day. Gen.Douglas MacArthur was a brilliant strategist and war hero and forever will be remembered by a grateful nation. Enclosed below is a virtual tour of the Museum. I encourage you to check it out and see what a great place MacArthur Memorial can be, especially if you are a war history fan.

Ah yes. Those who chooe to blame Truman for prolonging the division of Korea because of the Korean War ending as it did.

Can you imagine what this world would be today had McCarthur managed to do as he wished? As great a leader as he could be his ego played a major part in his downfall.
