Journey to Pune Onboard Karnataka Samparkranti Express

Trip to Pune from Bengaluru

I traveled to Pune in the month of August 2015 for a job interview at a multinational company. I got a call to attend the interview which also included reimbursement of air-conditioned 2 tier tickets in both up and down directions. I immediately accessed IRCTC's online web booking portal and booked my confirmed tickets onboard Karnataka Samparkranti Express in both directions. I prepared for the D-day and was very excited for this trip to Pune.

My train to Pune was 22685 Yeswanthpur Chandigarh Karnataka Samparkranti Express. The train connected to Chandigarh via Tumakuru, Davanagere, Hubballi, Dharwad, Belagavi, Miraj, Pune, Manmand, Bhusaval, Bhopal, Jhansi, and New Delhi. The train operated twice a week from Bengaluru and shared its rake with 12649 Yeshwanthpur- Hazarat Nizamuddin Karnataka Samparkranti Express via Kacheguda and 12629- Yeshwanthpur-Hazarat Nizamuddin Karnataka Samparkranti Express via Hubballi.

The D-day arrived and my train's departure from Yeswanthpur was at 1.45 pm in the afternoon. I got up early in the morning and started preparing for my journey to Pune. I left my home at around 11.30 am after having breakfast prepared by my mother. I hailed an auto-rickshaw to reach Yeswanthpur Railway station at around 12.15 pm. As soon as I reached the railway station, the platform was abuzz with continuous announcements of various train arrivals and departures, including the departure announcement of 22685 Yeswanthpur – Chandigarh Karnataka Samparkranti Express on platform number 6 and the arrival of 12726 Dharwad-Bengaluru Siddaganga Intercity Express on platform number 3.

Onboard Samparkranti Express

My ticket was confirmed in air-conditioned two-tier coach or A.C. 2 Tier coach with a lower berth number 45. I later exchanged the berth to move on to a vacant side lower berth number 48 to get a good view of the outside world. The rake was shunted onto the platform at around 1.15 pm, thirty minutes ahead of the scheduled departure. I grabbed a cup of coffee from the restaurant on the railway platform and settled down in my designated berth. The train left Yeswanthpur railway station bang on time at 1.45 pm from platform number 6. I immediately took out Sami Da's Indian Rail Atlas and started to do rail fanning by gazing at the window. A couple of pantry car vendors were selling hot soup. I grabbed a cup of tomato soup and relished the taste.

I did not feel the urge to have lunch as I had my breakfast very late in the morning. The pantry staff soon began to sell food with packed lunch on the train. The air-conditioned two-tier coach was moderately crowded with at least ten passengers occupying the designated berths. Soon after the train left, the travel ticket examiner verified my e-tickets along with the identity cards. I requested for an exchange of berth from lower berth to a vacant side lower berth and it was approved immediately.

Reaching Pune Railway Station

I was getting bored on the train and decided to read a book. I was hooked on the book reading for about an hour. Later the pantry car vendors were busy selling coffee/tea as evening beverages. I grabbed a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed it. Soon I thought of ordering online for dinner. I then ordered food from IRCTC's E-catering app and placed an order for a vegetarian dinner. The dinner was delivered to my seat at Davanagere at around 7 pm. As soon as we left Davanagere I decided to have my dinner. The dinner consisted of two chapatis, curry, rice, curds, and pickles. The dinner costed me around INR 150. I was awake until the arrival of the Hubballi railway station at around 9.45 pm. I then got down at Hubballi railway station to get some fresh air and chatted with a co-passenger. At the same time, the incoming rake of 12630 Hazarat Nizamuddin-Yeswanthpur Karnataka Samparkranti Express arrived at Hubballi junction at around 9.55 pm. Both the rakes of Karnataka Samparkranti Express were on the platform number 3 and 4 at Hubballi railway station.

Soon it was time to leave Hubballi at around 10 pm. The train left Hubballi bang on time and I decided to sleep as I had nothing else to do. I prepared my bed and slept at around 10.15 pm. The next day I woke up at around 6.45 am and freshened up. My destination at Pune was expected to arrive at around 8 am, which was just an hour away. I grabbed a cup of hot coffee from the pantry vendors. I then started to gaze at the window and enjoy the scenic views of agricultural fields on the way to Pune. It was time for breakfast and I ordered the same from the pantry vendors. The breakfast consisted of two bread pieces, an upma, vegetarian cutlet with coconut chutney. The breakfast was wholesome and I enjoyed it along with a cup of hot coffee. Soon my destination arrived at Pune and we were stabled onto platform number 6. The platform was abuzz with passengers heading towards New Delhi from Pune. The train had a brief halt over here due to the locomotive reversal towards the Daund section. As I stepped out of Pune railway station, there was a huge rush owing to the busy weekday crowd. I reached the auto-rickshaw stand to go to my hotel. I reached my hotel room within fifteen minutes. Thus my journey to Pune ended on a happy and pleasant note.
