The Greyhound bus is one of the most inexpensive methods of travel in North America as well as various other parts of the world.
Greyhound bus ticket prices can be 1/3 or even up to 1/2 the cost of a plane ticket, making Greyhound an attractive alternative to flying.
But what if you are one of those savvy travelers who wants to pay even less for your Greyhound bus tickets?
Well, I've got you covered. This article is all about ways to shave the price down on your next Greyhound bus trip.
1. Book Early
Did you know that you can get up to 50% off your Greyhound bus ticket by booking two or more weeks in advance?
I use this option all the time when I'm traveling on Greyhound. On more than one occasion just by booking early I've been able to travel cross country for next to nothing.
For example, I once traveled from Gainesville, Florida all the way to Bismarck, North Dakota for $99. That's a trip of almost 1,900 miles for less than one hundred bucks!
I love this discount because it isn't a one time promotion or seasonal savings. Greyhound offers advance booking deals 24/7, 365 days a year.
So if you are planning on taking a Greyhound bus trip, do yourself a favor and buy your ticket a couple weeks early.
2. Buy Your Ticket Online
Instead of going to the station to buy your next greyhound bus ticket, hop online and purchase your ticket from Greyhound's website.
Greyhound offers online ticket purchasing discounts and you will be able to save yourself some cash just by using a computer or your mobile phone.
The amount you can save depends on a number of factors like departure and destination cities, the route you take, departure time, etc. But the discount will be shown to you right on the screen when you buy your ticket so you will be able to see how much you are saving.
In the photo to the right you can see an example of the saving difference on a trip from Tallahasee, FL to Orlando FL. When you purchase the ticket online there is 40% to 50% saving versus buying the same ticket offline.
When you purchase your ticket online you have the option to request a 'Will Call' ticket pickup and get your ticket printed out for you at the station. This means that you can literally stand out in front of the station, purchase a discounted ticket on your phone with the Greyhound app, and then walk in the station and get your ticket. It will be the same ticket everyone else has but you will have paid less money for yours, just because you purchased it online. Sweet huh?
3. Travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays
The weekends are the busiest days on the Greyhound bus.
This makes sense because more people are off work, children are out of school, and most people get paid on Friday, which gives them the funds to travel.
During the middle of the week things slow down a bit for Greyhound Bus Lines. This is one reason I try to always travel during the middle of the week. Less people riding the bus means less crowded buses and bus stations, and that makes for an all around more pleasant journey.
However, there is another perk waiting to be snatched up by anyone smart enough to ride the bus mid-week. Greyhound offers discounts of up to 40% for travel on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. And you don't have to purchase the ticket in advance. You can buy your ticket that very same day and get the discount.
And here's another quick tip: Travel before 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to get the biggest savings.
4. Use Greyhound Promo Codes
Greyhound quite regularly issues promo codes that you can use when purchasing your ticket that will give you instant savings.
If you are a member of Greyhound's Road Rewards incentive program (which I highly recommend joining), you will get emails from time to time that feature the newest promo codes.
Or you can follow Greyhound Bus Lines on Twitter where they Tweet out promo codes on an almost daily basis.
Using a promo code is very easy: when purchasing your ticket online look under the 'Destination City' box and there will be a box marked 'Add Promo Code'. Just enter a current promo code in the field and the savings will automatically be taken off the price of your ticket at checkout.
Greyhound offers different savings on each promo code but I've found the average to be somewhere around 20%-25%. Getting 1/4 off your ticket price for just typing in like 5 letters works me!
I recommend always checking for promo codes before you book a ticket on the Greyhound bus.

5. Travel on Holidays
Here's a Greyhound bus tip that can save you money that very few people take advantage of, or even know about.
I actually discovered it by accident. I was looking to book a trip near the end of December and I noticed that the ticket prices were substantially lower on December 25th than they were on all the other surrounding days .
That's when I realized that Greyhound offers discounted prices if you travel on certain holidays. It's basically the same concept as the mid-week discounts: very few people travel on the actual holiday, most of them travel before or after, so Greyhound offers discounts to try and entice people to ride.
Now I know the prospect of spending your Christmas or Thanksgiving Day cooped up on a Greyhound bus may not fill you with holiday cheer. But it is a option to consider, especially if you are low on funds from holiday spending.
