Why Pattaya, Why Learn English?
My Thai girlfriend has reminded me dozens of times over the years of a simple fact.
"You think Thai girl come to Pattaya for LOVE? No, come for munneee!"
The same applies of course to wherever there is a bar scene in Thailand.
It is true of course. All dream that they may meet a rich falang who will care for them and their families. If they do then they are quite prepared to fall in love.
Thai girls have a remarkable learning capacity. Given the opportunity I reckon most would sail through university. I recollect a girl I knew who had just two English phrases. She took a Thai English phrase book and locked herself away for two days. She came out speaking English. I was amazed. Sadly she made a bit of a mess of her life after that.
There has always been a book under the bar with a collection of phrases that girls need to learn. Some of these are hand written and some long since gone out of print. The girls teach each other. Whereas it starts with phrases they quickly fill in the gaps. Besides the language of love often need not be spoken at all.
The latest arrival on the Bar Girl scene is a little gem of a book titled Get Rich Quick English For Bar Girls
Table of Contents
I am not going to include them all because they cover three pages and relate to the 190 pages which have two or more phrases on each.
- Private Time
- Our Body
- Excuses For Not Going With Men
- Feelings and Emotions
- Extra Money
- Meanings of the word F***
This is really a very comprehensive little book.
Random Selection of Phrases
The phrases in the book pull no punches. These are explicit and at times sexy. The girl is after all trying to seduce the man and get him to part with his cash, and part with as much as possible.
Such phrases. in a sexy Thai accent rolling of the silver tongue of a beautiful, or not so beautiful, bar girl will ensure that she is on the road to riches. Some of them become very rich indeed.
- Take a seat please
- How old are you?
- How many times have you been to Thailand?
- Do you have girlfriend
- Nice, gentle and kind
- Where are you staying?
- I enjoy talking with you
- I'm lonely
- I have a broken heart
- I'm crazy about you
- I really love you
You get the drift. Plenty of filler phrases not included but we will leap on a bit.
- I want to be with you
- I will never cheat on you
- I've never met a man like you
- I like to have fun
- Please take out
- You have to pay the bar
- Do you want short time or overnight?
It then starts to get intimate
- Your body is so soft
- I never went with a foreigner before
- Are you feeling horny?
- Would you like to take a shower?
The chances are it will not get any more intimate so it is best you do.
- You've got a big one
The writer of the book knows exactly what Mr. Average wants to hear.
- What position do you like
I will stop with the intimate stuff at this point and move onto the next stage.
- I don't love you anymore
- You lied to me
- Can you send me some money?
- My mother is sick
- My father is in hospital
- I need to pay for my brother's school books
It is not my intention to slag off or demean Bar Girls. I love their chat and banter. I love them. They are no different to any other person on the planet though in that they need money. Sadly the means to earn enough to support aged parents, brothers, sisters and their families cannot be found by sewing shirts in a Bangkok back street.
They do fall in love of course but family comes first. Recognise that indisputable fact and you will have a loyal and devoted partner you can be proud of.
The get rich quick book is also available in Russian language. There is also one especially for massage therapists (nice and naughty)

Thanks Ashley....if you read a few more of my bar scene related hubs you will see that much of what you said I am in total agreement with.
You should start hubbing. There is money to be made. I make something every day.

Thanks Rachael. Yes a phrasebook would be of help to most.
I make a distinction between 'sex slaves' and others who work in the sex industry. I have never met a sex slave nor know of any ( I would report it). I also have never met a Bar girl who was exploited....quite the opposite.
Rachael Lefler from Illinois on May 26, 2011:
I want a phrasebook like that for every language, lol! When I travel I always like a nice hookup with some local flavor! But I feel bad for those girls and others who are exploited by sex tourism in a really ugly way.

Mrvoodoo - I have seen three books over the years not including the hand written ones. You are right though the hospital and sick buffalo are in this one. Glad you can appreciate it.
Mrvoodoo from ? on November 02, 2010:
LOL, I always suspected that there must be a book like this one, or some kind of special bar girl school. "My father is in the hospital... My cow is very sick..." hahs.
Love it, thanks for sharing.

Glassy - Many of the younger girls are exactly as you say. I have met a number who turned down offers of marriage and a settled secure life because they would miss Bar life. Others I know who did marry and moved away to Europe and Australia but the pull was too strong. They return to the Bar again.
Glassy from Aus on October 23, 2010:
I agree with you Peter, most of the bar girls that Ive met, love what they do. They get all the attention they want from guys walking past their bars and they get to drink and be with their friends every night. Oh and they certainly don't have to work very hard, dance on top of a bar for 20 mins, pour a drink or 2, play connect 4 for for an hour. And yes they are all attached to their homelands in the north and would prefer to be their anytime.

Hello, hello - I agree that it is a crime but at the same time it isn't. If you were to meet with these girls I would say a good 80% actually enjoy the life and what they are doing. It is that other 20% my heart bleeds for. I know girls from both sides of the fence. I do believe that 100% prefer it to cutting or planting rice though. I/We are so lucky never to be in such a position to have to make the choice.
Hello, hello, from London, UK on October 23, 2010:
Gosh, they are so beautiful and it is crime they have to do this.
