Greece is an international destination for summer holidays. Located on the southern eastern part of Europe, is a place visited by millions of tourist every year. Even though Greece went through some really difficult financial challenges, the people have grown past their problems at high degree and now start rebuilding what they lost. Despite these problems Greece never stopped being a place worth visiting and a place to have the best time of your life.

Here are 5 reasons why you should too visit Greece for your summer holidays:

1) The sea

Greece has thousands of islands, of all shapes and sizes. Even the mainland, the sea is never too far to reach. Some of the most known islands tourists choose to visit are, Santorini with the breathtaking calntera, where you will have the chance to witness a sunset unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The beaches of Santorini are also special, the Red Beach is a unique beach with red and black pebbles caused by the volcanic activity and hot waters, or if you enjoy the big waves you can visit Vourvoulos, where the strong winds produce massive waves.

Another famous Greek island with beautiful beaches is Mykonos, known to everyone as the center you lifestyle holidays, Mykonos is so much more than the famous clubs and restaurants. Beaches such super paradise and platis gialos, can offer a full experience of the Greek summer.

Except the world famous islands there thousands of little and less known islands to visit. Islands for the whole family like Poros island, located in the Saronic Gulf, is a place where the whole family can relax and spend some quality time together.

Paxi is another example of family Friendly Island. Located in the Ionian sea, just south of Kerkyra can offer you some memorable times for you and your family.

2) The sun

Even though it can get really hot in Greece, the sun is something you can always enjoy visiting Greece. Sunlight is always present here with almost 300 days of sun every year. You can enjoy the Greek sun in the shadow of a beach umbrella or under a tree in one the countless Greek beaches. Be careful though, always wear sun cream for protection. The sun is friendly only when you are protected.

3) Hospitality

The people of Greece have always been people with a great sense of hospitality. You will see a smiley face everywhere you look. Greek people will always welcome you into their houses and their shops, they will always offer you something to drink or some delicious Greek treat. Rooted to their ancient history hospitality has always been a trait of the Greeks. Beware of Crete though, people there are much more hospitable and will always treat you with raki wherever you go and boy that stuff is strong.

4) The Food

The Greek cuisine has been known to the rest of the world for many years now, but lately it has manage to be one the world’s most tasteful cuisine. Visiting Greece you are going to have millions of options of places you can go to enjoy Greek traditional food. Don’t forget to try moussaka, a famous Greek food with eggplant, potato, minced meat and whipping cream. Tzatziki is a world renowned appetizer, made from yogurt, cucumber, garlic and pepper. Last but not least the souvlaki. If you visit Greece and don’t eat souvlaki your trip cannot be considered fulfilled. Souvlaki comes in many different editions and you can eat it in many different ways, with many different meats and ingredients.

5) The monuments

With a history over 3.000 years old, Greece’s ancient culture is all around you. There is no place you can visit that you can’t find an ancient monument to visit. Starting with the most famous of them all Acropolis. Acropolis was built on the 5th century b.c. and is still standing tall, as a reminder of human’s achievements. The ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus, just below Acropolis, when you attend to many different kind of shows. But it’s not only in Athens that you can visit monuments with great historic significance. The ancient stadium of Olympia and the sanctuary of Zeus in Peloponnese. The tomb of Philippos in Vergina, that is the tomb of Alexander’s the Great father’s. The archeological site of Delphi, where the great oracle Pythia gave her famous and mysterious statements. The historical sites are countless in Greece and it takes more than one trip to see just a handful of them

We were in Greece years ago and remembered the trip so well. We went on a classical tour as we are history majors and enjoyed it so much.
