Family Road Trip to Sariska National Park

• Life becomes monotonous and boring, if we keep on doing the same thing everyday. It’s good to take a break from the regular routine and spend some quality time with your loved ones, family and friends.
• This is important to rejuvenate and recharge yourself, both physically and mentally.
• Travelling to a place, full of natural beauty, is perhaps the best option, in my opinion.
• Sometimes, there may be issues, such as not getting long leave from your workplace etc. But, managing a weekend trip should not be difficult for anyone.
• So, we decided to have a family weekend trip, to have fun, to enjoy togetherness and to take a break from the regular routine life.
• While exploring through the Google search, Sariska National Park, was found to be the best suitable option, with the available time we had.
• The wildlife and especially, the Tiger Reserve, was of course the greatest and unanimous attraction.
• This is a popular destination for the wildlife enthusiasts and the wildlife photographers. In addition to being a Tiger Reserve, this is a bird sanctuary as well.

How to reach the Sariska National Park and where to stay?

• The distance from New Delhi to the Sariska National Park is 202 k.m.
• By the road, it takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes via National Highway 48. If you plan to travel by road, it’s good to follow the GPS maps on your mobile phones.
• Sariska can also be reached by air or by train. Though these two modes of travel will take you to the nearest railway station and the nearest airport, and not up to the Sariska National Park. From there, you may have to hire a taxi/ cab.
• When the weather is pleasant, the spirits are high, then the road trips along with the family, are the most enjoyable ones.
• There are many options to stay there. But prior booking and reservations are advisable, to avoid inconvenience.
• Remember, that the National Parks are far away from the cities. Therefore, you must go fully equipped, with what you may need there.

We had prior bookings in a luxury resort, with widespread greenery, cottages, dining halls, swimming pool, lush green lawns, with tall trees etc.

Follow the rules of The National Park:

1. It’s important to go through the rules and regulations, to be followed at The National Park.
2. These are vast and widespread forest areas, meant for the wild animals, wild birds, water animals and others, which are either endangered or protected.
3. The Water bodies are either available naturally or created there, for the animals and birds to drink water or cool themselves, when the heat is unbearable.
4. They move freely there and we, the human beings are the visitors at their abode. We shouldn’t do any act, which disturbs them or their habitat.
5. It’s not wise to carry lot of baggage, while we enter the National Park. In particular, we should not make noise, keep mobile phones on silent mode, avoid eating, while inside the forest.
6. The Government has set strict rules and laws, which must be followed, when you enter a National Park. Failure to follow those rules and laws may lead to fine or even jail.

How to enter The Sariska National Park Safari?

• The Sariska National Park is spread over dense forest area, covering more than eight hundred square kilometres.
• It has flora, fauna, lakes, water bodies and is inhabited by many carnivorous and herbivores animals, birds and water animals.

• The timings of the Safari are fixed by the management, once in the morning and the other in the evening. The timings are different in the Summer and the Winter season. Make sure to be informed about the timings before you plan your trip. The National Park remains closed during the monsoon season for the general public.
• You have to purchase a ticket for entry. There are many open jeep safaris available and as you buy the tickets, you will be guided by the management, which one to board. The drivers and the guides are trained employees of the forest department and private vehicles are not allowed inside. As such, we can’t go in our own car there.
• Remember, these are forest areas and we have no idea or experience of dealing with eventualities, if something like that happens.

The exciting and adventurous Safari experience

The tiger or leopard spotting is the most exciting experience, if you are lucky.

But besides that, moving in an open Safari, with the rich flora and fauna, the dense, widespread forest, the wild animals and birds moving around by your side, is an enriching experience as well.

We were fortunate to spot some beautiful deer, nilgai, jungle cats, jackals, monkeys, in groups, wild boars, crocodiles, some strange looking creatures, birds, aquatic birds and animals and many more.

It‘s a Bird sanctuary as well and we saw many beautiful birds of different colours, shapes and sizes, the names of which are not known to me.

It was interesting to look at them, moving quietly, sometimes staring at us, with curiosity.

The beautiful Peacocks were all around us, in groups or in pairs and it was such a beautiful sight indeed.

To spot the Tigers, the guides look for their pug marks, near the water bodies, in and around the bushes or small caves, or track them through an instrument called the tiger tracker. It’s a kind of GPS system, the other instrument is fitted, somewhere on the body of the tigers.

To Conclude:

• Roaming in the dense forest in the open jeep Safari was an extremely exciting experience. I liked that all trained employees in uniform, whether drivers or guides make it a safe and enjoyable experience for the visitors of the forest areas.
• Otherwise, the forest is so vast and dense, with bumpy and kachha earthen roads, that it is difficult to navigate on our own.
• Another interesting information, as told by the guides there, that it’s only 20 percent of the forest, that the general public is allowed to move about. Nearly 80 percent of the forest is prohibited area. These areas are even more denser and non-motorable, with many wild animals and birds.
• The forest department of the Government of India maintains these areas very well and according to the set rules and laws of the land.

Yes, it’s very important to move through the National Park, with the trained guides, in the special jeep safaris. They are so familiar with the routes of the dense forests, and they know, when and from where the wild animals, may emerge.

A lot has been done to preserve and protect the wildlife, but the efforts must continue, not only by the governments, but by the general public too.

Besides Sariska, the Ranthambore National Park has good population of the Tigers. Then there is the Kanha, the Jim Corbett and many other National Parks.

Chitrangada, what a special place. Sariska National Park I would definitely visit if I were to get to India, which is a possibility over the next two or three years. Great photos and an interesting write up. With so much pressure on the tiger these days it is good to know that they have a space in which to be wild. India has a huge responsibility over the next few decades to preserve species like the iconic tiger, such a beautiful big cat. Let's hope India can succeed.
