The Magic of Abidjan: My Experience Traveling to Ivory Coast

I was lucky enough to have been able to go on vacation in January to one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in West Africa, Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Here’s the story of my trip, from arrival to departure, with pictures and stories about my stay in the city that welcomed me with open arms and I hope will welcome you too if you ever get the chance to visit it!

Where is Abidjan?

Abidjan is the economic capital of Ivory Coast and is located on the south coast of the country. The city is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 4 million people. Despite its large size, Abidjan has a laid-back atmosphere and is known for its friendly locals. I had the opportunity to visit Abidjan last year and was absolutely blown away by its beauty.

Arrival to Abidjan

I arrived in Abidjan, the formal capital of Ivory Coast, in the early evening. The city was bustling with activity and the air was thick with humidity. I made my way to my hotel, which was located in the center of the city. After check-in, I went for a walk to explore my surroundings.

Culture and Cuisine

When I travel, I love to immerse myself in the local culture and cuisine. Ivory Coast was no exception. The food was absolutely amazing—a delicious mix of African, French, and Middle Eastern influences. I was also blown away by the people. They were so warm and welcoming, and I felt like I really got to experience the true culture of the country. Overall, it was an incredible trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly unique travel experience.

Accommodation

I stayed in a friend's house in the Plateau district of Abidjan. This was my first time visiting Ivory Coast, and I was excited to explore the city. The Plateau is the central business district of Abidjan and is home to many of the city's tallest buildings. It was great to be able to walk around and see all the sights.

I also got to visit a few other places outside of Abidjan. I went to Grand-Bassam, which is a beach town about an hour away from the city. It was beautiful there and I loved being able to relax on the beach and swim in the ocean. I also visited Yamoussoukro, which is the capital of Ivory Coast.

Overall, I loved my trip and would definitely recommend visiting Ivory Coast. The people were very friendly and I was able to experience so much in a short time. If you get a chance, you should definitely consider traveling here

Souvenirs

When I think of my trip to Abidjan, the first thing that comes to mind are the amazing souvenirs I was able to find. From hand-crafted wood carvings to beautiful paintings, there was no shortage of things to take home with me. I was also able to find some unique jewelry and even a few traditional items like masks and statues. I absolutely loved everything about this city and can't wait to go back!

There were plenty of gift shops and souvenir stores lining each street, but if you’re looking for something really unique, there are a few places that sell original art. I was able to find some incredible hand-painted masks as well as some pottery, paintings and even custom items made from wood or metal. These are all very high quality items and great souvenirs. I absolutely loved my trip here and can't wait to go back! If you're planning a trip here soon, make sure you take some time to shop! You won ‘t regret It.

Moving Around

There are a few ways to get around in Abidjan, the most popular being by car or motorcycle. You can also take a bus, which is usually more affordable than other options. However, taxis are everywhere and are often the most convenient way to get around. Be sure to negotiate your fare before getting in, as prices can vary depending on the time of day and distance traveled.

Another great way to get around is by taxi. When traveling in a taxi, be sure you agree on a price before you start your journey, as taxis can differ widely in price and quality. To help ensure your safety, get into a radio-dispatched taxi and make sure it’s properly registered with local authorities. Also note that many vehicles are now fitted with meters to further ensure fair pricing. Most trips within Abidjan will cost you around XOF5000 (USD1), but again these prices can fluctuate so be sure to negotiate with your driver beforehand! And as a general rule—though it might seem obvious—never share a taxi or motorcycle ride with anyone other than an individual you trust

Conclusion

I was absolutely mesmerized by my experience in Abidjan. The city is bustling and full of life, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the food is absolutely incredible. I would highly recommend anyone who has the opportunity to travel to Ivory Coast, and specifically Abidjan, to do so without hesitation. You will not be disappointed!
