Suriname is rising as a holiday destination. This nation is located in the northern part of South America and, although it’s not an island, it is part of the Caribbean. Suriname is mainly known for its beautiful tropical rainforest. Many tourists are amazed by the colorful flowers, the appealing tropical fruits, a variety of delicious diverse cuisines, the beautiful birds, and the amazing waterfalls that are a feast for the senses. Nowadays Suriname also has attractive man-made sandy beaches where you can swim and sunbathe. The reasons why Suriname is becoming a favorite holiday destination is not only the hospitable people, clean water and high quality food, but foremost that this country is very cheap for tourists in comparison to the Caribbean islands.
Suriname represents one of the largest stretches of undeveloped unspoiled rainforest in the world. It’s South America’s smallest country and it is packed with cultural diversities. This nation was once a Dutch colony. The capital of Suriname is Paramaribo, its only big city. The inhabitants are descendants of people who were enslaved or pressed to work on Dutch plantations; native Americans, Africans, Indians, Javanese and Chinese people. Interesting is that these Surinamese have all kept their own languages and cultures.
The Reasons why Suriname is Rising as a Holiday Destination
The Surinamese are very warm and friendly people. This multicultural nation offers diverse cuisines, ranging from African creole kitchens to Indian, Javanese and Chinese culinary. The criminality is very low in comparison to other nations. It’s all right to drink from the tab, because the waters are fresh and clean. The food is of a very high organic quality. They don’t inject their livestock with hormones and use a minimal on pesticides for their crops. And if these reasons aren’t enough to persuade the average tourist, the price tags will. The Surinamese exchange rate is very favorable for Americans and Europeans. This makes Suriname the cheapest holiday destination in comparison to the Caribbean islands, but still one can be ensured of the high quality in food, drink, safety and interior Amazon rainforest tours.
Surinamese Holiday Resorts
Suriname has many holiday resorts just outside of the city or far away in the interior. Some people rather have a leisure full vacation. These tourists will most likely choose a resort not to far from the city, where they can mostly relax and enjoy nature. The more adventurous tourists take a liking to the resorts deeper in the Suriname rainforest, where they can have a mild jungle experience and do some more adventurous activities. Suriname has a lot of holiday resorts. Some of the most popular ones are the following;
About half an hour's drive from the capital, Paramaribo, lies White beach. This popular resort has an artificial sandy beach on the Suriname River. You can rent houses and/or tents and there is also a restaurant on site. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can also rent canoes and watercraft. White beach is suitable for people who want to spend their holidays a little cheap and not too far outside the city.
Overbridge river resort
Overbridge river resort is about an hour and a half drive from Paramaribo and has a number of similarities with White beach. This resort also has an artificial beach and is also located on the Suriname River. There are also tents, cottages and a restaurant here. This place lies a little deeper in the jungle, which is also noticeable by the pure and cool air and the fresh water. The fauna and the flora that express the beauty of the tropical forest.
Berg en Dal is Dutch for mountain and valley. Bergendal is located at a distance of 85 kilometers from Paramaribo. It is accessible via the road, but also via the river. There are beautiful huts, houses and restaurants to accommodate tourists. The tree houses that are set on high wooden beams against the mountain slopes are beautiful. Bergendal is anything but primitive. The visitors are provided with air-conditioned rooms, hot and cold water, and so on. The program offers the opportunity to go for walks in the forest, kayaking, flying the cable car between the tree tops and over the river, and so much more.
New Babunhol River resort
Babunhol is also located on the Suriname river, but it is deeper inland. The distance from Paramaribo to this resort takes approximately three hours. The vegetation, the river and the surrounding villages give a real feeling of being 'in the forest'. Here too everything is available to accommodate tourists; cottages, tents, cooking huts, etcetera. Kayaking, swimming, river fishing, and forest walks are among the attractions. The natural beauty and the friendly residents make this place worth a visit.
Brownsberg is a nature park in the interior of Suriname, in the Brokopondo district. Brownsberg is a 500-meter-high mountain with a plateau that can be reached by car. There are a number of guest buildings on this plateau and the plateau offers a breathtaking view of the Brokopondo reservoir. Due to the height of the mountain it is cold and foggy in the evening and morning hours. The howler monkeys show themselves mainly in the early morning and the colorful birds and bright blue butterflies are also worth the visit. A number of hiking routes have been mapped out that run downhill to various waterfalls and creeks. Brownsberg is very popular and is frequently visited by tourists and foreign scientists who conduct research into the various medicinal plants in the area.
Raleigh falls is a nature reserve. The reserve is internationally known for the large variety of monkeys and the 400 bird species, living in that area. The beautiful waterfalls and the Voltzberg, a mountain reaching 240 meters above the tree tops, are prominent. Spending the night in a rustic accommodation midst big trees and unspoiled flora and fauna is an once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Suriname has many more holiday resorts, such as the well-known Cola Creek, Blaka watra, Marinalex, Raleigh Falls, and so on. They are all worth a visit. The country has been in social peace during the last decades, which has caused tourism to get back on track. As mentioned before Surinamese are hospitable and friendly, so a visit to this country often makes a positive and lasting impression on tourists.
