What Is Glacier?

A glacier is a large mass of ice that moves slowly over land. Glaciers form when snow remains in one location for a long period enough to transform into ice. Their ability to flow makes them unique. That's why glaciers are called slowly moving river of ice.

With more than 7,000, Pakistan not just has a part of the most significant snow-covered mountains in the world, yet it also has a part of the greatest and most impressive glaciers in the world. Nearly all these glaciers are situated in the northern regions of Pakistan. Here are the 5 most wonderful glaciers in Pakistan that you definitely need to visit.

1. Siachen Glacier

Siachen Glacier, one of the world's longest glacier in the Karakorum and the second longest in the world's non-polar areas is located in the eastern Karakorum range in the Himalaya Mountains along the questioned India-Pakistan Interim border at around 35.5°N 77.0°E. It varies from a height of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above the sea level.

2. Baltoro Glacier

The Baltoro Glacier at 63 km (39 miles) in length, is one of the longest non-polar glacier in the world. It is located in the Shigar district Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. This Glacier route leads to the frightening K2 the second-highest peak in the world. While it's hard to reach this frozen mountain, you will be awarded both mentally and physically.

3. Biafo Gyang Glacier

The Biafo Glacier is 63 kms long and the third greatest land glacier in the whole world. It is located in the Karakorum Mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan which meets the 49 km (30 mi) long Hispar Glacier at a height of 5,128 m (16,824 ft) at Hispar La (pass) to make the world's longest glacial system outside the polar region. Two ancient mountain kingdoms Nagar, in the west with Baltistan in the east are connected by this highway of ice. The traverse uses 51 of the Biafo Glacier's 63 km and all of the Hispar Glacier to form a 100 km (62 mi) glacial route.

4. Godwin-Austen Glacier

Godwin-Austen Glacier is in the Karakorum Range near the border of Pakistan and China and is close to K2 (the second highest peak in the world) in Gilgit-Baltistan Pakistan. Its joining with the Baltoro Glacier is called Concordia and is a popular journeying destination as it gives sight of four of the five eight-thousanders in the region. It gets its name from Henry Haver Sham Godwin Austen who was an early explorer of this region.

5. Batura Glacier

Batura Glacier is a 57 km (35 miles) long and it is the world's seventh longest non-polar glacier and Pakistan's fourth longest glacier. It lies in the Gojal region of Gilgit-Baltistan. The out and back climb along it's route gives fantastic views of 7000 meters peaks. The lower part can be described as a grey sea of rocks, surrounded by a several summer villages and pastures with herds of sheeps, goats, cows and beautiful yaks. Where juniper trees and rises are common.
