Control Panel is Part of the Graphical User Interface

The control panel is part of the Microsoft Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI) that enables a user to modify the computer settings.

There are some important settings found under the control panel that is important to know of. This tutorial is based on Windows XP operating system for those who are still using it.

For those using advanced Operating Systems, they might learn a thing or two they skipped while using Windows XP.

Setting the Theme of Your Computer

This option allows you to choose a theme for your computer where you can personalize your computer.

This is by using a predefined background and group of sounds, icons, and other elements.

To change your computers’ theme click on start, control panel, and then select change the computer’s theme. The display property dialogue opens.

Under the theme drop-down box, you will be able to select among the themes that you want to use. You can practice by using several themes available.

Setting the Desktop Background

The desktop background is the picture or image that appears on your desktop the moment you power on your computer.

It is used to decorate your computer's working space otherwise known as the desktop. You can be able to change your background image by going to the control panel.

This is achieved by clicking on start, control panel, and click on appearance and themes.

Then under the pick a task, click on change the desktop background. The display dialogue box opens where again you will be able to select any background you want.

Remember to scroll to see more backgrounds that you can use.

Setting the Screen Saver on Windows XP

The screen saver is a moving image or text that appears on your screen when your computer is idle.

It is used to protect your monitor from screen burn especially the old CRT types. To set or change your screen saver, do the following.

Click on start, control panel, and then click on appearance and themes. Under the 'pick a task option', select choose a screen saver. The display properties window appears.

Down after the preview area, open the drop-down button and select the screen saver you want. After selecting the screen saver, click on the preview to see your screen saver.

To disrupt it, just move your mouse. To set it as your screen saver, click on apply and then okay.

We have said that the screen saver appears after your computer has been idle for some time. So you can set this idle state time on where it is written wait.

You can also use the screen saver to lock your computer. This is done by clicking on the button, 'on resume, password protect'. In this instance, you will be required to supply a password for the computer to open.

Setting a Customized Text Screen Saver

You can set a customized text screen saver. This can be done by using the screen saver type called 3D text or Marquee.

Just select 3D Text and then next to it click on settings. Under the 3D Text settings, type your custom text, choose a font, motion type, resolution, size and rotation speed.

Then click okay and preview your 3D text screen saver. For Marquee, select the Marquee screen saver.

Click on settings and start changing properties like position, background colour, type your customized text, and also change the speed.

Then click format text to change the font, font style, size, effects, and colour. Then click okay, and okay again before clicking on the preview option.

NOTE: You can use a marquee screen saver to market (simple marketing) your business by setting whatever you want your clients to see whenever the computer is not in use.

Did you know that you can create a screen saver showing your pictures? This is a cool feature that you can use to display your photos.

To do this, select my pictures slideshow. Click on settings to define where your pictures are saved, go to where it is written use pictures in this folder.

The change screen resolution option allows us to make icons, text, and other items appear larger or smaller on the screen.

This can be achieved by clicking on start, control panel, appearance and themes and then select change the screen resolution.

Then on the display properties, move the screen resolution spinner button to less or more screen resolution. The higher the resolution, the smaller your text and icons will appear. And they will also appear more clear or sharp.

Warning: - Some monitors may not be able to display when you set a very high resolution.

To be on the safe side, once you select the screen resolution you want, click on apply and wait. If the screen resolution is usable, then click on okay. If it is not usable, the computer will safely revert to the previous one.
