Uninstall Zune -- How to Completely Uninstall Zune Software & Remove it from Your PC

Can't Uninstall Zune? Cannot Remove it using Add/Remove? Here's What to Do...

Can't uninstall Zune completely from your computer?

Are you getting totally frustrated because you feel like you've tried everything and you can't completely uninstall Zune software using the standard Windows Add or Remove Programs?

Discover below all my frustrations & time wasting efforts in trying to uninstall this stupid software from my PC and how I finally managed to remove it, permanently...

Completely Uninstalling Zune Software

When you try to uninstall Zune software using your Windows ADD/REMOVE option, you might be getting the following error message:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."

"Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Zune.msi' in the box below".

When you click OK ==> the following error message appears:

"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it".

What I found in my case was that Windows "Add/Remove Programs" just cannot uninstall Zune. If you want to delete Zune permanently and restore your PC as if Zune software was never installed on your computer, this is the tool I used to uninstall Zune completely.

Below is everything else I've tried to get rid of it (after spending hours on the internet Googling for a solution), but it didn't work for me. It might for you...

Unzoone to Uninstall & Remove Zune?

Completely uninstalling Zune means completely removing everything that is associated with the software, including what's left behind in your registry, driver info, unneeded registry keys & remnants that will later affect your PC speed & performance if not deleted.

So I found out that some guy invented this software called "Unzoone" to do this.

UnZoone is a piece of software that will remove the Zune software and all the bugs that come with it & are left behind on your PC. It apparently deletes everything from registry entries to those DLL files that get leftover.

My experience with Unzoone wasn't good at all. It simply didn't work!

It seems that while it worked for the old Zune software - it is not compatible with the new Zune software. Other people I notice in chat forums complain that when they tried to re-install Zune afterwards it didn't recognize the Zune software.

(Useless) Microsoft Solution:

So what is Microsoft's answer to this problem?

It's their software so I figured hey, they should provide some useful removal instructions to their users - right? Well, here's what they had to say:

To remove the Zune software from the computer, follow these steps.

Step 1: Make sure that the Zune device is not connected to the computer.

Scroll to Continue

Step 2: Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.

Step 3: In the Add or Remove Programs window, click Zune, and then click Remove.

Step 4: Click Yes to remove the Zune software.

Step 5: If any of the following software appears in the Add or Remove Programs window, remove that software from the computer:

o Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0

o Windows Driver Package - Microsoft WPD

o Windows Media Format 11 SDK

o Windows Portable Devices

Ok, so I manually deleted the above thinking I'd be fine. Unfortunately, my computer still thought it was there!!

So finally after hours of going nuts and total frustration with trying to get this piece of c*ap off my computer, I found this tool - Perfect Uninstaller. It worked for me and hopefully it will work for you too.

What is Perfect Uninstaller?

Basically, it's a tool that will uninstall & remove any unneeded software on your PC. It removes everything that Add/Remove Program can't.

Most importantly, it clears your registry entries and drivers which is what I really needed when I was trying to remove the Zune software. Basically, software that is not uninstalled properly leaves crap & files over in your registry which slows down your computer and causes computer errors.

Perfect Uninstaller protects your PC from corrupted registry errors & improves your PC performance and speed.

What is Zune software?

Zune is basically Microsoft's answer to the iPod by Apple. Zune includes portable media players, Zune Software that includes Zune Marketplace with online music, video and podcast stores.

Many people consider Zune a complete flop (me included) when compared to iPod, but opinions vary.

On September 8 2008, Microsoft announced the Zune 3.0 update, which includes the ability to tag for purchase songs heard on FM radio, channels which can be customized to deliver suggested songs for the user, the ability to purchase songs from the Zune device via the Zune Marketplace, as well as two sample games, Hexic and Texas Hold'em.

Even more recently, it seems that Microsoft wants to turn Zune from a music player like iPod into a new smart phone from the company. (like the iPhone).

Ever the leader in innovation (burst out laughing), Microsoft wants to combine Zune and technology from its purchase of Danger Inc., the company that brought us the Sidekick flip phone available on T-Mobile, to create an iPhone wannabe.

Uninstall Zune Software: Your Feedback

I noticed this sentence "What I found in my case was that Windows "Add/Remove Programs" just cannot uninstall Zune.", which I have done as well, so now my question is, where do I find the Zune file for me to uninstall with the Perfect Uninstaller, when I can't find it within the list of Perfect Uninstaller?

Perfect Uninstaller has saved my butt more than once! The only thing more ridiculous than needing to uninstall the Zune software so many times is how quickly this program clears it out.

anonymous on January 05, 2012:

Even after running UnZoone (admittedly designed for an older version of Zune) I couldn't update or uninstall Zune because of a missing installer file (the original .msi file). This file apparently had been in a folder named with a lot of random numbers and letters. I copied these characters and searched for them in the registry. There were three keys in there with this folder name, which I deleted (the whole key in each case). Problem solved. This might not work by itself (remember I ran UnZoone first), but I have read that removing all registry keys that have "Zune" in them will also permit reinstallation.

Really shocked but that Uninstaller program really works, you have to pay, but i thought it was worth it, having a lot of computer troubles in deleting files and its searches your whole database to include regristy, cool stuff

Unzoone worked perfectly for me. Thank God Zune is finally gone!

anonymous on September 16, 2011:

@anonymous: Yes, thank you this worked on my computer, however I had to right click properties, click security tab and then I clicked full control. I then went to uninstall zune and it asked if I was sure I wanted to uninstall it and after clicking yes it uninstalled zune and then a message said that Zune was deleted from my computer. Thank you so much.

I noticed that in XP anyway the installation appeared to finish no problem... no errors but there were still settings in the registry that prevented reinstalling it which is what I wanted to do in my case. In particular there was legacy devices that you just couldn't delete. You have to chage the security and take ownership of the registry folder and then you can delete these. Once you have deleted every reference to Zune in the registry and deleted any folders related to zune on your hard drive then it will install just like new. You might have to set your folder view to show hidden and system files to make sure you get rid of all the folders. If you are reinstalling you might want to leave the zune folders in your music and pictures folder because they will have your playlists and photo stuff

After windows telling me that it "was" uninstalled, countless times, it was still there. This solved it for me; I went into program files and scrolled to the bottom and right clicked zune, then went into the security tab and gave myself "full control" of the file and its contents, which I should have had in the first place, then clicked apply, and deleted the folder. Went back into add/remove programs and click uninstall on zune, it said something like files from this program have been deleted would you like to remove it from this list? I clicked yes, went to my desktop and deleted the shortcut and bam I was done with zune. I'm getting so fed up with microsoft and windows I have decided to go mac.

i just got a zune and downloaded the software, after a lot of trial and error i decided i should reinstall the zune software so i went to add/remove and my computer told me some bullcrap and then i tried everything to get rid of it, i manually hunted down zune files and deleted them but i couldn't reinstall because my computer thought it was still there, i did what Microsoft suggested, still no beans, i found this and hopefully it works, i seriously think i should have gotten an ipod

I installed some fx trading software a while back and couldn't get it off. I tried this Uninstaller and it worked perfectly for me. Thanks for the tip. L.W.

I tried the Perfect Uninstaller... on my Vista x64 system.. and guess what it doesn't show up in the list. I can uninstall it normally with windows but it leaves shit behind obviously... and currently the Zune software doesn't work as it does not add anything to my collection... therefore I have a zune that I cannot use because I can only transfer files to the zune through the Zune software. Yes I am angry!

I live in Norway and the Zune online repare is not accessible outise the US... hence I have no way of contacting Zune support either!

Great isn't it!
