As a freelancer, I have been on both the seller and buyer side of Fiverr for several years. If you're not too familiar with Fiver and are wondering if it's a legitimate website to market yourself or to hire freelance workers, I will share my personal experience in this article.
What Exactly is Fiverr and How Does It Work?
Fiverr has what is called gigs also known as micro-jobs. These gigs start at $5 per service. This means that the base price of any service on Fiverr starts at $5. In an ever-growing "gig" economy, freelance work is more commonplace. In a digital world, Fiverr is just that. It's a global online marketplace for freelance digital products and services. It matches sellers to buyers looking for on-demand assistance in a variety of different skill sets.
Fiverr works by allowing buyers to pay in advance for products and/or services in areas such as the following:
- Digital marketing
- Graphic design
- Language translation services
- Programming and technology
- Video creation
- Writing/Transcription services
As a buyer, there are some things I would highly recommend before ordering a gig.
- Contact the seller prior to placing an order. I've had orders that have been delayed due to Internet connectivity issues or power outages in other countries. Remember, this is a global marketplace.
- Look at the seller's reviews. Reviews can be an important indicator to determine whether or not to order the gig.
- Examine the seller's profile. How long have they been a seller on Fiverr? Be sure to look at the sellers rankings. Top-rated sellers will have an identifier under their name that will say, Level 1 or Level 2 Seller or Top Rated Seller.
Check the sellers average response time. Does the seller respond within a timely manner. Will you hear back with minutes or a few hours or more? If you need a response relatively quickly, this is important to consider. With Fiverr's filter option, you can select sellers who are online.
As mentioned previously, Fiver gigs start at $5. Do not be confused by the name; not every gig sells for $5. That's just the starting point. Depending on the type of service and the work involved, the price may increase. There's also room for negotiation on the price if the seller is willing. It's best practice to contact the buyer prior to purchasing a gig.
Looking To Sell on Fiverr?
For those who have services to offer, Fiverr is a platform that allows you to showcase your talents and earn money in the process. Although Fiverr generates it's own traffic, you want to make sure you're promoting yourself through other outlets. Fiverr is not a set it and forget it type platform. Depending on your specific needs and the services you offer and the effort you put in to marketing yourself, you can either supplement your income or make it your full-time job.

Creating a Fiverr Account
Setting up an account on Fiverr is relatively easy. There are no signup fees or monthly recurring cost. As a seller, this is a big plus. Although there are no monthly fees or signup costs, Fiverr gets a percentage of each sell. Fiverr collects 20% of each sell, which is used for promotion and advertising.
Once you sign up, you'll have the option to join as a freelancer or buyer, or like in my case- both. If you prefer not to sign up using your personal or business email, you can also use your Facebook, Google or Apple account as an alternative. When choosing a username for your Fiverr account, be sure to be selective as this is a name that will represent you.
Is Fiverr a legitimate site for buyers and sellers alike? Yes, it is. My advice, however, to anyone looking to sign up on Fiver is to be sure that the services you offer are consistent with your talents. You don't want to offer services that you won't be able to deliver. This will also prohibit you from being a successful seller on Fiverr. If you purchasing on Fiverr, be diligent in your search. Overall, Fiverr is a legitimate online marketplace for both sellers and buyers.
