HMU Meaning

So what does HMU stand for? I was pretty amused by the list of definitions given out by the Urban Dictionary. Here are some of them –

1. Hug My Uterus - Yeah, don’t ask!
2. Hot Man Underpants
3. Hot Musty Underarms – Blech!

Anyway, these are NOT the trending phrases on Facebook. The popular HMU slang that many college going students had as part of their status message in the year 2010 is -

“Hit Me Up!”

Before you think way too much, this doesn’t have any hidden perverted meaning to it. That’s right – no innuendos! It just means – “I’m bored! Why don’t you call me up or text me?”.

HMU Slang and Facebook went through various status updates of people from around 230 plus countries. They then compared the popular phrases in the year 2010 to their numbers in 2009. After proper analysis, Facebook came up with a list of popular phrases in which HMU (an acronym for “Hit Me Up”) topped the list. The phrase was hardly even used in the year 2009 but somehow its popularity rose in 2010.

The popularity of “HMU” started early in 2010 with over 80,000 mentions each day. Pretty big, huh? The phrase is mostly used by college students and it was seen that after vacations the popularity of HMU just dipped a little. Mostly due to the fact that they were occupied with school work and had only time to make such “requests” during weekends.
