"Hallelujah" Chords for Piano and Guitar

"Hallelujah" is one of Leonard Cohen's best-loved songs. If you'd like to learn how to play it, you'll find lyrics, sheet music and even backing tracks here.

I love to play Leonard Cohen's songs, and I have taught guitar for many years. This page shows you how to play the chords for "Hallelujah" on the guitar, and I have included a guitar picking pattern, as well.

Guitar and Piano Chords

If you came here to learn that "Alleluia" song from Shrek, you will find chords and backing tracks for "Hallelujah," links for "Bird on the Wire," "Suzanne," and other Leonard Cohen songs.

First, let's hear a little about the master himself.

I first heard Canadian musician and poet Leonard Cohen, the composer and original "Hallelujah" singer, as a child back in the 1960s. Cohen seemed old to me in 1967 although he was only 31 when he released his first record, but his songs were so wonderful!

Cohen's first album in 1967 was my introduction to that gravelly voice and dark poetry. His voice still has a magical personality that fascinates and draws you in. The passion and experience combined with his dark voice make him even more compelling today. I was in British Columbia when he performed in London last year and we all sat glued to the TV screen for his live concert.

Undoubtedly, "Hallelujah" is one of Cohen's greatest songs. This page is a celebration of that great song. The song is such a classic and it is not that hard to play. I want to share the lyrics, chords, backtracks and recorded versions. I would like to show you how you can easily play it on the guitar. Above all, I want to say hallelujah for the talent of Leonard Cohen

If you want to read Cohen's "Hallelujah" lyrics, buy the piano music or buy the guitar TAB, this is the place to be. There are also tips on how to play the chords and these are freely given. You will find vocal sheet music here and if you are looking for an accompaniment track, there is a selection here, too.

Have fun and enjoy the words and music of Leonard Cohen! Why not also take some time to listen to the alternative versions and see what an amazing and versatile song this really is?

Guitar study in Jeff Buckley style

Guitar study in Jeff Buckley style

You could accompany yourself singing "Hallelujah" by playing something quite similar to this fingerstyle guitar piece above. It is basic TAB with simple chords and a few hammers and pulls. Buying the guitar music, of course, would give you something far more accurate than this, or anything you might discover on a TAB site, but I like playing my accompaniment in this style.

I fell in love with fingerstyle guitar in the late 1960s. One of my favorites then was Classical Gas, contemporary also with Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen, Mason Williams and Ralph McTell were my heroes! I spent ages learning to play Classical Gas from the sheet music.

k.d. lang Sang "Hallelujah" at the 2010 Logie Awards in Melbourne

k.d. lang got a standing ovation for her performance of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the Australian TV Logie Awards. The Canadian singer won the audience over with a beautiful rendition of Cohen's song that is enough to give anyone goosebumps! She also reveals that the poem originally had many more verses.

"Hallelujah" Accompaniment Track

"Hallelujah" backing tracks are easy to get! If you are a singer, the chances are you might want an accompaniment track rather than a chord chart. Here are some examples of professional accompaniment tracks I have put together.

  • Leonard Cohen
  • Alexandra Burke
  • Allison Crowe
  • K D Lang
  • Susan Boyle
  • Rufus Wainwright
  • Katherine Jenkins

Lyrics to "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen

Well, that is not how Cohen spells it. Unless you are searching for lyrics to Alleluia the hymn, you probably need these lyrics. This is one of many versions of the song, and it is not complete. If you really listen to it well, you will see that each performance of Hallelujah is different: This is hardly surprising, as Leonard Cohen said he drafted over 80 verses!

Basically, the "Hallelujah" sheet music for sale is an official, fixed version of Cohen's song, I have searched for different versions too, notably Celtic Thunder' Hallelujah and Canadian Tenors Hallelujah but found them hard to track down. Jeff Buckley Hallelujah might be available in a guitar TAB book but I am not certain if it is still in print, since his death.

Now I've heard there was a secret chord

That David played, and it pleased the Lord

But you don't really care for music, do you?

It goes like this

The fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lift

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you

She tied you

To a kitchen chair

She broke your throne, and she cut your hair

And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before

I know this room, I've walked this floor

I used to live alone before I knew you.

I've seen your flag on the marble arch

Love is not a victory march

It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The Master at Work on Hallelujah Lyrics...

Incomparable! Leonard Cohen is the embodiment of his own songs. His dark poetry digs down into the soul of singer and listener alike! Cohen's guitar playing and singing always moved me deeply. Hallelujah for Leonard Cohen!

Hallelujah chords transposed to G for lower voices

Hallelujah chords transposed to G for lower voices

Here are the chords for "Hallelujah" in the Key of G. This is a much better key for the average singer to perform in as it is neither too high nor too low. For those wanting to get it absolutely right I would still say buy Hallelujah sheet music, but for those less happy making their arrangement from a piano score, this will work nicely.

Jeff Buckley Sings "Hallelujah"

Jeff Buckley's version definitely has a tingle factor. Looking for the sheet music for Buckley's "Hallelujah" is a forlorn task though because the copyright belongs to Leonard Cohen. TABs exist for guitar enthusiasts, but if you are looking to buy Buckley's sheet music for this song you will be out of luck. You can still enjoy videos of Buckley singing his wonderful version of Hallelujah though.

Should Lady Gaga cover Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," or would that be just too weird?

Yes! Lady Gaga should definitely sing "Hallelujah."

Susan Zutautas: I'd love to hear how Lady Gaga would sing Hallelujah.

Stephen J Parkin: Why not any great singer can cover any song that appeals to them. I think however that it is an unlikely choice for her to make.

anonymous: go for it

Kapalbility: I do not like Lady Gaga that much, but she is more talented than we think. I saw her cover my favourite Coldplay song, Viva La Vida and she pulled it off. So I am not closing my doors on her on this great song.

Stephanie Tietjen: Yes, It'd be awesome.

printabledolls: why not?

kathysart: Sure if she wants to.

SoniaCarew: It would be weirdly wonderful!

Heather Burns: the more the merrier I always say, but I don't see how anyone can beat Jeff Buckley's version. Funny, but my son and I were just watching his on Youtube the other day. My son is a composer/pianist who accompanies opera singers here in L.A. and knows Placido Domingo...sidetracked....anyway, we love Jeff Buckley's the best.

No. There are so many great versions already.

MeAndMyGuitar LM: Just weird for Lady Gaga ! what a question ! HAHAH. thank you for sharing guitar chords

knitstricken: No no no no no please... no. I appreciate her talent but this song is sacred and she's all about exploiting the pop culture. It's too... blasphemouse for my liking!

Sandy Mertens: Some things Lady Gaga shouldn't do and this is one of them.

Lori Green: 20 minutes after reading the lens and the song is still stuck in my head!

Lori Green: Weird but got to tell you this lens is great. Although I knew the song, thank you Shreck, I didn't know the words.

BestRatedStuff: Pure weird, my initial reaction is a shudder. But, then again she just might pull it off.

Rose Jones: Let the Lady take another one!

Different Versions of "Hallelujah" Sheet Music

Looking to buy Hallelujah piano music?

If you want to buy hallelujah sheet music there is one version currently available. This is the same for all song covers unless special permission is sought to publish a different transcription. Leonard Cohen hallelujah sheet music is the version. If you are looking for Hallelujah sheet music K.D. Lang you are unlikely to find it and will have to work out the differences yourself. Looking for Hallelujah piano sheet music with lyrics? The standard version by Leonard Cohen has the most common version of the lyrics, but there are probably as many versions as there are original verses! You have to listen to the performances you like best and choose the verse appropriate to yourself as k.d. lang has done.

If you want to buy the piano music sheet of Hallelujah in Shrek, that is available here. The Canadian Tenors Hallelujah sheet music is not available as far as I can see. As for free k.d. lang keyboard sheet music - sorry - if you find a site offering it at best you will find they are offering an illegal download, at worst you may well pick up something really nasty on your computer. If you want k.d. lang Hallelujah sheet music free you will have to work it out for yourself. Hopefully a page like this will help you work it out and as far as I know that is not illegal for personal use, but buying the music for Hallelujah helps keep musicians employed in music so they can continue to entertain us with new songs and not have to give it all up to get a day job. As a musician who also HAS a day job, it clips your wings far too much when all you really want to do is write, record and sing.

Leonard Cohen "Hallelujah" Lessons and TABs

Here are some of the best TAB versions of "Hallelujah". These links include a tuition video by a top-ranked guitar tutor plus TAB you can print or download.

For me, much as I love Rufus Wainwright's version, and as much as Jeff Buckley's version gives me chills, Leonard Cohen's original version is still the best. The ultimate dark, poetic lyrics of a genius. Thank you, Leonard Cohen, for recording that first album and introducing a generation to a wonderful sound that went beyond the 1960s folk underground to take the world by storm!

Rose Jones on March 17, 2012:

Thanks so much! My ex-husband father always told us that he was Leonard Cohen's roommate at Harvard - apparently Cohen didn't go to Harvard, so there must be more to the story! Anyway, because he was Canadian and such a wonderful performer and songwriter we listened to a lot of Cohen when I was first married. Gagun (dad in law) is in heaven now, so I'll never be able to get all the details. Angel blessed - for bringing me K.d Lang's version as well as the transposition for other voices you found.

Great lens
