Computer Technology Means Progress
In so many ways computer technology means progress. Don't get me wrong, I love my computer but I wonder some days if modern computers like mine is making life easier?
Computer technology and it's progress is ever advancing and with it comes the updates, equipment that is quickly obsolete, and a few bothersome maintenance tasks.
I sometimes wish for simpler days...
The oldest computer technology is called an Abacus and still in use today in many parts of the Asian Continent. It is a simple structure with rods and beads that is used for calculations. It's construction is simple and there is no need for an update. EVER!
Is modern computer technology complicating our lives?
I sometimes think I should just pull out that old typewriter in the closet, dust it off, and grab a stack of paper! But then where do I post THAT daily blog?
Let us debate whether or not computers HAVE complicated our lives.
The History Of Computers - Great Read!
For computer technology fans -- books on computer technology and it's historical progress are necessary parts of the library. From the inception of the first computers to modern day marvels read the guides below to see what makes them just so very complex!
And Grocery Check Out Lines
There was a day before modern computer technology when a grocery store clerk only had to press buttons on to ring up your purchases. It was a fancy manual calculator. A slip of paper was imprinted with the details of your purchase and your transaction was finalized.
With the modern computer technology, a laser scanner picks up information from a UPC code on a package and relates that to the data bank back to the computerized cash registers found in check out lines today. I have often been detained because I still needed help from an employee to find a price on an item or to make sure the sale price was valid.
Let's add to this issue the problem of a power outage in a grocery store. I have worked in a store and if we had the power go out, NO SALE! We had to wait until the lights came back on to process our customers orders.
Do you think computerized registers complicate our grocery shopping?
Computer Technology And Banking
Drive Up Windows
Drive up windows at a bank used to be a common feature. There are still some banks that offer this service but, more and more, they are being replaced by modern computer technology in the form of ATM machines.
By computerizing our banking systems we are paying for their up graded technology in service fees. SERVICE FEES? What Service? My ATM machine says, "Thank You" to me when the transaction is complete. Is that what they mean by service?
Add to this the complications of losing a debit or a credit card. Have you ever left your bank card in a machine? I have. I have left it there during holiday weekends twice! It took me 10 days to get a replacement card in the mail. There are other ways I could list that banking is more complicated with computers but this is my main disagreement here.
Banking Issues - Drive Up Banking
In the days when drive up banking was common personal service meant your bank knew who you were and welcomed you to their establishment. They also were alert to problems that went on with your account activity. Service fees were based on just that for services rendered.
Do you think banking is more complicated with computers?
Computers are Just Complex!
Using them is complicated!
Computers can just be so very complex. Using them in certain ways gets really complicated if it's outside the stream of normal program applications such as basic word processing or game playing.
From the earliest days of the Commodore 64 and The Vic 20 in our home operating a computer took some study and a lot of time to do basic functions. I found my Vic 20 to be a wonderful chess partner and that was about all it's purpose served.
When the PC upgraded to the units we have today with the Pentium Chips and the massive memory capabilities, there are always problems that arise with software and hardware alike. Hardware wears out and the expensive machines need to be replaced to keep up with the ever growing uses. The software blows out some of it's internal programming or the manufacturers update new programs and patches to keep our PC running well for our use. Downloads can sometimes be harmful and seriously time consuming.
Personal Computers Are Complicated - Using them Can Be Complex
The many updates and other software or hardware issues that comes about in using a computer tends to make using them quite complicated. This also interrupts my project of the moment. Installing these updates can be quite the headache. New programs are released in what seems like a time line of every six months and I question the new programs always for my personal use. It takes a few weeks to get to know the new formats and I like having a stable program that I know I can use quickly. (I still like using old programs like Word Pad and Paint!)
Do you think computers can be too complicated at times?
Computer Technology In Industrial Use
Medicine, Flight, and Space Research
There is a need I have to admit for complex machines in industrial applications to operate things like a jet aircraft or the Space Shuttle.
They are useful in research for science and medicine. Using computers in these fields help scientists and physicians understand more about the tiniest details and they assist in scientific experiments.
With the Hubble Space Telescope we have seen some amazing images. Underwater travel and space travel alike are possible because of very complicated computer systems monitoring engine, climate and altitude changes, life support systems.
Modern Miracles Or Mad Science? - Space Travel and Modern Medicine
With the introduction of smaller, more advanced computers scientists and doctors can explore a wide range of subject matter and answer questions that have troubled man for centuries. See some of the accomplishments of these wise findings in wonderful books.
Computerization As A Whole - Are Computers Making Lives Easier?
On the whole computers have given us some wonderful miracles in the way of space travel and in the field of medicine. With them we have been able to explore the ocean and seen further into space than mankind has ever looked. The microscopes see smaller particles to assist with diagnosing and treating illnesses and disease. In this area, computers need to be complex.
Do you think home computers make our lives easier?
In this debate I hope to have shared some gentle opinions of how I feel about the world's computerization. I thank you for sharing your opinion as well. I have to admit, without a computer, this lens would have been more difficult! lol =) Have a great day!

@delia-delia: My issue is the updates and things that make my Squidoo Dashboard freeze! =( I hate that! =) thanks for sharing your comment!

In some ways computers makes life easier, the fact things can be instant, but maybe not better... I think in general computers have caused many problems, from ID theft, a voyeuristic world, negativity expressed constantly, addictions to certain things, etc. etc. JMO

@randomthings lm: We would have used correct a type and it would have been done with! =)

I like computers, but, in a way, it is more difficult at work because now we can do things 100 times, correcting every little thing. 30 years ago we would do it once, maybe twice and be done. We spend more time going over and over things.
