Why "Grand Theft Auto V" Is the Biggest Disappointment in Video Game History
GTA 5 Review: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Before we start this article, I just want to say that I think the GTA series is absolutely the best series in all of video game history. Growing up with video games in the early '90s, I played pretty much everything—Mario, Sonic, Zelda, and even '80s classics such as Space Invaders and so on. When GTA 3 came out, I was a young boy, and I still remember my awe when I looked at the back of the case and saw the 3D, free-roam possibilities. It was amazing—racing around, listening to music, beating people down, awesome missions, ridiculously great graphics, and the freedom to do anything … it was a revolution in gaming.
For me, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was the pinnacle of gaming. I'm impartial to COD, and I played Final Fantasy 9 for over 100 hours, but my time spent in San Andreas was beyond anything I've ever done. Perhaps I'm looking back through nostalgic glasses, but San Andreas was everything I ever wanted a video game to be. The missions were plentiful, variable, easy, and hard; you could fly and drive everything, and every cop chase was a thrilling moment … it was glorious.
Then I grew up and didn't play GTA 4 much. For me, it lacked the fun that the previous GTAs add (I might as well add that Vice City was incredible, too—everything about it).
GTA 5: A Flop
Let me make another thing clear: I was excited about GTA 5, and I mean really excited. Up until it was released, I'd just play FIFA and the occasional 10 minutes on other games here and there. I was looking forward to getting some good hours in, completing tricky missions, and doing all sorts of maniacal things.
GTA 5 promised so much, and it looked so great. But let's be honest—it's a flop—a complete and utter flop.
The Good
Let’s get the few good points out of the way because that’s all there is. I don’t want to slate the game too much—it’s fun and a hell of a lot better than most other games out there.
- The graphics are great. They truly are, but so are many other games now. It’s a pleasure to watch the water, and looking at the city is amazing, but these things wear off quickly.
- The characters and character-switching are excellent. I really liked the characters, all three of them. The switching is good too, and an enjoyable aspect.
- The cars feel fun to drive. Police chases, along with the cinematic camera, don’t get old. The police are quite hard, yes, but that just adds to the fun and the thrill of the chase.
- Selfies. Yes, that’s right. In one of the most anticipated games of all time, selfies are probably the stand-out highlight, although you can’t save or upload them unless you pay for gold on Xbox Live.
The Bad
So now onto why I think GTA V is a complete flop. There are so many reasons, but I'll stick to the biggest problems here.
- First, the map. Let's be honest. When you look at the city, it's great, and the mountains are fun for a while too, while the desert provides some good alternative scenery. But apart from that, it's complete garbage. So much time and effort seem to have been wasted on the ocean. How many times have I been down there? About three—and two were for missions, I'm sure. It's just boring as hell. There's barely anything to discover and absolutely nothing to do except collect "nuclear waste" (which is just boring). It's a complete waste of time.
- In addition, the map just feels … flat. There's no forest, no snow, very few little hideouts, the tunnels are boring as hell, and even the skydives are just not thrilling at all. It seems like Rockstar wasted a huge amount of time here because, for five years, the map is just lame.
- Secondly—lack of interiors. I mean, what? You can go into very, very few buildings: garages (which all look the same), the strip club (which, unless you're 12, is lame), and AmmuNation (again, all the same). There's no variety, barely any choice, and you just can't do anything except drive past a load of fake houses and buildings. It's garbage.
- Third is the bike handling. In GTA: San Andreas, it was thrilling to ride a bike, especially a BMX, but now it's just awful. They handle worse than cars, and there's a high chance you'll die. R* killed this one.
- The multiplayer is atrociously boring. Even if we forget the infuriating bugs, how much fun are a few deathmatches and robbing stores? It's been done before, and it gets old fast. For me, I don't even like to play with idiotic 12-year-olds, so I'd rather play offline, where there's … well, nothing. I'm not even going to review the multiplayer—I'll just say it's even worse than single-player, and let's leave it at that. I'm sure it's great fun with 12 friends, but what if you're not a nerdy loser who has loads of Xbox friends?
- Car customization? Shallow.
- Gun customization? A flashlight and extended clip.
- Stealth? Non-existent.
- Spontaneous bank robberies? Forget it.
- Annoying iPhone app? Yes … but what if you don't own an iPhone or Android?
The Downright Ugly
The story is the most disappointing thing in GTA V and perhaps in all of gaming history. I thought we were promised an awesome movie-like story, but what do we get?
That's right—ridiculously easy, boring missions. Again, we were told there would be diverse missions, a range of things to do, and stuff we'd never seen before. We get shootouts that are just boring (the auto-aim just kills everyone on the screen), checkpoints, so there's no worry of failure, and driving around for 20 minutes at a time. I mean, one of the missions—yes, 1 of the 67 or so missions—is literally just buying three masks.
And don't get me started on the heists. The trailers promised us the ability to plan heists meticulously, and then …
We get the choice of two options? Two options?! How is that planning?
The heists were undoubtedly the biggest let-down of the game. We barely get any money until the last one, and there's even a "heist" where we fly a helicopter and submarine to pick up a "weapon," only to give it back. It sounds fun, but it's amazing how much it's just awful. 10 minutes of flying there, 10 minutes in a painfully slow submarine, and ten minutes flying back. Yeah, great heist.
And that's why I think GTA V is a complete flop. My opinion? Play the 3D trilogy if you want some real fun. Or don't waste your time and money. Go and do something productive with your time instead.

Oh. And one more thing. Someone said about expectations. That this expectations are for 2020, not the 2013, the game release date. So listen here KID: try to play very first MAFIA on you grangpa's dusty PC and 3:4 monitor (lol). And you'll find plenty of things that GTA still suck at. And then make some research on MAFIA's release date. And it's still a masterpiece. Still and will be.

I thought GTAV will be a step up of GTAIV. In fact only the graphix was improved. Car physics became worse and unrealistic. Bike steering angle looks funny. Bike is no more a dangerous transport, you can ram a truck and you still in saddle. Euphoria is ruined too. In IV you could be pressed by a bike and loose your health, you could step on corpses. Now you can't. Corpses had weight. Now you moving them just walking thru WTF. EXPLOSIONS... oh yeah. This is my favourite. In IV cars was damaging, deforming by explosions, then burned and only then the gas tank exploded. Now all cars made of flammable gas and tyres are made of gunpowder. It was fun to blow cars in traffic jams in IV and watch what is going to be next. Now you blow one and all other cars explode in same time. Also it ruined gameplay so many times, not giving a chance to eject a burning car and get a wasted screen. Fighting. Fighting in V is trash. Aiming trash. Baseballbat animation wtf? All this ugly step-by-step fighting logics makes it irritating. Tires as i already said now made of gunpowder, looks funny and disappointing. Tyre model now disappear faster that is very unrealistic and you can run on naked rim much better than in IV. In IV there was a feeling that you really run on stellie rims on concrete or tarmac, it was difficult. In-air car positioning - bullshit. I do instinctively turn my wheels in propper direction to correct car as soon as i land, but now my car flips because of it in wrong direction WTF. There was a good idea thta you could push cars in previous versions, now in V try to push car of a cliff - impossible. Planes. I played GTASA long time ago, but if my memory is ok - planes had more fun to drive, i remember air battles on hydra - it was awesome. Now its rubbush. Interiors. Why not just transfer all burgershots and cluckinbells from iv to v? Fail. No fastfood shops anymore. But it was fun to make a shootouts in them in IV. Hospitals. Same thing as cafes. No hospitals no fun. We have some interiors on missions, but they are all locked in SP mode, WTF. Why i can use an elevator on a mission to climb a skyscrapper and in SP it doesnt even has a buttons. Fail. And this is things i just pulled out immediately, i can go on further, i doubt the comment size will allow.

I'm just hoping that the next installment isn't as bad this one, the whole point to creating a new game is to look back at the older games and improve on it and this one is just a bit, ehh

Eh I feel you, and anyone else that’s old enough will always feel San Andreas was the place to be.
Tk on May 25, 2019:
Rockstar, please ask companies like bethesda and bioware on the importance of interraction. Swallow your pride, games are inspired from other games. Look at skyrim, fallout, fable, dragon age and even mass effect where one can be anything from a bard to a king, entering, invading, claiming and buying castles and tents. Joining factions and cults, riding dead horses and fighting dragons. The creators of gta 5 knew how to make a gta game without a doubt but they lacked imagination and even worse, had no desire to change the gaming industry like they once did. Oh how the rockstars have fallen...painful game
Majik on May 20, 2019:
So the "biggest setbacks" to you is that there is no snow, there's no forests (even though there are) and the bike handling is bad (which it isn't)? Also wym shallow car and gun customization? They're far more exstensive than just about any other open world game on the market in 2013. It sounds like you just pulled these out of your ass bro.

I agree, the story wasn't very well thought out and everything just seemed rushed. I had more fun playing GTA 4, tbh.
ManOfFireAndLight on February 25, 2019:
No mention of the GTA creator and the community which it has spawned that has maintained interest in the game during the lulls between updates. As creators we have made content that helped keep the game alive, when R* and TTI didn't seem so invested in the IP. We will continue to keep the game alive until GTA6 appears.
If you are having problems finding people to play with on XB, it's because everyone who liked the game bought a PS4 where the community is huge.
Isaac on February 08, 2019:
"a complete and utter flop"
They say about the single most profitable piece of media ever created.
No matter how you felt about it or how disappointed you were, calling this game a flop is objectively incorrect. It has made rockstar over 6 billion dollars since it came out.
Bobby on October 22, 2018:
Yea I thought the story mode would be all about heists and getting rich being a bank robber and avoiding cops and shit not helping the cops. There were only like 2 real heists where u got money and they were pretty boring and the rest of the story is pretty pointless and boring too
GTA on October 19, 2018:
Not the best GTA game.
Heavily cut down physics engine inferior to GTA IV's
*Car physics including inertia, traction, suspension etc. simplified
*Collisions which seem to have a bizarre mass vs mass vector meaning cars not belonging to the player are like bricks
* Pedestrians that only have one global behaviour, which is to try and fight the player for simply standing a meter away
*Poorly executed character switching mechanics during missions where gameplay is constantly interrupted to perform a task resulting in the mission pacing being ruined.
*Generic, short storymode that is basically training for online, the story itself bland with forgettable characters and unclear/absent long term goals/motivations.
*Police in chases have a scripted ability where they tap your car after suddenly gaining 100mph, the pit maneuver itself is also scripted instead of relying on the physics of the sandbox.
*Online is basically a grind trap with Rockstar now focused on shark cards, watch them pull this same thing for Red Dead Redemption 2.

OMG Seriously. This article is absolute rubbish. GTA V is a great game, probably the greatest game ever made. Statistics will tell you that. Who cares what a handful of opinionated bloopers have to say. Yes it could be better sou could every game ever made. People dint make games for individual but rather for groups of people and based of research and focus groups and what is trending. My expectations of video games is so high in what I would like it to be that I would never be satisfied and every game will be rubbish to me. Be realistic and know that everything has its limits. And you CANT say GTA SERIES is the best of all video games and then sat GTA V is a flop, I think you are stuck on GTA SA wich, yes was great but its absolute crap compared to GTA IV and GTA V.
Please dont write articles lik ethis cause it shows just how little you know. You probably still spend hours playing MARIO or SONIC or something, thinking...They dont make games this good anymore. You are sad.
Human Jr on September 22, 2018:
Finally, someone who feels the same way!
I think I felt ultimately disappointed because I let myself get too excited for it. I built the game up in my mind to a point that was impossible to reach.
But there are so many little annoying things, like how quickly you die: you are so afraid to try anything fun because you know you'll immediately be killed, by either a short fall or a few bullets. You can't roll down the big mountain, or even land upside down in a car, it's ridiculous.
The hair and beard options are so weak; there's like four for each character. There are ZERO hat options for Michael, aside from the golf visor attached to that outfit.
80% of the map is an empty field.
GTA V is simply a shallow game. GTA IV is such a pleasure to play because it is small but very concentrated. There are more pedestrians to mess with. (In GTA V there are barely any in a given location, and they're all on a simple walking loop, it seems.) GTA V is an impossible game.

Its simply one massive disappointment. This game had the potential to be the best game ever, let alone GTA. R* spent 5 years on hype and useless landscape development. I mean seriously, fuck your oceans. Here's a list of gripes off the top of my head:
1 Missed opportunities: they took the time to design an amazing array of realistic( looking) cars, yet they never exploited them. What happened to the car collecting staples of previous GTAs? Why doesn't Los Santos Customs need any cars?
We get a massively developed stocks market, but, aside from the Lester missions, pretty much nothing to do with it. Do R* really expect us to sit and follow the market on a cellphone? Is that what GTA came to? why on Earth can't I affect the stocks myself? Because that would have been amazing fun.
The investments are fucking terrible. So you're telling me that Trevor bought an airfield, but he can't just hire a bloody employee to make money like the old GTAs? Ron? Or that other cunt in the strip club? What were R* thinking when they offered the tow truck investment? That someone will tow cars five hundred billion times just to break even? The other investments can't be developed or supported a la GTASA or VC. Terrible shame, those, along with the car collecting missions, were the main meal of the campaign, because they enabled us to create an empire.
Where did the fun go? Is this GTA or Sims 3? Yoga? Walking the dog? Tennis? Paying some fucking coach to bang my wife, then not even giving me the option to kill him? Watching my useless kid play games? Running up and down the beach with some crazy cat lady? GOING TO THE DOCTOR? FUCK YOU R*. Fuck you, fuck you, deep from my heart. Is this what GTA has come to? The mad, over-exaggerated, violent escape-from-reality masterpiece has become a simulation of your average American family life. yeah that's fucking great fun, just wonderful. They should have added some 9 to 5 accounting jobs just for the hell of it at that point, and the fanboys would keep sucking their dicks.
But most of all, it`s the cars and everything related to them. They've gone down the F&F route here: no focus on what is their original and principal selling point. They improved the engine, yet the driving is still terrible. Good luck with the interior POV when you can barely see anything behind or next to you.
Car modifications are fucking awful. Why can't I raise a truck to make on offload monster? Why can't I modify a harmless looking station wagon into the ultimate sleeper? Why are the brakes always terrible?
They gave us the option of buying cars, but not of keeping them. What's the point of buying a hypercar or a gorgeous classic if it'll be gone when I turn my back for half a minute? Why on Earth can't we have on option to make the fucking cars stay when they're parked in front of the house. I would've loved to surround Franklin`s Vinewood mansion with the most beautiful BMWs and Gwagons and Paganis, yet all I get is a two car grimy garage and the stupid white Charger. Fuck the 4(?) car garage halfway through the city.
What about the safehouses? I loved the little appartment CJ had in San Fierro, and the mansion in the hills, and the cozy little house down in .. I forgot what the hillbilly town was called. Wetstone? But better yet, the safehouses, and, more generally, the environment, were much warmer and much more memorable. I mean, Grove Street genuinely felt like home. Compare that to Chamberlain St or whatever it was called where Franklin lives? I couldn't remember which one was my driveway after two hundred tries.
I could go on and on and on and on. GTA V had the opportunity to be the single, unchallenged, best game of all time. Instead, we get a half baked excuse for a GTA game. great stuff.
Dr. Finnegan on June 01, 2018:
The lack of interiors kills the game. Not a single bar, hotal, restaurant, anything to spend the money like a person does. The lack of interaction is boring, you can hang out in a very nice city but barely do anything...

The story was the worst for me. the main antagonist was almost non-existent and in terms of weight, this was more like an action-comedy. the trailer seemed to show you could do a lot more. interestingly, unlike the last 3 games where I would be passive until release day, i was waiting on this sibce announcement. so much hype invested.

Not to mention even if you have good internet, if you live on the east coast such as Ohio you are literally waiting on demands such as just aiming and a lot of times it is so slow opponents names pop up half the time and when you go head to head with someone closer to the GTA 5 server than you, you die. So slow you have to sneak up on people to get kills, they need to add servers but rockstar is the cheapest gaming hub.

Of course Grand Theft Auto 5 was a disappointment. IGN gave it a 10/10 on PS3 and Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One and PC. GTA 5 received too much undeserved praise, when it wasn't that great to begin with.
I agree 100% about what you said regarding the Map, Car and Gun Customization and everything else. Rockstar spent more time hyping up GTA 5 and we got a game that just outright sucked.
Red Reaper on September 30, 2017:
I couldn't explain better myself but the only thing I disagree with here are the characters. Sure, Michael and Trevor are memorable, but Franklin? He lacks SO MUCH development that it felt like he didn't belong in the cast. Almost all the other characters are either forgettable, annoying, boring, assholes, or all of the above! There's SO many laughably forgettable and very unlikable characters.

seriously guys? there might be a couple of missions where you have to drive a lot or just buy masks. But the rest are fun. Like assassinating missions, bond missions, robbing banks or a store, driving a bike in a muddy tunnel and so on. If u think the missions were easy then you probably haven't got gold on it. Get gold on it first then say it's easy. GTA V might not have much interiors but what's the point of going there if it's not related to any missions or anuthing? Just to waste time? By the way buildings like lifeinvader and others are enterable once or so but look how detailed they are!! So guys, GTA V is awesome!!!

You do know that they work on other games then gta, right? They did flop with online but if you are social online and not an a- hole you can get many friends. The heist do let you choose if you want to take an loud and stupid take on the hiest. I even enjoyed the story more then gta4 and the game runs great. The final mission if you choose the "death wish" makes you feel so bad a$$. In San Andreas you could not enter a lot of houses except those that had a mission in or a safe house. I think this game was an improvement to the game series and hopefully in gta 6 we will get everything we want.

GTA 5 is my least favorite, way overrated, and not what I expected for all those years I waited for it to come out. Storyline is complicated and boring. When GTA V came out I enjoyed it a lot and still do.. However I can agree on the interiors point... Rockstar could have put a lot more effort into this.. Also it does not make any sense of why rockstar would have you able to enter food joints like burger shot and what not but you can't enter them in GTA V!! Wtf is this!? And I was expecting more clothe stores than suburban binco and posnboys I wanted newier stores. I think tho that the biggest letdown for me was all the things rockstar promised with this game... Like why would they omit the ability to go to a pet store and buy new accessories for chop?! And where is the savanna from San Andreas... I wanted the gang territory's back assuming because ya know Franklin is grove and well I can't seem to understand why they would not put a mini game or side mission to go n take back grove street with Lamar! I wanted to see the ability to use your phone to listen to music like you see Michael doing in a CUT SCENE!!! Omg this whole omitting stuff is really pissing me off but other than that I think the game is really great and great to look at..

Gta 5 is an overrated/overhyped pice of shit.
The bad story line and the unlikable characters destoryed this game. You just don't feel connected to them. Besides that,
there is no gang wars, no taking over spots. Grove Street and gangs are there , but I wonder why ? It looks great and everything, but that's about it. Other than that, Gta 5 sucks and is a HUGE disappointment.
