Try Not to AWW Challenge: How to Survive the Most Adorable Game on YouTube

Krzysztof is a 10+ year YouTube researcher who spends hours researching, analyzing, and uncovering YouTube trends, challenges, and media.

The Try Not to AWW Challenge

The "Try Not to AWW" Challenge will test your heart and soul by going through 10 different assessments meant to attract happiness and a feeling of aw.

It's based off a popular series of YouTube clips titled "Try Watching Without Laughing or Grinning", but now it's meant to stir your emotions in a new way.

You can track your scores after each image and add it up at the end. There will be a table with a range of scores and descriptions letting you know where you rank.

Of the 10 tests there will be:

  • 4 Videos
  • 6 Images

The scores for each test will range from 0-2 and each point will be allocated based on your reaction to the image or video. The description for each point is stated below:

  • Receive 0 points if it doesn't make you feel anything
  • Receive 1 point if you feel it's kinda cute but nothing special
  • Receive 2 points if it's completely aww worthy

Warning: Most of the images and videos will contain babies and animals. You have been warned!

Test #1: Talking Babies

We begin with a couple of giggling, talking babies.

They have their own personalities and interact well together, but how does it affect the viewer. Does it makes you go "oh that's so cute" or are you indifferent towards the video?

This is just the first test and if it doesn't make you feel anything, then maybe you'll get through the challenge.

Not everyone likes babies so it's okay if you don't feel anything. Expect more images and videos of children to follow though.

Test #2: Sleepy Dog

Are you a dog lover?

Well then this test will challenge your animal loving boundaries to the max. The picture is that of an either drowsy or tired dog in an upward facing position.

It's nothing incredibly special and he or she isn't doing much, but there's just enough furriness and cuteness to tug at the heartstrings.

However is it cute enough to make you gush and go "Aw"?

Test #3: Baby Penguins

Who doesn't love a bunch of penguins with little penguin chicks.

Penguins have been included a lot lately with films such as Happy Feet (2006) and March of the Penguins (2005). They've even been involved as funny characters in the movie franchise Madagascar (2005).

So what makes penguins so lovable and appealing?

It's probably a combination of their cutesy baby-face, round-like appearance along with their waddling movements. Those merging characteristics may be too much for some to handle, but are you strong enough to get through this test?

Test #4: Cute Pokemon

This clip contains a couple of Pokémon characters, which have been popularized by the famous anime and its massive collection of games and merchandise spawned throughout.

Well someone decided to turn the already endearing characters into even sweeter versions of themselves that'll make even non fans go "aw how cute".

At least that's what the creator of this video seemed to be going for, but does this portrayal of Pokémon sway you in any way?

Test #5: Mother and Baby

What sweeter than a happy, smiling baby....well how about the mother (I assume) of the baby holding her child in an engaging, gentle manner while looking at them in awe.

It's painstakingly obvious that they're trying to invoke a happy emotion out of the viewer, but would you take the bait?

This image looks like it's trying to sell you a Gerber baby product, but as far as I know, it's just an innocent photo of presumably a parent and their child—how sweet it is.

Test #6: Sad Bunny

You'd have to be a sadist to hate looking at this picture. It's a darling, little bunny with its ears down almost looking upset at something.

Are you tough enough to handle the power of the bunny that all kids would probably die for. You'd never think this was some garden pest that causes farmers problems would you?

No, because it just looks way too sweet and innocent to seem threatening—unless you work in agriculture of course.

Test #7: Ted the Bear

What made this character sweet to the public eye was the bear's overall appearance and cuddly nature juxtaposed with its over the top, cruel, and gross-out humor in the movie Ted.

The actual bear may have acted raunchy, but it's hard to view Ted as being a disgusting, perverted bear because he's a child's plaything.

So do you view this teddy bear's antics as pleasant or does it make you feel the opposite?

Test #8: Crying Child

Now every cute moment has to involve a laughing baby or a positive emotion.

Sometimes a negative emotion triggers a positive response from the viewer as long as we know they're not in real danger.

A crying baby has the ability to invoke those emotions because we know they're vulnerable but they're also tiny and sweet.

It can make us feel bad knowing the context of their situation but in many instances it might just create those typical "aw poor thing" feelings.

Test #9: Cat Army

Maybe you're more of cat versus dog lover. If that's the case, then I'm sure this pic will make you happy (maybe). It's not just a bunch of cats, it's a bunch of cats being extremely playful with one another.

Animals can be sweet just by themselves but add in a bit of playtime and people tend to go crazy.

Clips of animals being playful with each other or other people (especially kids) draw huge viewing numbers on YouTube.

Test #10: Stephen Curry's Daughter

It was the post conference that made the media and people in general go nuts, but it was well warranted. It's hard to concentrate on what the NBA player, Stephen Curry, is saying when his daughter Riley is stealing the show.

It made an otherwise mundane work related event an adorable spectacle, and his daughter deserves all the praise she received.

She is charming and the father-daughter interaction is adorable to the point where it could make anybody feel happier inside.

Your Results

What do these scores mean?

(0) Indifferent: You are completely heartless and are not swayed by anything remotely sweet or cuddly.

You might be a sociopath without any semblance of emotion or maybe you're just too "macho" or "tomboyish" to be impacted by something so blatant (your loss).

(1-4) Minor Effect: You are mostly a board when it comes to feeling anything but occasionally a clip or image might make you slightly giddy, even if for a second.

The rest of the impacts are similar to a non-score but you aren't a complete dud when it comes to pleasant imagery.

(5-8) Somewhat Affected: The sweet moments are mostly misses, but there are a few more hits than before.

You'll pass on a playground of puppies when walking with friends but alone you might have smiled at them or felt good inside.

(9-12) Moderate Impact: This is the average score among these tests, which mean that you're an emotionally stable person (very normal if not boring) who feels for certain things while showing disinterest towards other typically "cute" things.

It's a fairly even split but there are moments where something you see will enlighten you and give you immense satisfaction.

(13-16) Significant Effect: You gush over things more than the average person and every object might have some cuteness to them even if no one else sees it.

Your over joyful behavior may be grating to others, but you still have control over your emotions.

(17-20) Extreme AWW: Practically everything creates a warm reaction to the point where it can become excessive. People around you could get extremely annoyed by your cutesy reactions.

The reactions themselves could be so strong that they create sadness and tears.

(The last category would be your stereotypical over emotional girlfriend seen regularly on TV and in cinema.)
