Troubleshooting JBL Clip Problems

Max holds a B.S. in mass communications from SIU, an M.A. in communications from U of I, and is pursuing an MBA from Webster University.

Featuring a built-in carabiner clip, the JBL Clip is built for people who are on the move and want a small-but-powerful speaker to pack along with them. The JBL Clip weighs in at half a pound, has a splash-proof rating, Bluetooth connectivity, speakerphone functionality, and a rechargeable speaker. Common problems with the device include power issues, Bluetooth problem, speakerphone issues, and more.

JBL Clip Won't Turn On

  • The device has a battery life of roughly five hours. Try recharging the device in the event you ran the battery completely down to see if that gets the device running again.
  • It may not be the there's anything wrong with the device, but rather there may be something wrong with the charging cable that came with the wireless Bluetooth speaker. Try using a different micro USB cable to see if that charges the device.
  • Alternatively, test the charging cable you're using with other devices to see if it charges those. If the charging cable is working, the JBL Clip's battery may be defective. Check your warranty to see what your options are for replacing the battery.
  • Finally, the JBL Clip isn't waterproof, but rather just splash-proof, which means that it can't handle much more than a light rain, and it most definitely can't be submerged in water. If you think there's a chance that you overexposed your wireless Bluetooth speaker to water, then that may be the reason it's not powering on. Consult the warranty to see what options are available to you.

JBL Clip Won't Charge

  • Again, if you've overexposed the device to water, that may be the issue.
  • Check the charging port along the bottom of the JBL Clip for dirt and debris. Even if there is no dirt and debris, gently swab out the charging area with a Q-Tip to remove anything that may be obstructing the charging cable from charging the device.
  • As previously mentioned in other sections, test the charging cable and replace if necessary. If the charging cable does work, you may be experiencing a defective charging port. Consult the warranty for options around getting that fixed.

JBL Audio Not Clear

  • Check the grate covering the speaker for any dirt or debris that may be affecting the sound. While it's important to remember that the JBL Clip is not waterproof, it is splash-proof, and you can run water over the speaker to clean it off.
  • If you're playing audio from a device that's connected to the JBL Clip via Bluetooth, ensure that the devices are within the defined acceptable range for Bluetooth communication. The JBL Clip has a Bluetooth range of roughly 33 ft.
  • Try playing other audio files to see if the problem is just with one specific audio file, or if there is a problem with every audio file you play through the device.
  • The speaker may be defective and needs to be replaced.

JBL Clip Won't Connect to Bluetooth

  • Large obstacles between the JBL Clip and the device you're attempting to connect to can prevent the two devices from talking to each other, even if they're within the acceptable range. Ensure there are no walls, cabinets, trees, or anything else between the two devices.
  • Ensure that both devices are charged. If either the JBL Clip or the device you're attempting to connect to have a low battery, there's a chance the two devices may not be able to connect with each other.
  • Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on the device you're attempting to connect with your wireless Bluetooth speaker.
  • Make sure the device you're attempting to connect to the JBL Clip is actually trying to connect to the JBL speaker and not another Bluetooth device that's within range.

Speakerphone Not Working

  • If you're having a problem hearing the person you're talking to through the speakerphone, make sure that the volume is turned up on the connected device in addition to the volume on the wireless Bluetooth speaker.
  • If the person you're speaking with is experiencing challenges hearing you, move closer to the JBL Clip. The device can have a hard time picking up your voice if you're much further away than 5 ft.

Take great care to keep the JBL Clip away from large amounts of water. The splash-proof rating that the device has only ensures that it can withstand small amounts of water.
