Largest radio telescope on the planet
The Chinese government seems to be going all out to outdo NASA in the search of extraterrestrials. It has already started structuring the planet’s largest radio telescope. This is, of course, a great achievement for the scientific community. However, there is a catch. In order to build this, over 9000 people of the Luodian and Pingtang counties have been evacuated.

Xinhua, the Chinese news agency states that in order to build the facility named the Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, or FAST, around 2029 families located within a radius of 3 miles around the site have been asked to vacate the area. The enormous structure has a distinctive design and shall soon boast of the largest radio telescope the world has ever seen. At its widest point, it shall have a diameter of 1640 feet. The Chinese government has already shelled out a staggering $184 million dollar for this ambitious project and it is going to get functioning by September 2016.
There is a great hue and cry in China over the displacement. The Chinese government tries to placate them by saying that the depopulation of the region was necessary for the development of an ideal “electromagnetic environment”. Moreover, the government has promised monetary compensation to the affected families: Yuan equivalent of $1800 shall be given to each affected family, which is enough to sustain a family for an entire year. 12000 Yuan or $1800 is the average annual income in China.
While thousands of families from the affected counties mourn the loss of their traditional lands, and although many are condemning the Chinese government for forcefully uprooting people in the name of science, it must be understood that the Chinese government acted for the best. High-frequency radio waves are known to cause cancer in those not protected from them. Secondly, the use of phones and similar technology within 2-3 mile radius affects the strength of these radio waves.
