What is Snag-It?
TechSmith’s Snag-It is one of the easiest software programs that you can use to take screen shots. Whether you are creating an online software tutorial, developing a presentation, taking a picture of email, or clipping an online coupon, Snag-It can do it all.
You can enhance an image using one of the following Snagit features:
- Add arrow and callouts
- Blur out sensitive information that you don’t want to show
- Add annotations and special effects using the Draw Tools
Why Should I Pay for a Screen Capture Tool When I Can Use One For Free?
There’s a free Snipping Tool that comes with Windows, so you might be wondering, why should I buy and use Snag-It when I can just use a free tool?
In a nutshell, Snag-It goes above and beyond what other free tools offer. For example, it offers a large variety of callout boxes, objects, lines and special effects features, including blur effect, faded edge and torn edge. You can also go a step further and select to capture just text from a screen, capture a scrolling screen, or even record a screen.
This video compares and explains the differences between Snag-It and the Snipping Tool:
Snagit vs. Jing
The makers of Snagit also offer a free tool called Jing. You can use Jing for screen captures, but you will find that not all the bells and whistles offered in Snagit are available. It’s a matter of not only preference, but also your budget.
If you try one of the free tools, such as the Windows Snipping Tool, or Jing, and find that you need to do more, than Snagit is the best alternative.
What Can I Use Snag-It For?
If you are creating a hubpage or other type of online article, there will be time that you need to either include a cropped image from a screen, snag and crop part of a non-copyrighted photo, or caption another image that you create yourself. You can do all these things with Snag-It.
You can snag and grab part of your desktop, a region of a screen, an entire window, or even a scrolling window, by using a single hotkey or click of the mouse.
Snagit also allows you to record your scene and take video capture. The latest version of Snagit offers a new video trimming features which was not available in previous versions.
Another new feature is Google Drive Integration which allows you to upload your images and videos to Google Drive and access them from any web browser or mobile device.
Why not save some trees? Instead of printing an email, just take a screen capture of your email message and save it as an image.
Snagit offers a PC as well as a MAC version.
How Do I Use Snag-It?
Once installed, Snagit is available for you to use at anytime through use of a hotkey. Usually this is the PrntScrn key.
On your desktop, you should see a symbol like the one shown in this graphic to the right.
Note: the Snagit icon may vary depending on the version of Snagit you are using. The icons shown in this article are from Snagit version 11.
If you have Snagit open on your desktop, you can click on the capture icon (the red icon), as shown in this graphic to the right.
Next, crosshair symbols display. Using your mouse, drag the border lines around the region you would like to capture, and then release your mouse. It’s that simple.
See below for an example of the crosshairs positioned on a Notepad window. You can either release your mouse while the selected region has the window selected, or move your mouse to select a particular region of the screen to capture.
Once you capture your image, it displays in the Snagit Editor window. Then click File, Save As to save your image as needed.
While the image is in the Snagit Editor window, you can add arrows, other objects and annotations to enhance your image.
Here is a simple screen capture of a window from a program called Audacity which is a sound editor.
After capturing this image, I added highlights, arrows and annotations using Snagit to enhance the image:
How To Add Torn-Edge and other Special Effects to an Image using Snag-It
You can also add edge effects to your image. For example, let’s say you only want to show the buttons at the top, but you want to let the reader know that there is more to the window. In this case, all you would do is crop the image and then add the torn edge effect.
There are also other edge effects including:
- Wave Edge
- Saw Edge
- Sharktooth Edge
- Fade EdgeBevel Edge options
Snagit is also a nifty, easy-to-use photo editor. You can add borders, spotlights, apply color effects and filters and lots more.
In this image, I added a border with a beveled edge, fancy text, and a posterize effect:

In conclusion, the choice of which screen capture program you use really depends on your needs and requirements. As a faithful Snagit user, I would highly recommend Snagit.
In addition to using for screen captures, I also use it in place of Adobe Photoshop for quick image edits, and it’s extremely easy to use.

How Much Does Snag-It Cost?
The current price on Amazon.com for TechSmith Snagit is $54.95.
You can also purchase it directly through the techsmith.com website (same price as amazon).
There are other screen capture tools, some of which are free, but in my experience, nothing compares to Snagit. I have been using Snagit for many, many years (probably close to 15 years!) and it surpasses all other screen capture programs that I've tried.
