How have the Smart phones, changed our lives?

Some two decades earlier, we used to communicate with our relatives and friends, through handwritten letters and enjoyed sending Greeting cards to them.

Still earlier, there were the Telegrams and Trunk calls. Nowadays it‘s difficult to explain these means of communication, to the present day kids.

Then came the Cellphones---.

How quick and easy, it seemed to communicate, after the mobile phones were introduced, in our lives.

It was so exciting to send instant messages, called the SMS to the family and friends, living in another cities. And, you no longer needed to wait for hours, for your trunk calls to materialize.

But there was much more to come----!

How much, more easy, the life has become, with the Smart Phones?

  • In fact many of the Electronic devices, which were bought earlier with much enthusiasm, are of no use today.
  • The Smart Phone has replaced so many of them, and here is a list of the gadgets, which many people have stopped using.
Smartphones: The World at your fingertips

Smartphones: The World at your fingertips

List of the devices, which have become obsolete, due to the Smart Phones:

1. Pocket Calculator:

Remember using pocket calculators, quite long back and even gifting them to relatives, when it first came into being? It was in the late seventies or early eighties.

I was a bit uneasy, when the kids started depending too much upon it, because I thought, that it will affect their mental ability, in the mathematical calculations.

Even prior to the Smart Phones, the calculators were included in the simple cellphones.

2. The bedside digital watches or the alarm clocks:

Alarm clocks were a must in every household, by the bedside. Now, even if the watch may be there, no one sees it. The alarm for the mornings or any other time, is set in the Smart Phones.

Most of the people, do not even wear a wrist watch, and consider them an unnecessary burden.

3. Still cameras/ Digital Camera/ video cameras:

People interested in photography, owned a very high quality camera as well. But it was not enabled, for video photography. People used to buy rolls, click photos and then gave them to the photo studios, to develop them. Such a long process and expensive as well.

Then came the video camera or the Camcorder and the Digital camera. But the Smart Phone has simplified, whether clicking still photograph, or shooting the videos, to a great extent. Anytime, anywhere, we are able to click our favourite shot. In addition, you have the advantage of taking the shot again, if you do not like the picture. You can simply delete the previous one, which you don't like. Then you can do wonders, with your Creative studio options.

Taking pictures, was an expensive and lengthy affair earlier. The Smart Phones are popular tools now, for taking the pictures and the video, for its advanced picture quality, the colour accuracy, it’s zooming options and many other creative options.

4. Walkman:

Walkman or the MP3, were devices which were a must have earlier, when we were travelling in a train, or in case of long drives by the Car. These were also used by people going for the morning or evening walks.

Nowadays listening to the Music, on the Smart Phone is so easy and enjoyable, and you have the option of selecting your personal favourites.

The Smart Phones provide music in surround sound and it has built in active noise cancelling technology.

The big music system, which needed lot of maintenance, and occupied too much space, is a thing of the past now. In addition, you can enjoy music anywhere, even when not at home.

5. Scanners:

With the provision of the Smartphone scanners, you can use it anywhere, and you need not necessarily use the bulky scanners, at your home or offices. Just to give an example, the Smart Phone scanners can be used at the banks and the airports, and even for sending some important documents.

6. Gaming devices:

I am not a big fan of the gaming devices. But the present generation loves it. Earlier, handheld gaming devices or video games parlour were so popular. I used to take my kids to these parlours.

But mobile phones have included games in every phone, even before the Smart Phones were introduced. Now of course, it is almost like a revolution, and we can see many youngsters, busy in these games, over their Smartphones.

7. Maps and GPS:

I absolutely love these, that is the Google maps. Earlier, when I used to go on long drives with my family, we had to carry the road maps and compass. The GPS device in the Smartphones is so helpful and convenient to use, and travelling to long distances by road, is so much fun.

8. Landline phones:

Comfort and convenience of the Smart Phones, has also affected the use of the Landline phones. Though people still own the landline phones, hardly anyone uses it. Since it is fixed at one place, and most of the people prefer devices, which can be used, even when we are on the move.

9. Bank App:

Although lot of precautions are required to use these bank related options. But it is so much convenient to use, anytime, anywhere. You don't have to stand in the long queues, in the bank for transactions, or to pay your utility bills, such as the electricity bills, or phone bills, or credit card bills.

You also get your bank statements on phone, and can avoid going to the banks, to update your bank records.

I personally like the feature of transferring money to someone, or within your own accounts, sitting at home.

I have opted for e-bills for all my utilities. This saves paper, and is a positive step to protect the environment.

Smart Phones save us from all the botheration of withdrawing or depositing money.

10. News anywhere:

Though, I do love reading the Newspaper in the morning. But so many of our relatives live faraway, in different countries. With the help of the Smartphones, it‘s so easy to know, what's happening there instantly, by installing the prominent News related apps.

There is a weather app. and the Time zone app., which tells you instantly, about the present time or weather conditions, of the particular place, where your family or friends are living.

The World has become a small place, and it has become so much easier, to remain connected, with your loved ones, living far away.

To Conclude:

  • Technology is a friend, and it must be utilized judiciously.
  • The Smart Phones, which can rightly be called as a mini Laptop, has changed the way we live, or work, or do banking, or travel, and these are only few of the things, which I have mentioned above.
  • How easy it is, to talk to your close ones, through Skype or FaceTime!
  • How exciting it is, to send your personal pictures, to your friends and family, via WhatsApp, anytime from anywhere globally!
  • There are many other features, which I do not even use. But I have observed the young generation, doing incredible things, on their Smartphone. In fact, it is a mobile office for them.
  • Love it or hate it, the Smart Phones rule our lives today!
