In this article, I’m going to share several SEO-related terms and their meanings with you. So, are you ready to learn some of the most common and uncommon terms with me? If yes, then let’s get started:

#1. Crawling: Almost every search engine, like Google, consists of three main components responsible for rankings. These include a crawler, an index, and an algorithm.

Crawlers are robots, bots, or spiders that travel around the web through links, read the content and save it in the index. And this complete procedure is what called crawling.

#2. Indexing: Indexing is the process that comes after crawling. Crawlers scour the internet through links and then it stores and organize the web pages in search engines.

Indexing refers to the process in which search engines collect and store information about web pages, and return the best and relevant results when searched. The process of indexing depends on search engines, and there’s nothing much you can do to make your web pages or website indexed.

#3. SERPs: Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) are the web pages that display search results as per the query of a user. It is displayed by search engines according to their algorithms and ranking factors.

#4. Algorithm: An algorithm in the SEO context refers to a set of techniques search engines use to determine the quality of a website, the topics it consists of, and how to show up the website in the organic search results or queries.

#5. Website Navigation: Website navigation is the process of navigating from one web page to another on the World Wide Web in search of particular information. The information present on the internet consist of hypermedia or hypertext.

These wrong tactics violate and manipulate the rules and regulations defined by the search engines for ranking. Some of these black hat SEO practices include keyword stuffing, cloaking, or doing spam backlinking.

#7. White hat SEO: White hat SEO is the set of practices that strictly follows and complies with the search engine guidelines and rules for higher rankings. These ethical ways may include publishing quality content with the intent of providing value to the readers or customers.

The better overall experience you will give users, the longer they will stay on your webpage or website. And this will rise up your page’s rankings.

#8. Featured Snippets: Featured snippets are the short description or summary, usually between 40 to 60 words, that appear at the top of Google’s search results page for some search queries.

Most of these queries include direct questions, asking what, when, how, or words like the top, best, etc. The results appear in a special box at the top of the results page. And this is why it is also called as position zero.

#9. Rich Snippets: Rich snippets are the search results Google shows to a user. Unlike normal snippets, rich snippets show more information to a user in the search results page.

Apart from showing the title in blue, URL in green, and a short description, rich snippets also show up additional information such as image, ratings, time duration, etc. Today, they are also called as rich results.

#10. Google My Business (GMB) listing: Google My Business (GMB) is the feature that allows you to place and list your business on Google. It is an online business directory that is great, especially for people who want their business to be found and grow locally.

Using GMB, you can create a detailed business profile, and add details, such as phone number, working hours, directions, website, etc. It is considered as a strong tool for local SEO.

#11. Webmaster: A webmaster in digital marketing is a person who controls and maintains one or more websites. They can be called as website administrators, website publishers, web architects, site authors, or site owners.

#12. Link building: As discussed above, the search engine crawlers travel through links to discover new web pages. They crawl through your pages as well as the links that point to other websites. The links that point to your website from another website are called backlinks.

#13. Cloaking: Cloaking is a black hat SEO practice in which a piece of content displayed to the search engines is different from that of internet users. This process is against the search engine guidelines and is mostly used to gain higher site rankings.

#14. PageRank: PageRank is Google’s iterative system that calculates the relevance of a web page and assigns them numbers from 0-10 as per the content. The higher the number, the better chances it will have to appear in the search results. The patented system was formed in the year 1996 by Larry Page and his peers at Stanford University.

#15. Caffeine: Caffeine was Google’s new web indexing system which was launched in August 2009. The primary aim of this system was to crawl and store information on the internet more efficiently. It had no direct impact on the site rankings. According to Googler Matt Cutts, Caffeine was the primary “re-architecting” of the traditional indexing system.

I'm myself is passionate about SEO and digital marketing, and hence, this article. I agree with you, Ms. Risha. Doing SEO for a blog, YouTube channel, or any other platform is really important to make your content reach the right audience. And, with time, this will lead you to become a trusted brand in the future.

It's my pleasure to educate my audience about the unknown concepts and terms in simple words. And I love explaining technical concepts into simple ones using practical examples and explanations.

Sure, Ms. Richa. Let me put some light on cloaking for you and for my other readers here only.

Suppose you search for the best luxury cars in 2020 on Google. In the search results page, you see a website that you think can show you the information you're looking for. But when you click on it, it takes you to another web page that has shady information about bitcoin, etc.

So, the practice of doing such things to gain better rankings is called cloaking. As it is a black hat SEO, it is against Google's webmaster guidelines.

For more information, you can watch this video below, posted by Google Webmasters YouTube channel.

I hope you've received some more clarification on cloaking. Please do let me know if you have any other queries.

Thank you, Ms. Risha, for leaving such an insightful comment. Stay connected.
