Why is My Computer Slow / Crashing?
I'd just received a new computer for my birthday and one of the first things I did was remove Norton AntiVirus and install my own.
I've always had problems with Norton messing up/destroying my computers, so I was determined to get it out of my computer's registry ASAP.
I had no problems uninstalling the files. Everything was fine until the next day when I restarted my computer.
All of a sudden my computer was dragging and started shutting down for no reason about every five minutes.
It would flash an error warning, shut down, then reboot. Seeing as this was a brand new laptop, I pretty much freaked out!
Luckily after some calm thinking I decided to search for the error on Google. A bunch of stuff came up about it being a registry problem created when uninstalling Norton.
I happened across CCleaner while looking for a solution. This program fixed my computer in less than 5 minutes!
What CCleaner Does
Your computer gets dirty when you delete things, download programs, and generally just use it. When you uninstall a program, for example, there are still relics of files scattered throughout the registry (the brains of your computer). There can be all sorts of problems when something is indexed but no longer exists, for example. In addition, these useless files are taking up all your disk space!
It's recommended that every computer have its OS (operating system ie Windows / Mac OS X) re-installed every six months. However, most people never re-install their OS. This leads to all kinds of problems that can slow down your computer or make it crash.
CCleaner optimizes your computer and allows it to perform the way it should! It's no longer bogged down by garbage files, which frees up hard disk space. To be honest, it can make your computer behave like new again!
- Registry Cleaner - Remove unused / old registry entries
- Web Browsers - Remove temporary files, history, cookies, auto-complete form history
- Windows - Remove recycle bin fragments, recent documents, temporary files
What People are Saying about CCleaner
If your system has slowed to a crawl, don't despair, download CCleaner, a fantastic PC decrapifier and give your machine a quick spring clean. Able to identify and clean stray files, cookies, and other accumulated digital detritus, CCleaner can make a huge difference and best of all, it's a freebie.

CNET: Editors' Rating = 5 stars. "Spectacular."
BBC: "I was in this situation myself recently, with only 120MB spare on my C:drive. After installing and running CCleaner, I was left with 650MB!"
The Washington Post: "Aside from finding and deleting broken items in the Windows Registry, it cleans out bits of Internet Explorer that can compromise your privacy (such as the cache and cookies), deletes chkdsk file fragments, manages restore points, and does an assortment of other tasks."
PCWorld: "CCleaner searches through a number of programs and removes useless files. It's highly configurable, allowing you to select which problems to look for and which items to ignore."

I too tend to uninstall the AV that comes on computers these days. It tends to want to take control and slow things down. I also tend to have CCleaner stored on my jump drive as I use it on many systems.

This is great. I am not as computer savvy as I would like to be. I have a laptop...several years old that I take with me when I don't want my new laptop laying around, etc. Of course, it is slow, I have uninstalled and installed and unintalled several things. I had a problem simular to what you described on my desktop ...I don't know it is working fine at the moment, but will use this if it happens again.
Great information for those of us that need a little extra help.
