Getting behind the idea of recycling.

If the idea of recycling and saving our planet is appealing to you then you may be interested in the idea that we can take the plastic that we have become addicted to and put it to good use instead of filling up another landfill.

There is a process that takes virgin and recycled plastic and makes attractive poly lumber which in turn is used to create durable outdoor furniture or other products that will be subjected to the outdoor elements.

It is the perfect solution for not allowing this plastic to end up in our oceans or landfills, an additional feature is should this outdoor furniture run its course it again can be recycled.

When did the idea of recycling begin?

We may credit the 70’s for starting the recycling process but we would be wrong the idea has been around for thousands of years.

Before we became a mass producing giant that spit out cheap goods to the point where it was more economical to just throw something away and buy new.

We had to be creative…

Things were much harder to come by before the industrial age when humans had no choice but to practice some form of recycling.

That pair of jeans your older brother was wearing was some day going to be yours whether you liked it or not.

For the record I didn’t…

Then things got cheap and we got lazy until one day we realized we had a problem.

So the idea of recycling comes to the forefront again and we can’t do it fast enough.

According to World Bank researchers the world generates at least 3.5 million tons of plastic and other solid waste a day, 10 times the amount a century ago!

“There is no such thing as ‘away’. When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.”
Annie Leonard, Proponent of Sustainability

Recycled does not mean boring!

Whose idea was it to create lumber from plastic?

A Ph.D. student at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., discovered that extruding incompatible blends of polystyrene and polyethylene in just right proportions creates a co-continuous blend of matrix resin reinforced with intertwined fibers.

Did you get all that?

This in-situ composite can have astonishing compressive strength, hence durable recycled products.

Rutgers patented its immiscible polymer-blend extrusion process and tried to commercialize by forming a partnership with a company that later became U.S. Plastic Lumber.

But by the late 1990s, that relationship had ended in litigation. Then a local entrepreneur heard about the process and was intrigued.

The entrepreneur had just sold his previous business, Plaza Plastics Corp., an injection molder of plastic hangers.

See where this is going?

Injection molding, recycled plastic and a new process is born which now creates the modern recycled outdoor furniture we are showcasing here.

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”

The 5 step process of making recycled furniture.

Step one of the process:

First step is when you are finished with that last drop of milk or orange juice your recycle the plastic container.

Which is then transported to your local recycling facility.

At the recycle center all the usable plastic is complied and shipped to a sorting/processing station where the process begins.

Step two of the process:

The plastic is sorted by quality content before being processed into the form it will take which in this case will be durable outdoor furniture.

This entire process is to ensure the end product is of the highest quality.

Step three of the process:

For the recycled outdoor furniture process the very best of the plastic is formed into pellets and the building design process is next.

Step four of the process:

The new plastic pellets are molded and then color injected into poly lumber and ready to be used for a variety of products.

The coloring process at this stage ensures the color will not flake or peel because it is injected in the molding process rather than being sprayed on.

Step five the final step:

The finished recycled plastic is then used to create durable long lasting all weather outdoor furniture that will not chip, fade, mold, mildew or split.

Not only does this process eliminate the plastic from ending up in a landfill it creates attractive and use-able furniture.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Making the recycling choice.

Recycled plastic patio furniture.

The Adirondack chair is a true classic that has been around a long time and has been copied but not replaced.

This classic design has been re-imagined for the modern age and is now offered as poly lumber.

Say what?

The classic Adirondack design made from recycled plastics and not cedar?

How is this possible?

Well thanks to modern technology and science it can easily be accomplished with a modern plastic mold injection process that allows the color to be blended in rather than painted on, which means no peeling off!

The timeless Adirondack design.

Recycled plastic garden furniture.

The garden bench a classic for the ages.

If you are fortunate enough to have a backyard garden area that is full of trees, shrubs and colorful flowers then one item that is almost a must have is the garden bench.

It provides you with a seating area where you can relax with friends or family, or just spend some alone time.

This is where the recycled plastic furniture shines because you can leave it outdoors all year and not have to worry about it rusting.

The classic garden bench

Outdoor patio furniture that will not rust.

So what causes rust to show up in the first place?

Simply put it is the normal electro chemical processes of a metal object returning to their natural unrefined state, at some point don’t we all want to go home?

The rusting process occurs when oxygen, iron and water (air moisture) meet up and throw a party on your nice metal furniture.

This process can be accelerated when iron is subjected to nature's minerals, chemicals and temperature fluctuations, in other words Mother Nature.

So enter poly lumber to save the day, it will not rust, peel, crack or take a day off.

Great article and a very important topic. I think it's great if companies do their part to help the environment too.
