Port address, logical and physical address
Port, Physical and Logical Address
Port Address:
Ø Port address is a feature of a network device that translates TCP or UDP communications made between a host and port on an outside network
Ø It allows a single IP address to be used for many internal hosts.
Ø Port address can automatically modify the IP packets' destination or source host IP and port fields belonging to its internal hosts.
Physical Address:
Ø Frames need to be transmitted to different systems on a network.
Ø Data link layer adds a HEADER to frame.
Ø Header defines the physical address of sender (Source address) and receiver address (Destination address).
Ø Frame is intended for a device outside the network.
Logical Address:
Ø If a packet is going from one network to another, need another addressing system to help distinguish source and destination systems
Ø Network layer adds Header to the data coming from upper layers that among other things include LOGICAL ADDRESS of the sender and receiver.

• Logical Address is IP address which is not fixed and it regularly changes and it depends upon the Network layer.
o It defines the sender and receiver at the network layer and is used to deliver messages across multiple networks.
o The address is independent of the underlying physical networks.
o Since different networks have different addressing format, Physical addresses cannot be used when the networks are interconnected.
o It is a universal addressing system to identify systems uniquely.
• Physical address is called as MAC address which is fixed for every system
o Lowest level address.
o It is used by datalink layer and physical layer to deliver data from one node to another within the same network.
o It is included in the frame by datalink layer.
o The size and format of the physical address depends on the network.(eg: Ethernet uses 48-bit addresses)
• Port address (Service Point Address) is used for each process from client to server and it depends on the transport layer.
o It is not sufficient to transfer data from on e computer to another.
o A label assigned to process known as port address.
