My Interpals Journey
I have been using Interpals like for 3 years, thinking that it could help me boost my language learning about Japanese and so when I started Interpals, I was still 17 years old. I was learning Japanese and have a few people who helped me with the language I was learning. It was really fun because I learned how to speak natural Japanese language though I'm not yet that fluent with Japanese language.
I have made several friends on the website and I speak with them daily and help build a better relationship with other people who are learning English or Filipino language.
However, I noticed that not all the users like to talk with other users and they have to be considerate on who they want to talk to. It's because there are users who makes them feel uncomfortable by sending them unwanted messages and being creepy or telling the female users "you are beautiful" and other stuffs like that and they can be a target of harassment which is why talking with other users is a little harder than it looks. I will tackle this experience a little sooner.
Interpals Is Actually A Good Website However...
While this website says it is user friendly, it has its pros and cons and let's start with the pros first:
Interpals' layout reminiscence that of Friendster's design around the 2000's, especially when people sees your profile, you can see how many people viewed your profile and posted on your wall. You can also change your profile and add html links such as YouTube videos on your wall to show people what stuffs you like. The only difference it has with Friendster is that you can view your private messages.
You can see your messages by clicking the "messages" icon, which is a blue mail icon, which will turn red along with a red "(+1)" indicating someone sent you a message.
There are so many users you can chat from different countries and you can talk to them however you like and the more you make friends with this site, the better you can have a daily conversation with them, may it be on the language you're learning or the language they're learning. It is great fun to speak with native speakers of the language you're trying to learn as long as you build a good relationship with them.
The con of this website however, is more than it has with pros. While you can talk to native speakers of the language you're learning, you may end up chatting with dummy accounts or accounts that are not the person they're claiming to be. It also has users who are looking for relationships so it makes it uncomfortable for the students who are using the site for language learning and like I said a little while ago, you can be a target for harassment as well. Also the site is not well secured but as much as the moderators' effort are appreciated, dummy accounts can still bypass and send links that are inappropriate.
Why I Left Interpals
Interpals has gone a little off with its security and the site doesn't feel safe at all. Encountering a perverted person could leave you traumatized. The reason why I left Interpals is not actually because of that but because I feel unsafe and my email feels like it has been phished though I never opened any spam mails on my messages.
Though you can block people who make you feel uncomfortable, the only thing you can ever do is deactivate if you hate unwanted messages from strangers.
Interpals isn't a good site neither it's bad. It's just that there are users who are more likely fake accounts you encounter and would ask you unwanted questions. It's up to you if you would like to try Interpals for language learning or for making friends with people who speak the language you are learning.
