Computers connected to the internet have IP addresses that are used to identify them. IP or Internet Protocol addresses are a series of numbers that are used to identify a computer. These Internet Protocol or IP addresses have various roles and characteristics.
So, what is my ip? IP addresses serve two main functions, hosting and pinging locations. The IP address is used to point out the network interface and locate the host in a network. The two versions of IP addresses, IPV4 and IPV6, are identified by the number of bits the number can carry.
The IPV4 is a 32-bit number protocol. However, a newer version, IPV6, which uses a 128-bit number protocol, has been widespread since the onset of the 21st century.
The IPV6 resulted because of the fact that nearly all IPV4 addresses have been assigned. So a need for a higher bit address came about.
Types of IP Addresses
As earlier mentioned, there are two types of IP addresses :
- Static IP
- Dynamic IP
Static IP addresses are numbers used as identifiers for your computer when it is connected to the web that never changes. However, dynamic IP addresses are occasionally changed by your internet providers. The change in the IP address does not affect the user's experience while using the internet. Dynamic IP addresses are usually identified when the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is enabled on a computer.
The types of IP addresses can usually be recognized when working in network and server analytics.
Role of IP Addresses
IP addresses act as an address to send packets of information between a host computer and a server. They carry the address of the host and also the server address. IP addresses can be masked using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). They also act as unique identifiers. When two systems contain the same IP address, the network they are found on will kick one out (usually the first connected device) to avoid confusion.
Finally, IP addresses serve as a means to track a computer to a specific user. They act as labels but using various means they can be changed. You can check speed test and IP addresses if you need to find it online.
