How to Stop and Report Facebook Harassment Stalking

The Difference Between Online Harassment and Stalking

Online Harassment can also be known as "Cyber Bullying" and can include a variety of actions but boils down to any conduct which annoys, threatens, intimidates, alarms, or puts a person in fear of their safety.

Stalking is legally defined as "A person who intentionally and repeatedly follows or harasses another person and who makes a credible threat, either expressed or implied, with the intent to place that person in reasonable fear of death or serious bodily harm"

As you can see; Stalking IS Harassment, but Harassment is not always the same as "Stalking". It is important to know the difference before moving forward.

Examples of Facebook Harassment

Facebook Harassment can be preformed by anyone, but it is most likely that you are being harassed by someone you know (however that individual may be using a fake / impostor / bogus account)

Some examples of Facebook Harassment are:

1. Posts on your Facebook Page / "Wall" that are outright mean or say nasty / evil things about you such as "Everyone hates you. Go kill yourself."

2. Continual "abusive" comments on things you post, such as "You look fat", "That dress is ugly", "Why do you post stupid things?"

3. Tagging you in irrelevant photos, such as a picture of a donkey.

4. Posting videos to bully you either directly or indirectly for example, posting a video of you getting beat-up or posting videos of someone else getting beat up and tagging you in it.

5. Using Facebook "Chat" to send mean messages

6. Using Facebook Direct Messages to send negative or mean messages

7. Starting a Facebook Group or Page about you

Examples of Facebook Stalking

Harassment is annoying and against the law, but stalking takes the harassment to a level which needs to be addressed to law enforcement.

1. "Fake Profiles" send you friend requests then turn into mean individuals who post threats or make you fearful. An example of feeling fearful due to a post would be if someone says "It would be funny if your legs got cut off tomorrow"

2. Being tagged in horrible videos or images that clearly demonstrate bodily harm / death.

3. Uploaded photos showing your home, children, parents, vehicle or other images which were not authorized by you for the individuals use; and the images would otherwise be secret. For example, nobody would know you live in a brick house with the address "88 West Maple Street" prior to the upload; now your safety is in danger.

How to Report Fake Accounts to Facebook

If you come across an account that violates the Facebook Terms:

  1. Go to the timeline
  2. Click the and then select Report/Block
  3. Follow the on-screen directions to file a report

Facebook DOES NOT allow accounts that:

  • Pretend to be you or someone else
  • Use your photos
  • List a fake name
  • Don't represent a real person (fake accounts)

Steps to Stopping Harassment: 1 - DEMAND IT TO STOP

It is highly likely that, if someone is absolutely determined to harass you, you are going to have to ultimately involve law enforcement, so you want to take all the proper steps to help law enforcement in the event that the issue does reach that point.

Begin by sending a message or posting a message stating for that individual and/or their friends to immediately cease harassing you. Be sure to get a screenshot or photo of this as evidence. Make sure the DATE is very clear. You can also opt to print the whole page as backup evidence.

How to Stop Harassment: 2 - Save All Evidence

Next you will want to get photos / screenshots of ALL evidence of harassment. You can also print hard-copies of these pages as well.

Be sure to REPORT all of the violations and get photos of each report you make. If the harassment is on your own timeline, you can remove it easily.

If you have been tagged in photos, you can "untag" yourself.

If the harassment is on other pages, you need to report it.

Steps to Stopping Harassment: 3: BLOCK Them

Now that you have the PROOF of the harassment on Facebook as well as your demand for the harasser to stop, it is time to BLOCK them from being able to contact you further.

To block someone:

  1. Click at the top right of any Facebook page.
  2. Click How do I stop someone from bothering me?
  3. Enter the name or email address of the person you want to block and click Block.
  4. If you enetered a name, select the specific person you want to block from the list that appears.

People will not be notified when you block them.

If you can’t find someone using this method, try going to the person’s timeline and selecting Report/Block This Person from the dropdown.

You *should* be able to see a list of everyone you have blocked under your Facebook Account section, but just to be safe, make sure you also get a photo / screenshot of the BLOCK as evidence that you have now done "everything in your power" to stop the harassment.

How to Block Someone Video Tutorial

They Keep Making Fake Accounts!

It is against Facebook policy for a user to create a fake account. If the individual you blocked pops back up with a new identity and starts the harassment all over again, take all of the same steps as you did the first time.

Now that the individual has harassed severely twice, it is time to go to law enforcement.

Facebook and The Police

Facebook cooperates with law enforcement; from lawyers to police. You can check out their full section on Law Enforcement Help here. A member of Law Enforcement who needs to gather information for a case may do so easily here.

Alternately, police may request information from Facebook by sending an email to , sending a fax to +1 650 472-8007 or mailing the following address:

Attention: Facebook Security, Law Enforcement Response Team

1601 Willow Road,

Menlo Park CA 94025

* The officer / detective will need to provide the following:

The name of the issuing authority, badge/ID number of responsible agent, email address from a law-enforcement domain and direct contact phone number

Harassers: Your Fake Account is NOT Sneaky

As soon as the legal system gets involved, tracking down the owner / operator(s) of a fake account is pretty easy! Facebook compiles and saves detailed lists of data that they have used to help solves all kinds of crimes, even murders!

A FAKE Facebook Profile WILL NOT SAVE YOU from getting caught.

Here's just a few pieces of evidence that Facebook will turn over to police:

1. Every log-in; this includes what you logged in from (your laptop, your phone, etc), what browser your using, if you're using a phone the type of phone is easily traceable, your IP addresses and other accounts that have the same IP logins, dates and times of logins, actions taken while logged in

2. Posts made, even deleted ones!

3. All messages

4. Photos

5. Timeline

6. and more.

How to Report Harassment if You DO NOT Have a Facebook Account

You do not have to be a Facebook member to report harassment! You can simply use this link and fill out the form.

The most important thing when it comes to harassment is to not "fuel the fire". Avoid retaliation at all costs; retaliating will make you a "guilty party" and law enforcement may not take you seriously.

If the harassment is making you feel emotional (enraged, depressed, etc), you need to confide in someone you can trust. Consider talking to a school counselor, a family member or someone you absolutely KNOW is not involved in any way. You may want to consider NOT talking to "friends", as it could be possible that a friend may be acting as a double-agent and is actually involved in the harassment.

If you are an adult and you know the harassment is from an ex relationship, coworker, boss, friend, employee, etc, consider using the court system to get a restraining order against them.

I have the same problem.

Yes , I do use facebook, I'm a singer and I need to have one.

This psycho is stalking me since 2011, almost 4 years. He writtes messages to me, to my friends, to my family and everyone who's near me and everyone who's supporting me in my carriere. I guess he/she has mental problems, however... I think the facebook owners should fix this situation , everyone should have no more then ONE profile and LEGAL one.

Have you ever actually tried any of the suggestions in this article? I've been harassed since early 2012 by an idiot who is doing the same to at least two dozen other people. He has made numerous threats, posted obscene material, made unwanted phone calls to Facebook members (making videos of the calls and posting them on YouTube), public personal information for the same people, and is using at least a dozen fake accounts (more all the time).

Reports to Facebook, YouTube, and law enforcement have been ignored. Facebook's "security page" merely refers one to "other resources that may be of help". They do have a reporting page which asks for specific incidents of harassment. I have the guy blocked and so see the ongoing material only secondhand--how can I provide the requested URLs? I had to defend myself against a felony charge after "someone" hacked my computer and Facebook account and used it to post threatening material. There's no space on the form for that.

This person has posted videos and pictures of himself in possession of what appear to be large amount of marijuana. He claims to have a "prescription" but lives in a state that does not have medical marijuana. You'd think law enforcement would want to look at someone who takes his own picture in front of multiple fruit jars full of alleged marijuana, wouldn't you? Nope.

If anyone has had better luck than we have, I'd like to hear about it so I can pass it along. Meanwhile, do consider signing our petition at: . We have 200 signatures. Rather obviously, we are not the only victims out there.

ses1978 on March 03, 2014:

I have had to block several people for various reasons. Not usually a problem. However, go look at the page. The majority of the comments on there seem to be coming from, wait for it, FAKE pages that were set up by people that I, and many others, have blocked because we were tired of being harassed, bullied, abused, threatened, harangued, and intimidated just because we had nothing but positive stories to share about the new law. And the tricky part, we can't block them! They are bullying us by creating these fake pages that cannot be blocked. And they come after us repeatedly no matter what we post. I have autism so that makes it even worse when they target me even if I don't say anything to warrant any response. So what can be done about this? I have tried to report their pages, but Facebook keeps ignoring the reports. I have reported comments and all that does is get them blocked for 12 hours, but then they are right back at it again as soon as the block is lifted. And that is if Facebook does anything about it at all. If it was just me they were targeting, that might be different, not right, just different, but it is EVERYONE that has a differing viewpoint or different experience than they do. Please help.

Oh really. What utter bullshit. I know this individual from my old neighborhood. Haven't seen him in 35 years. He makes fake accounts with my photos. I reported and Facebook did SQUAT. This is why I no longer buy anything on FB.

nataliemac - check out the section of this article titled "Facebook and The Police". Being that there is an open case against your daughter, you should have a case number. You will need this number. You may find it easier to simply hire a lawyer to send a legal demand to Facebook. - Both of these steps are things you can do on your own, but you likely will be very slow to get results, and if you need these results for a case then time is of the essence.

You do not need to have a Facebook account to report a user. See section titled "How to Report Harassment if You DO NOT Have a Facebook Account" and link.

AmandaKlich on June 10, 2013:

Problem with these "how to stop stalker" advice sites is none of them are ever helpful. Unfortunately, Facebook needs to make their site safer for those being stalked. I am being stalked and the stalker keeps "blocking" me so that I cannot go to their profile and have it reported (they are smart) they believe if they keep doing this I'll have no way of reporting them or building a history of their stalking and harassment against them and really, thanks to Facebook's awful safety features, they are right. So, they keep stalking me. If ever they wish to harass me, they simply unblock me (very immature) and then send me nasty harassing messages or even start stalking my closest friends and family in order to further threaten me (very childish) and here I am left with no way of defending myself. I could report them, but what good does that do when I can't even really "prove" it came from their facebook accounts (they have multiple by the way) when they keep blocking ME the victim of their sick game? Truth is that I can't. I can't prove anything or do anythin about this problem. I am to this point where I feel I have to delete my entire facebook account (which I did and made a new one but this person's so sly they found me in no time at all). The issue is that it is a family member pulling this, and so how do you hide from somebody like that? I can set my page to private, she can still message me or stalk me and see my cover photos/profile pic. I should not have to give up using my social network sites because some psycho can't get a grip of themselves and grow up and leave me alone. Why should I have to give up my things when I am the one who is using it maturely and for family stuff and social stuff, why should the stalker who is only using it for abuse win or force me to lose those things? I shouldn't have to. There needs to be better restrictions than this for people like that. Facebook CLAIMS to work with law enforcement but like I said with their "blocking" feature that's pretty impossible to do much of anything, I can't even report this psycho because of their laziness and not wanting to help members. Try to find a way to contact Facebook.... You can't, I haven't found a way yet and I've been searching hardcore for a way to get some help.

We live in a very scary world. Gone are the days when a fight took place in the schoolyard one on one, with the combatants shaking hands afterward. Even though the older generation thinks back and states that the world was safer then, I think not. These things weren't talked about openly, nor reported in the newspapers. However, in retrospect, there was definitely an illusion that everyone could be trusted and that the world wasn't so scary. In regard to current laws, they aren't strict enough. A restraining order is a waste of paper. If someone is intent on getting to someone, nothing will stop them, no paper, no court, no anything.

This is valuable advice you've given. I do have a question though, what is missing from this ' 2.Click the and then select Report/Block' ?

POSH by tori boutique (author) from 1545 Union Lake Road, Commerce, MI, 48382 on March 30, 2013:

Hello Guest user: to answer your questions:

1. Do you currently have access to the facebook account? If so, go to your PROFILE and download a HISTORY log. This will show all of the logins to your account.

2. Change your passwords and privacy questions. Do not answer your privacy questions honestly. For example, if the privacy question is "what street did you grow up on", answer it with "Apple" (or a food you love). This makes it impossible for someone who knows you to "hack" your account.

3. Being that you said "he", I can only assume this is an ex-relationship of some form. If you have legitimate proof that "he" is doing this, get a restraining order against this individual. See my other articles about how to move forward with such.

What can I do if someone has 1) sent me a vicious fb message 2) blocked me, so that I cannot block him or report him 3) unblocked me to send me another vicious message, and continues to repeat this cycle?

I find this extremely aggravating, especially because I cannot block HIM since he has already blocked me. I want to be left alone, but he seems to have found a loophole in the FB system. Is there anyway to prevent further contact?
