How to Install NComputing X550 Card, XD2 Thin Client and vSpace Virtualization Software

Installation and configuration of NComputing x550 card, XD2 thin client and vSpace virtualization software allows multiple users to share resources in one host computer using separate monitors and input hardware.

A typical NComputing configuration features;

  • nComputing X550 card inserted into a free PCI slot in a system unit.
  • an Ethernet cable terminated with RJ45 connectors at either end is plugged into the network port of the X550 card at the rear of the computer and on the Ethernet port of the XD2 thin client device.
  • the thin client then connects to a monitor, keyboard and mouse via the VGA cable and PS/2 or USB ports.

One X550 PCI card supports up to five thin client devices.

The final addition to the setup is the vSpace virtualization software which brings the remote virtual desktop environment to life. When everything is set up and the host computer is powered up, the interconnected monitors will display the virtual Windows.

Requirements for X550 card and VSpace Virtualization Software Installation

In order to set up a desktop virtualization platform, your host computer should meet a minimum of these requirements:

  • A 3.0 GHz or equivalent Dual or Quad processor
  • 6GB RAM for a 64bit system.

The kit should have the following components for every XD2 thin client:

  • A keyboard and mouse
  • A monitor supporting 800x600 resolution and above
  • Up to 10 and 5 meters Category 6 or 5e Ethernet cables respectively

You only need to have one free PCI slot on your host computer in order to install the ncomputing X550 card.

If needed, two cards can be installed in one host computer in order to accommodate up to eleven monitors. In this case, you should have two available PCI slots.

Installation of vSpace Virtualization Software

Make sure the display and other device drivers are fully installed before attempting to install vSpave virtualization software. This will enable optimum graphical resolution.

Next, head over to the NComputing website and download the latest version of the vSpace software, or else, use what came bundled with the NComputing package.

In our example, the vSpace software is installed and configured on a Windows 7 computer.

  • Unzip and run the vSpace Server package or the CD Install version.

  • Click Next to continue
  • In the next two windows, you will be prompted to agree to license agreement
  • Click I Agree and Next in both cases
  • Next, you will be prompted to select the initial resolution installation
  • Stick with the Default and click Next
  • NComputing will specify installation folder in Program Files
  • Click Next
  • The installation of video drivers for the x550 card will start

  • Click the checkbox preceding Always trust software from NComputing Inc and Install
  • Upon completion of installation you will be prompted to fill in your data as shown below

  • Restart the computer to complete configuration of vSpace software

Create and Configure Virtual Desktop Users

Now that the virtualization software is installed, you should be able to access its folder in Program Files, from where you can register your product and effect additional configuration.

  • In order to configure remote desktop users, head over to Computer Management tool
  • To do this, type lusrmgr.msc in the Search box, or right-click My Computer and tap Manage.
  • Click Local Users and Groups in case of the latter
  • Double-click the Users folder in the right pane

  • From the Action menu item, click New User, or right click and click New User in the space inside the User folder in the right pane
  • Create up to five or six users depending (Six users should suffice in a classroom environment)
  • Create passwords for the new users and configure whether these can be changed or not

  • Thereafter, head over to the Groups folder where you will access Remote Desktop Users

  • Remote Desktop users are granted special permission to log into their account remotely
  • Which means the users you created earlier need to be granted this permission
  • To do this,click Add in the next dialog box and enter the users you created earlier

  • Of not here here is that the Add feature will only recognize users already in the Local Users and Groups database
  • After you have entered all the six users, you should see something similar to the image below

Product Registration

Registration of the NComputing product is the last step before it can be used beyond the its limitations.

The initial configuration will give you only 30 days of use, and sessions limited to only 60 minutes. That is until the product is registered. Upon registration, these limitations will be lifted.

You can run NComputing registration both online and offline. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet for the online registration process.

For offline registration to take place though, you need to have emailed your registration data and XSeries card details to registration@ncomputing.com. NComputing team will send you a registration license file which you link to while registering your product in the offline mode.

  • Start by clicking the Start button and All Programs arrow to complete online registration
  • Scroll to NComputing vSpace folder
  • Look for and click vSpace registration

  • Click Next to initiate the registration process
  • Click Register vSpace server software
  • The data you entered earlier on will be displayed and you will need to edit the info as required
  • Click Next three times and the activation process will initiate and complete

Troubleshooting Windows Logon Error - 'There are too many users logged in'

A number of errors may pop up even after you have installed and configured the NComputing product correctly.

One issue, in particular, is related to Windows Logon error.

The error reports thus: There are too many users logged in.

This will happen if you run Windows 7 SP1 or have installed multiple updates in the original copy of Windows 7.

To fix this problem, search for and uninstall these two Windows updates:

  • KB 3003743
  • KB 2984972

After the two uninstallations and restarts, the thin client users will log into their accounts without much fuss.

Also important is that installation of x550 card is only possible Windows 7 and below. Windows 8 versions are not supported.
